Acme Food & Beverage Co.
A trip to Chapel Hill would not be complete without a meal at Acme, but I suspect they've got a devoted local clientele also. The setting and mood is casual and unpretentious, the mood is energized without be frenetic and the menu is creative yet homey. Everything is fresh- fresh- fresh- even in the dead of winter, and lots of options for vegetarians that meat-lovers will find themselves sneaking tastes of too (those brussel sprouts, that cauliflower!)
ACME always lives up to it's motto: "Damn Good Food".
Food was excellent. Best breakfast that my wife and I have had in a long time. Will definitely go back.
I reserved a table for 2 (late Valentine’s Day dinner) and we were put in the back room. This room is by far the least appealing spot in the restaurant. I would think when a table is reserved you get a decent spot. We’ve been coming to Acme for years and almost always get the fried chicken and salmon entrees. My chicken was small and very poor quality. My husband’s salmon was ridiculously salty. Not at all the experience we are used to having there. Plus we got there at 6:30 and didn’t get our food until 7:30. That’s also never happened. Not sure how I feel about returning anytime soon. A very unfortunate experience.
It was all good. And we had a nice time
Very spirited volume level, a little close-quarters with other guests. Excellent food, appropriately-attentive staff, a bit more expensive than commensurate restaurants. More vegetarian options needed!
Valentine’s Day. Great food. Wonderful service. Very good parking.
We always have a great experience at Acme and this time was no exception.
I was entertaining business guests ahead of the UNC game and I am so thankful I chose Acme Food & Beverage Co. for our pre-game meal. The service was excellent, the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was ideal for our group of 6. Will definitely be coming back!
We were seated promptly. Unfortunately, a party with a baby was soon seated next to us. The seating arrangement was not to the mother’s liking, so the server rearranged the seating. The baby’s seat was latched to the table. This put the baby right next to us instead of the other end of the party’s table. I love babies — but he was initially quite fussy, making conversation difficult. After a few minutes, the mother removed him from his seat and he quieted down. Until then I was about to ask that we be seated elsewhere. I was disappointed that the server had not taken our conversation needs into consideration when accommodating the mother’s request. You expect to put up with child commotion in a family restaurant, but not a restaurant like Acme. That was part of the point of choosing to go to Acme.
Also, the eggs benedict was not warm.
I thought the food was wonderful. The service was a little spotty, but overall okay. I will return and give the service a second chance. Maybe it was just an off day.
Had a very good time with my girlfriend until about 3/4 of the time we were there. Then a large group showed up and stood around the tables nearby making quite a bit of noise. I believe they were waiting for their space to vacate, but by being so loud they were very disrespectful of the people that were already there trying to enjoy a nice dinner, and they were in the way of the waitress too. She asked them politely to move or sit, so she could reach the other tables (including ours), but they did not. This is not totally Acme's fault, but the situation got to the point where we felt we had to leave immediately.
Slow service and ok food
This was a disappointing meal and experience, unlike our other meals at Acme. We had to go inquire at the desk about where our server was because we sat at our table while other patrons arrived and their orders were taken. When she finally did arrive (having been summoned), she casually announced that the wall in front of our table always made it hard for her to see if anyone was sitting there. (Our heads were taller than that wall.) Our reservation was for 6:30 and the kitchen was already out of plain cornbread, a staple that most tables order. Our waitress told us they had a different kind of cornbread (with bacon, etc.) which we ordered. When she came back with our wine, she was blasé about the fact that they were out of all the cornbread. Our food was mediocre (once again, not typical of our past experiences there) - fries were only warm and over salted, pulled pork was so so. Bottom line, Acme will no longer be a reliable “go to” spot for us. Sad to say.
Great service from being seated to our server and bartender. Food was wonderful. We all had something different and we all liked what we had and plenty. The noise level a little different. We were outside and before her food came a little girl was running around being noisy and running into servers. Also, we were outside so evidently smoking ok out there and I’m from Montana and our nice restaurants are no smoking, period. Took away from the otherwise lovely ambience. When we are back that way we’d definitely go again.
