This continues to be one of the top restaurants in Calgary for me. Known for it’s steaks, especially the porterhouse, it also offers a great variety of other main courses. I had the duck, which was amazing! I would have trouble going back and not ordering it again, but there are other meals I would like to try there too. My colleague had the elk, which he enjoyed as much as I enjoyed the duck. We didn’t have appetizers or dessert, but we did enjoy an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon that was featured. I wish I remembered the name. Sorry. Excellent restaurant. It had been a couple of years since I had been there as I live in the SW but I won’t wait as long to go back the next time.

Enjoyed the Valentine's fixed menu. We each ordered three courses which we split up to include two appetizers, a salad, two mains and a shared dessert. Service was excellent and the room offers a very comfortable feel.

We have always had lovely dinners at Open Range. We will go back. The wine list is very nice and reasonably priced. The food is generally excellent. The service is excellent. We had a very nice table near the fireplace and enjoyed our conversation with each other, our server and the fellow at the next table who we have seen a few times previously. The menu has a number of game selections, as well as fish and fowl. The desserts were rich and decadent. We love this place

The food was tasty and inventive. Good use of the local produce on offer. Between four of us we ate elk, two cuts of bison, and arctic char, accompanied by many delicious preparations of corn and potatoes. This is Calgary in January, so the fresh greens were sparse. I had a side salad with delicious pickled apple and blue cheese; great flavour but a bit hard to eat, it sort of sprawled across the plate, great big leaves had to be cut before eating. I think there was a bit too much concern for the presentation here.

The pace was a bit off. Starters came very quickly but then we waited ages for the mains. Our server was polite and apologized for this, but it was quite a long gap.

We agreed that the highlight was my bison short ribs. I order short ribs whenever I see them, and these were as good as any I've had. Sticky, sweet, falling apart, full round flavour. They were on a delicious bed of grits with an excellent biscuit. My wife had the arctic char, beautifully prepared, and a side of asparagus with manchego.

All in all it was a good meal. Obviously at a place like this meat is going to be the main event (and the meat was very well cooked in all cases), but we would have preferred to see a wider range of vegetable sides. Our main dishes were also slow, but the food was great.

We decided to say goodbye to 2017 in style, so opted for Open Range. The food was amazing, the service was outstanding and the ambiance was just right. Will be back before long.
