The American Bar at The Stafford London is an institution in its own right where every available wall and surface is crammed with an intriguing collection of artefacts, knick-knacks and signed celebrity photographs donated by patrons and guests over the years.

Overseen by head barman Benoit Provost, The American Bar is open daily from 8am until midnight. Join us for a light breakfast, enjoy an al fresco lunch in the private cobbled courtyard, or the soak up the history and enjoy a signature cocktail.

In accordance with the Weights and Measures Act of 1985, the measure for the sale of Gin, Vodka and Whisk(e)y in these premises is 50ml and multiples thereof. Champagne and sparkling wines are sold by the glass measured at 125ml. Wines are sold by the glass measured at 175ml. Port and Sherry are sold by the glass measured at 75ml. All vintages were correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change depending on availability. Please note that while we serve 175ml of wine and 50ml of liqueur and spirits as standard measure, smaller serves (125ml of wine and 25ml of spirit) are available upon request. They sat 7 people at 2 small tables for lunch. Wouldn’t move a chair over for us when restaurant was empty and made one of us sit on poof. Wasn’t comfortable. Too bad because food was good.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Visited Saturday lunchtime having reserved a table for 2 for lunch prior to a theatre matinee visit. I had traditional fish, chips and mushy peas washed down with a bottle of Aspall organic cider and my wife had an American bar club sandwich and fries accompanied by a QM cocktail. My battered haddock was perfectly cooked within the beautifully crisp and tasty batter. The chunky thrice fried chips were delicious. The mushy peas were a glorious compliment to the fish and the homemade tartare sauce was a triumph. My wife’s club sandwich was prepared with grilled sourdough and contained a succulent chicken breast which was perfectly grilled and complimented by crispy pancetta and grilled baby gem, vine tomato and Burford Brown egg. A good sized portion of thin fries accompanied the sandwich and a good selection of condiments. The American Bar was quiet when we arrived (our reservation was made for 12 noon) but did become busier during the time we were there with patrons mostly choosing to dine there rather than just enjoy a drink. The location of the hotel in the heart of upmarket St James May put off some people but the American Bar delivers a superb mix of classic British hospitality, great food in an eclectic setting and is just minutes walk from Piccadilly shops and the West End. I would highly recommend the American Bar for a pleasant bar lunch in central London.
