Really unique dining spot with excellent food and atmosphere
Just found this great place by chance. The octopus salad was amazing and both entrees were exceptional. I think I may go again before I leave Honolulu!! Many other items I would like to try on menu.
Great spot - awesome food well executed
A large majority of the menu items are locally sourced. We ordered the naked pig pizza, the pork ragu, the harissa chicken, and an assortment of desserts. Everything was wonderful. Pasta prepared to perfection, great pizza and chicken cooked to perfection. I highly recommend Mahina and Sons as well as Ed Kinney’s other restaurants - Town & Kaimuki Superette. A local chef highlighting Hawaii’s local cuisine.
This was my third time for dinner at Mahina and Sun's and the food keeps getting better and better. We did the family fish feast and loved all of the dishes. The whole fish was perfectly prepared and easy to pull off the bone and serve. The individual side dishes were all delicious, especially the breadfruit. Service is always good here but it was exceptional at this visit. I will definitely be back for more! My four out of town guests loved it as well. They thought it was a great place to get local flavor and I agree!
Best meal we had in Honolulu. Super creative, delicious dishes. Great atmosphere, hip decor, great little store to browse out front while you wait for a table.
Absolutely loved every single item we ordered. Fantastic service, amazing food and a fantastic atmosphere. The beignets are not to be missed!
This is a must for Sunday brunch. The setting, partially outdoors in a retro hotel, is a great departure from the standard Waikiki casual restaurants. Brunch is both creative and filled with great tastes. Our group shared the modern version of a loco moco, great waffles and scones but there are many other terrific items on the menu. We elected to sit at a picnic table in the restaurant’s outdoor area which was great for watching the scene around the pool. Sunday brunch features an excellent guitarist with great voice.
It was amazing the food was so great
Mahina and Sun's is emerging as my favorite restaurant on Oahu. The food is really stellar. It's not the kind of place where the plating is very fancy, but the food tastes amazing and the combinations are just original enough to be intriguing but not so original as to be weird. I also love the hip ambience and friendly waitstaff.
Standout dishes on this visit were a crudo with brown butter and ice plants, and some unctuous disks of pork rillette with mostarda and sweet bread rolls. The shrimp risotto was also outstanding.
They also have a lot of delicious cocktails that are festive and not too sweet.
Eating out in Waikiki always begins with "Sticker Shock" as one wonders how your travel budget will last for a 10-day stay. As a Canadian visitor, the exchange is also top-of-mind. Having said that, for an evening out, this restaurant was top-notch and, besides, you can do takeaway on other evenings!
Our server was very helpful and attentive and made our first evening in HI most memorable. The musician playing at poolside provided lovely background to accompany the excellent food and local beers. We really enjoyed our avocado tacos and seared tuna [perfectly done with excellent accompaniments]. We found this restaurant in our Lonely Planet Guide to Oahu [2017 ed.] and it did not disappoint at all. Great choice for a special evening out while vacationing in Waikiki and somewhat off the "beaten track!" Thank you!
Food was spectacular. The service was great. The use of local ingredients was really well thought out.
Hip restaurant in updated 1950s hotel. Friendly and efficient service, creative and tasty food.
We absolutely loved it!
Jasmine our server was amazing and excellent with Stevie, recommendations and overall we could not have been happier...
We will for sure be back 👍🏼
Fantastic service, great live music and food!
Good service in a relaxed and nice atmosphere. Flavours were bland in some of the dishes. Overall a pleasant enough experience
Trendy but relaxed. The drinks were good but the food was only ok. Very over priced.
Went here for my 50th Birthday. Despite some problems with the hotel’s power supply these guys were superb. They managed the wait till power came back, it became a relaxing poolside sit next to the Surfjack pool ( worth coming for that alone). When the power came back the kitchen unleashed their best. Without doubt the best food we had in the week we were in Hawaii. Service excellent, friendly and the ambiance of the whole restaurant was just really cool. I kind of stumbled across the place on the web, and I couldn’t have found a better place for my Birthday. The local fare menu had something for everyone in the family, from sensational fish to pizzas. It’s not often our youngest to oldest, vegetarians and carnivores all happy with dinner. Also the Pavlova and fruit excellent if you have a second stomach to fit it in!
I have looked around the other offerings in Waikiki, this place is the best if you like excellent food in a great atmosphere. If you want to sit under the big tree and pay a fortune for average food down on the beach (which I have done) go for it. Good luck. Another institution The cheesecake factory cooked my wife’s fish until it bounced. These guys on the other hand are the real deal in the kitchen, and I loved the setting and service. Great dinner and will be back.
Amazing meal. Every appetizer was delicious!
Great food and ambience to celebrate vday!
Great server!! She was amazing. Good food and value but you are in Waikiki so it is expensive and understandable so.
We loved the retro ambiance of this place.
We shared the avocado tacos and the pork rillettes as starters and both were fantastic.
For our entree we shared the shrimp risotto which was so fresh but decadent at the same time.
