Acme Food & Beverage Co.
Acme never disappoints! Our waiter was delightful and such a pro (thank you for the yummy complimentary cornbread); the soft-shell crab was amazing; and our son ate the biggest, juiciest ribeye steak I've ever seen. Acme is our go-to local venue for great food in a comfy atmosphere. Thank you!
Acme is a local favorite. We eat here probably at least once a month, either brunch or dinner. The food is great 99% of the time. They usually have some type of fish hoppin' john style with collards, black eye peas, and or peanuts which is awesome. There's usually also some fried green tomato appetizer. Oysters are good when they offer them in season. Brunch faves are salmon hand pie and pork loin benedict. They usually have a craft mimosa for brunch. The only place where I think they go awry food-wise is the brunch appetizers, which tend to be overly heavy not-so-tasty pastries/rolls. Unless the cornbread is on the brunch appetizer menu, I would skip the others. Service can be REALLY slow, unfortunately. They tend to give you the menu, return after a very long while to take drink orders, and then leave again for a very long while before taking the food orders. It can get frustrating, reserve for a time earlier than you actually will be hungry! The other downside of this restaurant is the inside noise level, for some reason the acoustics are quite bad if you're hard of hearing. If it's warm weather and you have someone hard of hearing, maybe get an outside table.
As always, the food was excellent. The hostess(?) Reagan was very welcoming and helpful. She is a good addition.
Had friends in from out of town who are foodies. Everyone at our table of 6 loved everything we tasted and were thrilled to find rare wine. Reagan rocked! Her passion about food in general and her knowledge and about wines and food made our experience exceptional.
Justin was amazing! He was professional and very attentive to our table. We will be back and request him as our server. The food was well prepared and delicious!
We have eaten here and enjoyed many times and so this was a big disappointment. Aside from excellent corn bread the rest of the meal was poor. Supposed heirloom tomatoes were not ripe and drowned in pesto sauce and $15 (not mentioned). Fried chicken were like chicken fingers. Pork special was overcooked and dry with soggy potatoes. Service was competent but lacked warmth from the moment we arrived. Off our list.
Super yummy! The waitress also offered up great tips and suggestions for our orders that were greatly appreciated!
Service excellent, food was well crafted. Has a relaxed but nice atmosphere. I would ask them to back off the salt a bit, a not uncommon problem with Southern food.
Maybe I was having an off night, but food didn't seem as good as usual. The bartender was definitely more interested in the young lady at the end of the bar than customers, which may be understandable, but annoying.
Went here last night for the first time for my birthday. I had heard about it for a couple years and finally made the trip out there.
First impression was very disappointing. It was cramped, loud, and very dated. We ordered the cornbread appetizer, which took way longer than it should have to come out and it was only okay, no one was fighting over the last piece or anything. They were out of my favorite liqueur, so I settled for a recommendation and tasted very watered down and couldn't taste any alcohol in it.
The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. The food is quite expensive for such shoddy decor. I would expect to eat a $30 meal at least off a wooden table, not the same tables a fast food restaurant has. Everyone was so cramped in there I don't see how it isn't a fire hazard. Don't go if you are claustrophobic.
Now, the food was great. My husband and I both had the BBQ, which was different than we'd ever had, but good. The way it was cut left a lot of fat on each bite, so I had to kind of pick around it, but it had good flavor. Mac and cheese was excellent, as we are mac and cheese connoisseurs. It was actually macaroni, instead of most places having some random type of pasta and just calling it macaroni. It was very creamy and cheesy with almost a smokey flavor to it. My sister had the fried chicken which we expected to be on the bone, but it was more like tenders, but it was still very juicy and tasty. Great beans and mashed potatoes.
Service was a little slow and we kept wandering where our server went a few times. Didn't seem like the type of place to even ask about doing something for a birthday.
Overall it was very good food, but not worth the price for the atmosphere as it took away from the overall experience.
Did not live up to the hype - food was disappointing, didn't like flavor. It was very noisy - don't understand why they didn't use the outdoor garden seating on a Saturday night. Parking was difficult. Overall not worth the price at all.
We went on Saturday, Sept 1. As usual, the food was very good. Our experience on this particular visit was ruined by an adjacent table of four loud drunks. We could not have a conversation. They were so bad that, when they finally left (after lingering over coffee and dessert for more than an hour) the diners at another adjacent table applauded. Once they were gone, the noise level dropped precipitously and we could have a conversation (although our meal was mostly over).
We don't expect Acme to be especially quiet given the layout, but sometimes it is clear that one table or group is getting out of hand. I realize it would be awkward for the server to say something since they rely on tipping. Perhaps a manager, upon noticing something like this, could drop by to put in a kind word to let a group like this know that their conversation is taking over an entire section of the restaurant.
