Magdalena Ratings and Reviews
This was a great restaurant for a special, high-end dinner where you want the best of everything. I took my wife here to give her a nice, pre-travel send-off, and based on the reviews I saw, I was confident the restaurant would be pretty good.
I am pleased to tell anyone it was much better than good, it was fantastic, one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Everything from the chardonnay recommendation to the appetizers to the main course was excellently prepared, and there wasn't a mediocre item that we tasted. The beef was elegant and delicious, and the pork belly was very tasty and complex. Even the humble vegetable soup appetizer was smooth complexly flavorful. Our deserts, prepared in-house, were both fresh with perfect temperatures, and were delightful. The service was spot-on, well-timed, and charming, and significantly enhanced the experience, which we enjoyed for far longer that we usually take for dinner.
We don't typically give 5 stars across the board to restaurants because something is typically a little bit off. However, Magdalena's earned every star and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the experience. While we can't eat here every week, my wife has advised me that we will be back.
This restaurant had been recommended by a friend who said it was one of the best meals she has had. We were disappointed. The service was good but not outstanding as we had expected and the seating layout in the restaurant was not ideal. I think in the summer when it is warm and light at night and they use the outdoor seating it would be better but in winter it is a very small restaurant and we sat right by the bar. Not the ambience for a special occasion. The appetizer (mushroom soup) was amazing and my husband enjoyed the foie gras but the rib eye steak was the worst steak i have ever had in a fine dining restaurant. There was more fat than meat and it was difficult to eat. I recommend you try this restaurant if you go in the summer and avoid the rib eye steak!! Otherwise you would be better off at Ruth's Chris.
Perfect in every way! If you consider yourself a foodie this place is not to be missed. Can’t wait to go back again. The atmosphere is highly refined and posh but still comfortable and relaxing. Our server was superb and clearly well trained. Every dish was a culinary adventure. The wine list is world class and extensive. And there is free valet to boot. A perfect experience from start to finish.
A little disappointed. The cost of the meal with drinks was exorbitant. While they do carry unique dishes, it still seemed overpriced. Also, the wait staff was confused about which tables had which dishes several times. I did not like the open seating area in the back of this restaurant as much as the other seating in the front. It was too open and I could hear multiple conversations around me, so it wasn't very private. The food was delicious, however, aside from these drawbacks.
Magdalena is my favorite Baltimore restaurant. From the moment you arrive at the valet, you feel most welcome and special. The waiting staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere romantic and inviting. The menu changes frequently and I am always pleased with the variety of choices. The food is incomparable and both a delight to one's palate and visual senses. The maitre'd always remembers previous guests and keeps a list of past favorite choices, even the type of water, plain or sparkling. A truly memorable and amazing experience. I can't wait to go back. It is ideal for holidays, celebrations, a romantic get-away or gathering with friends and/or family.
Couldn't have asked for a more. I went for my engagement dinner and Magdalena's distinguished Executive Chef Mark Levy prepared an unbelievably tasty feast. We did the white truffle tasting menu and would have paid twice what we did. Highlight of the meal was the lamb wellington which was as beautiful as it was delicious. We opted to skip the wine pairings and have Claudio the cellar manager/master sommelier pick us out some bottles from their cellar. Boom! He nailed it. Eric our server was unpretentious and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. He made us feel like we were his most important guests of the evening. In fact everyone at Magdalena made sure we were enjoying our special night. Even Marty, the hostess with the mostess!, stopped by to fill our water and check up to make sure we were enjoying everything. My only regret is not booking a room too. Having to leave was such a disappointment. We will definitely be back and can't recommend a more creative, elegant and enjoyable dining experience in the Baltimore/DC area. A once in a lifetime moment that my fiance and I will never forget. Thank you, Magdalena!
My venison was delicious and prepared as I requested. The lobster seemed to be missing something; perhaps we should have asked for drawn butter. Our waitress was attentive and discretely checked on us however she didn't describe in detail the dishes that we heard described by another waiter.
Magdalena is a creatively lovely restaurant unlike any other in Baltimore.
This is an outstanding restaurant with creative and well prepared food, extraordinary wine list, and incredible staff. Feels like eating at home -- so friendly. Formal yet familiar. I love this place. The fall menu -- the venison in particular -- fits the season well and is creative. The hotel is great as well!
An intimate space with a focus on details making the overall experience very pleasant. What a pleasure to be in a restaurant where thought has been given to acoustics allowing for quiet conversation without hearing the noise, bustle, clanging and adjacent conversations. 3/4 of our party loved the food, 1 foodie was disappointed. The restaurant handled the complaint with class in an appropriate manner. Overall a very enjoyable evening with staff all aiming to please. Interesting menu and excellent wines make this a very good choice.
