The best reason to be in Waikiki! If you are with a group order the Family Fish Feast. Whole fish (snapper) deep fried with amazing sides a desserts. Delicious and fun! The staff is super friendly. Parking tip- Park at Zoo and Biki bike to Surf Jack. Parking dock right near the front door.
Limited menu with fresh local ingredients. Pleasant setting.

We made a dinner reservation at Mahina & Suns while staying at the Surfjack Hotel for our honeymoon. The cocktails and food were all a little pricey, but very good. Ambiance was, as the hotel it is in, hip and cute. We appreciated the interesting use of local ingredients, such as ulu (breadfruit) and the emphasis on seafood. To start, we split the opah corn chowder. The opah was delicious and interesting in combination with the chowder, but overall, the dish was just ok and could use with a little spice. For the main course, I got the kauai shrimp risotto, which was very good. The shrimp was perfectly cooked. The risotto was a bit loose for a traditional risotto, but very tasty!! My husband got the monchong with ulu, which was also very very well cooked. The ulu provided an interesting alternative to a traditional starch like potatoes! However, we noted pretty significant variability in the size of the monchong filet between orders-- the guy next to us got twice as large of a filet than my husband did, but that being said, we certainly didn't need more than we got. The highlight of the meal was dessert-- we got the dark chocolate butter mochi with black sesame gelato and lilikoi jam. The combination of flavors was awesome, it wasn't overly sweet, and it played homage to the local classic butter mochi while still being original. I highly recommend that dish!!
Overall, everything was very good, but about as expected for the pricepoint.

Loved this spot. More locals than most of Waikiki, food was incredible. Would eat there every night while here!! I was bold and tried local fish I’ve never had. It did not disappoint!
Arrived a few minutes early. Directed by hostess to wait in an area overwhelmed by the swimming pool noise and odors. She then forgot about us. Dining seating areas are in outdated sketchy location with bad lighting or even worse beat up picnic tables. (McDonald's is a more welcoming restaurant). Wine grossly overpriced for nature of restaurant. Came very close to leaving. Pork ricclette just OK. Pasta with pork ragu OK. Monchong was very good but presentation uninspired and not worth the price. This is our second disappointment with Ed Kenney restaurants. (Town was similarly uninspired 2 years ago). Unlikely to ever return to this overrated overpriced group of restaurants. Far better experiences at Morimoto Asia, Roys, Halekulani, or Flour and Barley. Don't understand the high rating.
A hidden gem. Happy hour pizza special is the bargain of the Waikiki dining scene. Excellent Maui Brewing Company craft brews.
Not a bad restaurant but definitely wouldn't go back. Recommended by a tour guide whose other recommendations were off the charts, I was excited to try this place out on my last night in Hawaii only to be let down. Ambiance was great, energetic, young and lively with a nice setting. Service was bland and careless with the server just barely going through the motions. Food had good flavor and great presentation but was definitely the smallest portions I received on the whole island. Enthusiastic yet overpriced. Drinks were great, probably the best part of the restaurant. Long story short, if you want apps and a drink for a social, its a good place. Otherwise you'll spend over $100 for 2 people and still leave hungry.

