1833 is the best restaurant in Oberlin, OH. I have eaten there several times, whenever visiting my daughter. It is dependable. The setting is casual. The food is tasty, service is generally good. The menu has numerous options, including vegetarian and vegan.
Recommend, fun place with really good food, excellent service!
We were there for the Easter brunch buffet. Both food selection and quality were excellent. The staff did a superior job keeping the serving stations well-stocked, clean, and neat.
The only suggestion I have for the 1833 staff to keep the hot foods a bit hotter. We felt some of the selections should have been served hotter than they were.
Other than that, everything was great. A wonderful selection of breakfast and lunch items, salad station, and superior dessert selections.
9 members of my family attended Easter brunch: the food was delicious, seating comfortable, lovely jazz music playing at a moderate level so we could actually talk -- overall a wonderful dining experience!
Hidden gem in Lorain county! Visiting family and happened upon 1833, lookin forward to our next visit!
Terrific simple salad and walleye. Deviled eggs were too salty but everything else was great - my daughter loved her steak.
A beautiful, modern space on the first floor of a new hotel. It’s a pleasant environment and the food was excellent. For dinner we had chicken paprikash and Mac & Cheese. Both were excellent.
For breakfast - French toast and the best pancakes I’ve ever had!
had a perfect dinner with my wife. everything we had was delicious
it was very nice food was great
I have to be honest. I was not impressed. The food was good but overpriced. Started with the simple salad. Just spring mix on a plate. That simple... $5. For the entrée I had chicken paprikosh. It was good. For dessert I had the bread pudding. It was just average. Not much flavor. My husband had the simple salad, Pork tenderloin and the chocolate dessert. He loved his pork but again overpriced for what he got. Probably won't go back.
Was not what we expected, We had seen the chef on the local news making his fish recipe & thought we would try it. We thought the food was too spicy. Not very many choices on the menu. We made reservation & where we were seated there was a long bench on one side with 6 tables & chairs on the other side, very crowded & not awhat I was expecting, would have rather had a table to ourselves so we could talk. Very Noisy.
The food was amazing! I would recommend anyone trying this hidden gem! Staff was very pleasant.
The Valentine's Day specials were excellent! We had a great time as usual. Service and wait staff was outstanding.
Delicious, well-prepared food. The Manhattan was also very nice. I had the Pork Schnitzel with spatzle and brussell sprouts. Everything was prepared nicely and tasted great. They had a special lemon tart for dessert that was also excellent. I'll be back.
I always take my daughter and her friends out to dinner here when I visit. It’s fantastic food at an affordable price, and the hotel is also lovely.
Really great staff. Very attentive.
The 1833 burger at dinner was a great value. The Mac n' cheese was well executed. Mushroom toast well done and unique.
The menu had options for everyone. You had us at the brussel sprouts ... everything we ordered had amazing flavor! Portions were plentiful and price point perfect. Our server Lyn was personable and very informed on the menu. Overall service & atmosphere rated well over 5+ stars!
In town for a family event and did a quiet dinner for my husband and I at 1833. Loved everything about the place
My daughter and I came to look around at Oberlin where I went to college. We both loved the ambiance at 1833. Our food was simple bar food prepared for one vegan and one vegetarian. It was quite good.
Booked our Thanksgiving dinner for just my wife and I this year. The food was amazing!! Each selection had it's own individual taste and each dish complimented the next. The service was outstanding!! I would definitely dine here again.
We love 1833 have been there many times although on this visit, there was a private event which really affected food quality in the restaurant.
Another area of opportunity is the noise level, it’s extremely loud when it gets full and very cold inside . We will definitely come back although our disappointment overall was frustrating
The go to place in oberlin. Quality well conceived and prepared food in a very comfortable and pleasant environment. We were not staying at hotel but met for brunch. Everything was yummy. We didn't recognize alot of the staff and they may be new and service can be slow but everyone is so nice and the food is great and worth any wait. Will return again and again. Thanks!
Delicious and simple. A little pricey for students but great for a special night out
Excellent!! We went here for a quick bite after I dropped my daughter back at college. We will be back. The Brussels sprout side dish was amazing!!! Wish I could make them taste like that!!!
To bright and too noisy/loud. Food was good as was service.
1833 is clearly different than the restaurant in the old Oberlin Inn. It is smaller, more modern and colorful. And the noise level is definitely higher especially for dinner. Service is friendly and efficient even when they are busy. At dinner, bread did not come with our drinks but this was easily remedied with the "break bread" appetizer which came with plenty of warm focaccia, seasoned butter and olive oil. House specialties are original and very nicely presented with ample portions, both at breakfast and dinner.
This is always a great place for our meetings. As noted every aspect was outstanding.
Food was wonderful from appetizer to dessert. Waitress could have been a little more attentive (drink refills and such). Only thing that would have made a good experience a great one would be if the windows had shades as we were blinded by the setting sun for a portion of the meal.
We absolutely love this restaurant. Appetizer portions are quite small and very difficult to share although main entrées are ample and quite delicious.
Our biggest problem with the restaurant is the noise Level. Extremely loud if there are people in the bar or loud talkers in the restaurant It would be nice if they address this as others had also mentioned this. Perhaps carpeting or some other sound absorbing materials around the restaurant would be make it bearable.
Best restaurant in oberlin. Great food and service. Good for people watching. A bit pricy when compared to other local restaurants but in a class by itself and worth it if you can swing it.
My daughter and I both enjoyed our dinner at 1833.
We love the food and the service, but hope something can be done to make the room QUIETER!. Sound-absorbing ceiling tiles? Carpeting, or some other more sound-absorbing option for the floor? Something (tapestries commissioned from the Oberlin College art
department?) to absorb the sound bouncing off the walls?
There gave been times when we have had to move to the lobby to eat, because we could not hear one another. Even the other night, when there were not very many other diners, we had frequently to ask one another to repeat what they had said. We are concerned that you are missing out on a whole generation of older customers! For a while, we didn't even consider coming there when we had friends visiting with whom we needed to catch up conversationally.
This is not as important, but you should know that we miss the atmosphere at the old Oberlin Inn, where the restaurant was more formal, with its windows looking out on the lovely garden. The ambience made a meal there feel more like a special occasion for birthdays, anniversaries, or simply "dates"? This one feels more like the old cafe/bar" Brewsters. Have you considered redecorating a bit or even adding a more "elegant" room that has a more formal atmosphere? Or perhaps that is in your building plans already.
tasty food presented elegantly in an attractive, open setting. crying baby made it a little stressful. also, bread was fresh and delicious- however, there is a charge for it.
1833's emphasis on a seasonal farm-to-table produces very tasty offerings.
Great service and the food was outstanding as usual! Chef Jim Barnhart and his staff are unbelievable - the food was perfect and the 16 layer crepe cake was so unique and flavorful. Can't wait to go back!
We really enjoyed the well-prepared and presented, locally sourced, fresh food in a modern, urban chic atmosphere. The bar tender (also our waitress) was very friendly and attentive without being overly intrusive. We had a family group of 5 adults in town for a weekend series of chamber music concerts at Oberlin College. We stayed at the Oberlin Hotel and both the restaurant and hotel were excellent.
My wife's entree came with mashed potatoes & green beans as sides. I was surprised they charged an extra $5 to substitute additional green beans instead of the mashed potatoes. I guess they are pretty rigid about not making substitutions and penalizing you if you do.
Our server was prompt, efficient & thoughful. The food was exceptional !