Since we were celebrating a birthday we received a free dessert of our choice. We shared the Pavlova. It came with tons of fresh local fruit, local honey, and fresh whipped cream. We loved every bite.
Thanks Mahina & Sun’s for an awesome birthday dinner!
Nice and cozy eatery. Service was great, very attentive. The coffee was great, and she even gave us a cup to go. Would dine here again.
I wish i could have had a better experience for my special Bday celebration, however it really turned out horrible. I made sure to say it was a birthday yet was not greeted once. Our server sucked at telling us what the happy hour specials were and was always making us wait. The atmosphere was beautiful, the hotel, beautiful, food pretty good, drinks over priced, and the worst was i went there for my bday dinner and did not feel special whatsoever. Pls train your staff better, cause she sucked.
Fresh local flavors on everything from poke, pizza, burgers, fresh fish to different fruit on mochi desserts!
Everything was tasty and fresh but a bit overpriced. The avocado tacos were panko fried and yummy but tiny and $6 each. The amberjack crudo was interesting with the kukui brown butter garnish but sometimes the salt overpowered the dish. No complaints about the Kale Caesar salad thought, it was delicious and conveniently, both the kale and croutons were cut into small bites making it very fun and easy to eat. We also ordered some fresh squeezed guava juice which came out to $7 for about 4 ounces, a bit disappointing as i finished the glass in two sips. Overall, I enjoyed my meal, just bummed the value of it all was poor.
I went to listen to Aloha Got Soul for brunch. A guitarist was playing that was awesome. It was pretty empty, which was unexpected, and gave a very quiet ambiance - maybe because it was Super Bowl Sunday. Unfortunately, the poke bowl I had was probably the most tasteless I've ever had and they charged $17 or $18 for it. The pork adobo fried rice was better but not great. Don't think I'd go back for the food.
Surprisingly good. Lots of local folks there. I like that!
This was by far the most lovely meal I have had on the island. We did the Mahina family feast - and I have literally told a dozen strangers already about how amazing it was. We had a lovely, friendly server who gave great advice about ordering two orders of the family feast and a couple more side dishes for the five of us - it was more than enough; and everything we ate was devine. Avacado tacos, kale salad, shrimp rissoto, the feast was a whole roasted or fried (we did the latter) tender, mild flakey fish served with 3 dipping sauces, and five different small plates of sides - amazing roasted carrots, pickled veggies, bread fruit roasted with great dill sour cream, and two other specialties. Every morsel = delicious! And desset afterwards, too!
Come with friends - and hang in this casual vibe place for a top notch gourmet delight.
Great restaurant. Awesome food and service. Thank you so much for an awesome time.
Food was just ok. Portions were fine just appetizer was basically what came with wifea meal. Basically got my drink got my appetizer got my food all with in a 20 min span. For the price i would like to enjoy my food a little bit. Was not even halfway through appetizer when food came.
Creative tasty food and great friendly service as always.
Most delicious breakfast ever! With fresh ingredients prepared to perfection. Congenial Service. Live jazz music was awesome. Made my birthday breakfast extra special. Thank you Mahana and Sun’s! PS: the fresh pineapple juices, Kona coffee, and Passion flower fresh juice were out of this world! Beautiful quiet spot in bustling Waikiki! Overlooks the Surfjack pool. Aroma of tropical flowers everywhere! Loved it!
This place is fun & casual in a hip retro boutique hotel. The food was delicious, although overpriced for the portion size.
Great locally sourced food and great cocktails. Our waitress (Saundry or Saundy?) was awesome!
We had a great dinner! The food was delicious. Our server was super nice and great. However I had made a reservation since it was my birthday, and I was with my family. The host made us sit at the picnic table because there was no room for us anywhere else. When we asked if there was anywhere else to sit, they said they could "cram" us in somewhere else. Who wants to be crammed anywhere when its your birthday and you made a reservation?? It could have been fine, but on your birthday you want something that is a little bit more comfortable than a picnic table. I even noted on the reservation that this was for a birthday. We also ordered appetizers which never came...the waiter did remove it from our check. Oh well, just be aware you might sit at a picnic table if you make a reservation...
We came here for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday morning. I initially ordered the bacon/cheddar scone and their yogurt/granola, but had to change that order due to food allergies. I ordered the chocolate mochi waffle which was one quarter piece of a waffle with black sesame gelato. It was tasty, but generally not worth the $8 or $10 menu price. The mister ordered their avocado toast which lacked seasoning. I know their menu indicates a special seasoning on the avocado toast, but simple salt & pepper were lacking. Our bill ended up being about $30 so paying $10 for valet plus tip just felt excessive. I know they have a kamaaina swim club but it didn't make sense for us to try to run up our bill to $50 for free valet. The one thing that we absolutely loved was the ambience and live music. Other than that, the experience left us unlikely to return.
Fantastic creative brunch in a mad-men poolside setting l. An oasis in the Waikiki madness
Not great value for what we paid, was rather disappointed. Struck me as odd the prices were so high for what was a very casual dining environment. Also very limited on vegetarian options, if you are vegetarian/vegan definitely not the best option.