Mahina and Suns continues to be a welcome addition to the restaurant scene in Waikiki. Those looking to enjoy food that is infused with the heart and soul of the islands will be amused by every bite and every sip, as each has its own story to tell.
The challenge is to be open to trying something new, some ingredient that you have never heard of before because most likely you will not be disappointed.
A casual and trendy local hangout in a less busy section of Waikiki. Excellent locally-caught fish, farm to table produce, great bar, friendly service, what's not to like.
Definitely a foodies’ restaurant. There are many tastes I’ll be trying to recreate back at home. Pickled mustard seeds? Jeez. I wouldn’t have thought of that in a million years.
Good food, tasty and healthy and not too expensive. Breakfast especially very nice, good service too
Someone on wait staff must of taken the night off as the one server worked hard to keep up. Appreciated her effort.
But the Pizza crust was not edible. Very tough. Even with serrated knife could not cut, chew, and did not want to swallow. Great server made no comment when only one piece had been consumed.
Ono was excellent. Tako salad good.
But For entrees at over 30 $’s and pizza over 20$’s. Much better places within a few blocks.
Love the vibes at this place. The food was unbelievably delicious, and 100% worth the splurge. Being able to try local ingredients integrated into vibrant, healthy dishes was truly a treat. I've wanted to try breadfruit for a while now and Mahina really delivered. The dessert did not disappoint either - pavlova topped with delicious lilikoi, guava, and other exotic fruits. I am so glad we came upon Mahina & Sun's - it is not to be missed.
Must visit! I've been in Honolulu for 4dyas so far and this was the best by far!
Interesting menu with spot on descriptions and recommendations from wait staff. Sonda D. was wonderful waitress. We had a variety of the fish dishes, all excellent. Would definitely go for the octopus salad. Laid back vibe and friendly atmosphere.
Fish was excellent. Steak was served cold and unseasoned. Very disappointing.
Super cool hotel with a great pool that has been updated in a great Hawaiian and modern way without losing the exotic past. Awesome fun place to eat
The grilled he'e and watercress salad is our favorite starter. Love the peanuts too. Our waiter was great as he even asked if we wanted more peanuts to which I replied 'Yes please'. The naked pig had a thin crust and just hit the spot.
Food excellent as always. Supervisor (Bob) was indifferent and dismissive.
Husband and mother-in-law ordered the same dish. One dish was significantly smaller in proportion size.
I prefer the dinner menu. I didn’t realize the brunch menu was so scarce.
We celebrated our Easter brunch here. Atmosphere, service and food were perfect! Nice relaxed and fun atmosphere with incredible dishes! Needless to say, we had a great time!
Hideous music in bar area that reverberated into dining area. Music was requiem for a funereal. Glad to learn a one night only event

Everything about our dinner here was wonderful. Our waitress was super cute, knowledgeable, & attentive. Our appetizers & entrees were fabulous, all fresh & expertly seasoned. We enjoyed the cocktails, especially the daily special with freshly squeezed quads juice. While tucked away in a hotel off the beaten path of Waikiki, we felt fortunate to have discovered it albeit Trip Advisor.
Small, selective menu highlighting the best Hawaiian-Pacific Rim fusion. Guest bartenders on site often mixing some unique cocktails and some of the better snacks and apps ever featured on a menu. Back in a heart beat and they have a great rewards system set up for "frequent flyers."
We absolutely loved Mahina & Suns! The food was spectacular and the service was amazing. We will definitely be going back!
Let me start by saying that the food was excellent but very pricey. My wife and I would love to return when we visit Waikiki again. On the down side I felt the restaurant was too "full of itself". From the moment we walked in I felt the staff was more interested in presenting an air of sophistication and food snobbery then making us feel welcome. This is Hawaii after all. This restaurant is not laid back and does not have a home feel. I almost felt that as the food was delivered to our table it was thrown down at us as if the server was offended that we were eating this wonderful food. His mumbling explanation of what he served was not understandable. This restaurant exemplifies how serious food has become when if fact it should be a joy and a pleasure.

Just found this great place by chance. The octopus salad was amazing and both entrees were exceptional. I think I may go again before I leave Honolulu!! Many other items I would like to try on menu.
Great spot - awesome food well executed
A large majority of the menu items are locally sourced. We ordered the naked pig pizza, the pork ragu, the harissa chicken, and an assortment of desserts. Everything was wonderful. Pasta prepared to perfection, great pizza and chicken cooked to perfection. I highly recommend Mahina and Sons as well as Ed Kinney’s other restaurants - Town & Kaimuki Superette. A local chef highlighting Hawaii’s local cuisine.
This was my third time for dinner at Mahina and Sun's and the food keeps getting better and better. We did the family fish feast and loved all of the dishes. The whole fish was perfectly prepared and easy to pull off the bone and serve. The individual side dishes were all delicious, especially the breadfruit. Service is always good here but it was exceptional at this visit. I will definitely be back for more! My four out of town guests loved it as well. They thought it was a great place to get local flavor and I agree!
Best meal we had in Honolulu. Super creative, delicious dishes. Great atmosphere, hip decor, great little store to browse out front while you wait for a table.