Food was decent. Atmosphere was lively. We sat at the bar and the attention to taking our next round of drinks/dinner, and getting the food in a reasonable timeframe was pretty poor.
The food wasn't good at brunch. The special angel biscuits were extremely dry & tasteless. The grits were a soupy mess with little texture & taste. When mentioned about the bad grits, there was no reaction from the staff
The food was great and the service was even better. Nice local restaurant that has withstood the test of time.
A trip to Chapel Hill/Carrboro is not complete without a visit to Acme Food & Beverage. The restaurant never disappoints - the food is always bursting with flavor and the service is excellent. On a recent visit, one of us had the excellent short rib entrée and the other had the exquisite mahi-mahi with ginger sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts. Delicious! Our server, Eric, had excellent suggestions and took care of us perfectly. Thank you, Acme!
Waiter did not ask if we wanted refill on drinks or refill water carafe on table. Appetizer took very long to come out. Coconut cake was dry and did not taste like coconut at all.
Acme was my birthday dinner request. We had been here for brunch but not dinner. We were in for a treat. The service was excellent (thank you Tristen) and the food was delicious. The bacon rosemary cornbread is a must. My husband got a wedge salad that was huge and delicious. My entree was the gumbo. I highly recommend it. His was the forever pork, also delicious. Somehow we squeezed dessert in. His key lime tart was one to not miss. Even the Counter Culture coffee was spot on. We will be back.
My special bourbon cocktail was so sour I couldn't drink it to start. Our waiter was so into dashing in and out he didn't bother to querry why I ordered a glass of red wine instead. He just cleared my glass. Having a mouth full I couldn't call after him. I ordered 2 small plates a
gnocchi and duck confit dish. The gnocchi was soo dense if you needed a knife to cut through it. The confit duck which is suppose to be moist (preserved in it's on fat) was tough even hard. Covered in a glop of a white sauce. The
brussel sprout dish was primarily leaves not the entire sprout and extremely oily.
A $28 steak that was mostly fat and grizzle...so, NO.
Consistently good - a great local gem. Menu is always full of surprises.
Terrific food, variations on Southern food but much more interestingly composed. Excellent oysters on the half shell (Shooting Point), duck breast, short ribs, grouper. Excellent starters of calamari and of wedge salad. Attentive service. We hadn't been there in a long time, but we will be back. A lovely dining experience.
It was a wonderful evening with friends. Everyone loved the drinks and thought the cornbread with pimento cheese was delicious. The oysters were very disappointing but everything else was great so overall a great experience.
Really good food and attentive service. We always have a great experience at Acme
Food was really good. Acme is a very cramped space though and my group was seated in the center of the main dining area and we were bumped into constantly. Our server walked by our table multiple times without checking in or removing empty plates. But the food was really good!
Some food was awesome. Some was just ok. Overall it seemed over priced for what we had though.
Food is always incredible, especially Sunday brunch. Try the grits, you won't be disappointed.
Fantastic food, a bit pricey but delicious. Would recommend and would return.
Great food. Great service. A bit of a tight space. One of our favs in the area.
I've dined at ACME several times before and I have never been disappointed. The food & Service has always been great. I will definitely be returning.
We go to Acme a lot and it is consistently excellent. Tried something new for me - lobster pot pie - and it was great. Not huge but plenty of food and delicious. Big hunks of lobster and a delicious broth. Not at all the pastey, flour based sauce you get with a lot of lobster dishes. I recommend it!
Great meal as always! Hosted visitors from Nashville, great service and conversations at the bar before our meal as well!
Food was very good, as was the service. Very enjoyable meal.
Loved the wide selection and inventive twists on familiar dishes. Our orders ranged from seafood, lamb to gumbo and all the dishes were tasty and would be ordered again. Just wish we had room to try some of the sides and desserts. Will be back!
Wonderful, as always...
As always consistently good, busy , hectic. Would like to see more specials and maybe as expansion of the menu a bit.
We have been here many times and it has always been excellent, but this time the service was very poor and food not as good as usual.
Out of town guests from Europe loved the food and ambience.
