Looking for seafood and a new dining choice, we found Mahina and Sun's-just up the road from our timeshare and in Waikiki. The menu was outstanding-I had the monchong dish and it was delicous, small baby tomatoes and potatoes, with chinese string beans. My wife tried the pono pork rilettes which she enjoyed immensely. Our server Alison was very friendly and helpful, with a cute smile and an island tan. We will try visiting again this trip or on our Dec trip.
Food was very good. But kind of pricey. What we had was family style dinner with a whole fish.
They charge $37/parsons for little bit of sashimi, rice , Veggies, pickles and peanuts on top of$99.00 fish at MP. Table was by the swimming pool kids jumping around.
The food was great.
Excellent poulet, sashimi avec un concert live
Service was horrible , so we only had an appetizer and a beer, then left...took forever just to get a beer too, very disappointed since we were supposed to eat dinner here that night. Would not recommend: (
Didn’t see our server for a good 20 min. The pizza with “uncured bacon” was all fat. It was gross, i picked it all off bc we never saw said server to tell her. and when she finally returned, she just basically said that’s what it is. Which in the service industry is not the right answer. We dined here a couple days before, gave it 5 Stars. Too bad a poor server can ruin the experience.
Nice cozy place with outstanding food
Mahina & Sun's is our second home. We live on the island and go there once or twice a month. We always take our visiting friends and family there. Great food, service and live music. Perfect every single time ! Highly recommended
Food and service was outstanding. Would definitely go back there again.
Love this restaurant!
This was at least our 25th time dinning here. Every time we come there’s that great greeting. The VIB is awesome. A packed bar scene and great local live music. Families as well as couples are having a great time BUT it’s the food and service that makes this restaurant into our top three on all of the Hawaiian Islands. Photos will follow but the one new dis that deserves rave reviews is their Fresh Kauai Shrimp Risotto that was better then any south of France dish we had since coming back from six weeks in France two weeks ago. The aromas of cooked down shells and the many ingredients that go into a traditional fish stock was very obvious and the ability for the staff to describe each dish as if they cooked it was highly appreciated.
They ran out of iced tea! How’s that possible?
Servers don’t forget to check on waters especially during this long hot summer :) we didn’t get offered a refill until we had paid the check.
Small, low key, and casual restaurant with relatively high noise level. Interesting menu with a focus on local seafood and ingredients. Our waitress was well informed and did a great job of explaining some of the local specialties. I had the monchung (?) with breadfruit and local tomatoes. The presentation was outstanding and delicious. Highly recommended
Wonderful fresh food. Nice mix of small plates and larger entrees. Great ambience.
While I respect the desire to have dishes with local ingredients, the food was severely underseasoned and lacked any acid balance. The meals we had were well cooked, but essentially flat in flavor.
Food was moderate, cost high, service friendly, choices limited
Came for brunch and we were offered coffee. We ordered 3. My husband drank his and the server offered my husband more. When we got the bill there were 4 coffees charged for $4 each. We asked and server said there’s no refills on coffee. Now this was regular coffee not a fancy coffee. Wish we would have known that refills were not included. Something I think a server should tell you. Other than the coffee issue, server was good but we just left feeling ripped off by the place.
Mahina and Sun's came highly recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint. The service was a little slow to start, but always very friendly. Once our orders were in everything moved quickly from there. They brought out some amazing boiled peanuts for the table to share. I'm not usually a big fan of boiled peanuts, but I couldn't get enough of these! The cocktails were unique and hand crafted. The entrees each had their own unique flair, but each was delicious. I would definitely recommend Mahina and Sun's to a friend and look forward to my next visit.
Delicious and so much fun!!
Loved this restaurant - more casual than Town but similar flavours. The grilled He'e salad and Moonfish were amazing. Also the atmosphere and staff were great - they really new the menu and were very helpful. Looking forward to coming back.
Delicious food. Retro setting. Highly recommended.
We were staying at the Surfjack hotel for a night and I was so happy to see that the in house restaurant was one of my favorite local chefs, Ed Kenney! We've visited two of his other restaurants, Town and Mud Hen Water, and he never disappoints! The atmosphere at Mahina and Sun's is fun and friendly. it is the kind of place that you will find people dressed up a bit for a night out on the town or slightly more comfortable, although maybe not straight off the beach. The service was fantastic and friendly and the food was of course on point! We started off with tasty cocktails and and local Kualoa Ranch oysters and then shared the kale salad. The salad was simple and delicious with a dressing that was almost more like a dry rub - but perfect! I had the Opah, my husband had the Monchong and we stole delicious bites from each others plates!! To finish things off we had dessert and were happy to see Pavlova on the menu! I've never seen this served at a restaurant and it was delicious, sweet, melt in your mouth and perfect paired with some yummy local fruits. Fantastic meal to make our night out extra special.
Food was all very solid and interesting. Kudos to Ed and the gang!
We enjoyed their family style dinner with deep fried snapper. All the sides were delicious & we look forward to returning for other dishes. The chowder & beignets are can't miss appetizers!
Amazing as always! Favorite place on Oahu!
Love this place and I have stay at the Surf Jack and while the second time in Hawaii I stay else(just to see what other places are like) - I came back for the food!
Big fans of Ed Kenny’s program. This did not disappoint.
Accidentally made reservations for the following night and didn’t realize until we showed up & they couldn’t find our rez. The hostess (& manager?) were very friendly and accomodated us even though it was a busy night. Service was great, nice atmosphere, and our food was delicious. Will definitely return!
I specifically chose this restaurant because it was on OpenTable and I wanted to get points. I've dined there in the past and I'm a member of their Surf Club. However, after I ate at M&S, I received an email from OpenTable that my reservation was ineligible for points. I'm still trying to resolve that issue with OpenTable and will update my review when it's resolved.
Awesome dinner! Can’t wait to go back!
Greeted well, table is a little small. Wait service excellent. Food—passes the lick the plate test. If I feel like licking the plate, the food was awesome. Smoke fish corn chowder was so good that I would go back just to have the soup. Risotto with prawns—crazy delish, the fried capers made the caper flavor much more subtle and the Kaua’i prawns were sweet! Strawberry cobbler —perfect sweetness versus tart. Would go back in a heartbeat.
This was our first time trying this restaurant since we were on a staycation in Waikiki. The ambiance was casual and quiet. Our server was extremely nice and helpful in our food selection. We liked that the food is locally sourced and the food was creative and delicious. We will return to try some of the other entrees.
the food was delicious, and we really enjoyed the farm-to-table concepts that were presented on the menu.
Great modern vibe hidden in busy Waikiki!
Pizza was delicious and our server was great, loved the live music...
Excellent use of local ingredients, splendidly prepared (Family Feast), one of just a few Places we take out-of-town guests. Ambiance is retro Waikiki c. 1960's, hip, au thentic, welcoming, indoor-outdoor. Subtle wafted fragrence of plumeria, pikake. You know it's special when local folks overcome the Waikiki hassles to eat there. Often.
Special birthday with lovely friends
Having Coeliac Disease can make dining out very challenging. When I alerted our server of my Coeliac Disease and other dietary restrictions due to IBS, our server went through the menu with me and consulted with the chef to check menu items could be adapted to suit.
The atmosphere was relaxed and not too loud.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, both having seafood.
I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone with Coeliac Disease or dietary restrictions.