The food is made with love and care of local ingredients. The staff is friendly with excellent service. Great wine reccomendations with any entree. My favorite restaurant.
Great food. Excellent service. Tomato plate highly recommended
Refusal to provide separate checks is unacceptable.
Menu is inventive, food was delicious, service was excellent.
Thank you SO much for taking a birthday celebration above and beyond all expectations! The food, service, friendship, ambience were as perfect as ever
Great menu and service was excellent!!
I made the reservation to be with my son & granddaughter & we had a very enjoyable time. We have
been there before with my son's wife who was at book club that night. Justin was a very good server & gave us good advice on what to order.
Delicious food in a cosy, friendly, neighborhood restaurant.
We just happened to be there on “Calabash Night” & we both ordered just that. Every bite on this great assortment of fresh seafood was absolutely delicious. It was our first time to this restaurant but won’t be our last. Our waiter was awesome & his recommendations for wine was perfect. Loved the interior & outdoor garden area too. I highly recommend this restaurant for dinner to everyone!
We had a lovely Sunday brunch at Acme! Service is top-notch, and the outdoor seating is lovely. Even on a hot day, the sail shades and fans keep it feeling balmy. Food was very good - the hot donuts and French toast bake were especially noteworthy. The BLT omelette was good but not great - it needed a little more pesto for flavor, and the downside of using fresh heirloom tomatoes (which were delicious) is that it makes for a watery, soupy dish. The diner potatoes that accompanied the omelette more than made up for it though! Overall, however, it was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone.
We've been going to Acme for 5+ years, but this was my least favorite experience. I used to recommend this restaurant to all of my friends for date night or to take relatives to when they were visiting Chapel Hill. The menu items did not live up to the caliber that we've been accustomed to experiencing. I ordered the short rib and it was a small piece of meat on top of mashed vegetables that had no flavor. The gumbo was lacking actual seafood. The best dish ordered was the salmon and I will say that it was a big portion with great flavor, so I would recommend that. I was just disappointed in a place that I've grown to love. :(
Great dinner, good drinks
Loved the Rosemary Street cocktail! The heirloom tomato special appetizer was delicious...fresh perfect summer treat...along with deviled eggs which were great. For our entrees we tried risotto, snapper, and salmon...all very good. The dessert list was tempting but, we chose the Chocolate for Charity...the chocolate was tasty and after such a wonderful meal we were grateful for the opportunity to share with others.
The food was great with good variety. The appetizers were fantastic, items you don’t normally see. Outstanding dinner.
Acme is excellent. Love the food, service and atmosphere
Excellent drinks, prompt friendly service and tremendous food- always a treat
Beautiful garden dining in the back of the restaurant adds to the ambiance of this spot. We love the local farm produce and the interesting menu. Great place to go for very nice summer dining!
Food never disappoints. Great wait staff. Tasty specials.
Very good food! Went there last year after Beach trip with brother and sister in law who live in MD. They loved it so much came back this year after Beach trip and are making plans to do son’s birthday party with whole family on return trip next year!!
We had a terrific meal at Acme on a recent weekday evening. Our server, Eric, was knowledgeable, friendly and prompt and made several excellent recommendations. Our food was outstanding: one of us had the blackened salmon and the other one had the file gumbo. We tried a new appetizer - almond-crusted fried shrimp served on a bed of incredibly flavorful, unusual slaw. We finished off the dinner with a peach cobbler with blackberry ice cream. This restaurant uses ingredients from local farmers and the food is exquisitely prepared. We will be back!
Acme is consistently excellent! Love the seasonality of the menu, emphasis on local suppliers, and creative dishes. Tomato pie to die for!
Since we go there quite often, we try not to sit in a two top that would get bumped often by the wait staff. Asked for a different table and the hostess seemed very put out to change our seats. Waited for 15 minutes before asking a bus boy to send over a waiter for waters and coffees. Not a real fan of “hey guys” when being addressed. Food was very good, but again no follow up service on water or coffee until we asked. Prices are fairly high for the area, service could be much better.
Everything was great! Food was fresh and flavorful with adequate portion size.
I have really enjoyed the place in the past, but I found it difficult to navigate now that I’m gluten-free. Not many options and hard to switch items out.
Our server the evening we were there was outstanding. There were six of us and we're not the easiest group. But she handled the situation with patience and competence. I think she's one of the best servers I've ever had, and I've been around :)
Wonderful food, impeccable service, great time! Thanks, Kevin and Justin! Oh, and the wooden serving vessels are exquisite ;-)!
Acme never disappoints! Food is innovative Southern food at its best! Unpretentious neighborhood restaurant is a real treasure with a loyal following (and for good reason!)
Lovely dinner - great food and drinks. Tomato season is the best!