At Magdalena, our dinner dishes were delicious and the service was superb. We were celebrating the 75th birthday of my companion, and they delivered dessert with a lit candle. My Cosmopolitan was perfect. The white wine I wanted was not chilled so they served me another without charge.
Wonderful from just pulling up in the car. Superb service at every step. Quiet eye pleasing room, we ate in TreasuryRoom.
Every course was spectacular on the eye and even better in the taste. Will absolutely be going back.
I have to say but this was an outstanding restaurant experience for my 34th birthday. I went on Yelp trying to look for something low-key but special being that I am new to the Baltimore area. And upon the top 10 results the Magdalena restaurant was a part of that. I was beyond pleased to be quite honest from the moment that we pulled up to the valet and the restaurant manager which we did not know at the time was Emmanuel to our waiter Chef everything was impeccable and outstanding. It was a very quiet but special and amazingly delicious me off that I had a chance to share with my significant other. I would definitely go again and would recommend this restaurant to anyone it easily became my top favorite restaurant to go to and to return to. Its a Must go!!!
Wonderful warm service & outstanding & creative dishes. Loved the cold seafood platter. The ceviche & lobster salad were outstanding. Desserts were excellent especially the strudel. We stayed at The Ivy which is fantastic. Breakfast for hotel guests only was AMAZING. Worth the drive from Philly.
My husband and I stayed at the Ivy Hotel and friends joined us for dinner at Magdalena. The meal was fabulous from beginning to end! Although expensive it is worth the price! The ambiance was perfect, the food delicious, and the staff knowledgeable. We will certainly be returning on our next trip to Baltimore!
Just returned from Magdalena celebrating my husband's Birthday.
Can't say this place gave us a joyful experience we hoped for.
AMBIANCE: We were placed in the room with many little hats on the walls and middle eastern
motifs on the "windows" and tables. Other "decoration" were white painted brick walls and "bare bone' wooden doors and ceiling. Nothing was very appealing + the wall seats were not too comfortable either being too deep and low.
FOOD: Menu descriptions sounded great. Presentations of the dishes were quite attractive. Taste of all the savory dishes was very mediocre and bland. Apple strudel for dessert was a highlight of the whole dinner and was outstanding. Drinks (in our case we had 3 cocktails) were very week in alcohol to everything else ratio. The pricing was outrageously expensive.
SERVICE: Nice, "trying", the waiter was too "babbly", but not very professional.
VALUE: Beyond overpriced, totally inadequate to the experience.
CONCLUSION: It wasn't bad experience, but wasn't great one either. For this kind of money you can have much better experience somewhere else, so it's not worth coming back for us. But if you have some extra money to spend for the faked "glamour" of this place then why not?
That's probably where all these positive reviews come from.
Nice atmosphere. Food was good. We'd recommend the mushrooms on toast and the pork belly. The service was friendly but very slow between courses. It took at least 20 min to a 2nd round of drinks. We waited another 20 min for dessert. Nice experience but overpriced.
This was my fourth (and best) meal at Magdalena, a wonderful restaurant in Baltimore that ranks among the City's best. Situated in the Ivy Hotel, a luxury hotel fashioned inside an old historic Baltimore mansion, the restaurant has the cozy appeal of a place for those who have come to enjoy a special evening. The place is small, and uses that to its advantage to create a warm environment with soft lighting, elegant furnishing, and a top-notch staff. I'm unfamiliar with the chef, but the food was phenomenal. The chef knows not only how to present a plate, but to balance flavors and textures and aromas just so, creating amazing appetizers, entrees and desserts. The evening was nothing short of amazing, and its memory will last a long time.
Our meals were excellent. Would recommend the seafood appetizer. A great value and consistently excellent. The service was not as smooth as we have experienced before but it was a busy evening and they probably needed another person. Overall, it is the perfect place for a great dining experience.
My hubby and I were celebrating our anniversary and we had an amazing meal from the foie gras to the passion fruit creme brûlée. The duck and rockfish were fabulous. Fresh Bellinis to start it off. Heard another gentleman comment he was eating the best salmon he had in is life. Will definitely come back. It's pricey but so what!!!!
I was blown away by the food and service at Magdalena. Our server Beth was spectacular. She gave us great recommendations and was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. Sommelier Claudio paired our dishes beautifully. I can't wait to return. Thank you for making our meal shine. See you again very soon.
Excellent in every way from the valet to seating to service and above all the food, delicious and imaginative. Pricey but more than worth it. Very accommodating. Even got a tour of the hotel. A great experience overall. They made our special occasion even more special. Will definitely go back
Had a wonderful time at dinner in a Thursday night in August. There was a live band in the backyard. We were asked if we would be okay sitting at a table within the listening areas of the music, or if we would rather sit at a quiet table. We opted for the live music.
The band was very good. The service was exceptional - very attentive throughout the meal. The food was also excellent.
Overall, just a fantastic evening and meal.
