About Ma Goa
For over two decades, Deepak Kapoor has strived to achieve a sense of family dining at his Traditional Indian - and Putney staple, Ma Goa. Since its opening in 1993, Dee and his Mother (Ma) have continued to evolve their menu, adapting flavours and cooking with fresh ingredients procured weekly from Tooting Market. Their only rule? Everything must be delicious!
While many Indian Restaurants now use short-cuts in their cookery, the chefs at Ma Goa are proud of the fact that each of their dishes are cooked individually, The Kitchen is very much a Family operation - Ma still cooks most mornings while Dee's three children contribute ideas and love to help the chefs!
In 2017, the Kapoor family did a complete overhaul of their successful eatery. Adding a craft beer tap wall and replacing the white table cloths with a rustic, marketplace interior, they have brought Ma Goa back to its roots: fuss-free, authentic food straight from the streets of India.

Ma Goa Ratings and Reviews
I love Ma Goa - the food is immense. The only issue I have is with the price of alcohol, particularly the beer. It is overpriced and often in half pints for the price of a normal pint in other curry houses. Could do with a bit of background music.
The staff are great and so is the food so despite these small grumbles I will continue going here everytime I feel like a curry. The lamb dishes are superb.
The food is fantastic, lots of subtle flavours with just the right level of heat to enhance but not overwhelm other flavours. Great setting and service. The kicker to the experience is the wine shop next door called Glug. Owned by the same people I recommend you go in before your meal. You can sample a couple of wines with the very knowledgeable Ben who will guide you to the best bottle or two that will suit your dining experience. It is all a bit special. Enjoy.
Good service, and a different take on your usual curry house, more like cuisine in some respects. An unusual selection of beers rather than the usual Cobra/ Kingfisher offerings.
Slightly more expensive rather than your usual curry house but worth it for the tasty food on offer.
A really enjoyable experience with delicious food, wine, a fun and lively atmosphere and excellent service. A fresh and original take on a traditional Indian meal: super quality of the food with a wide selection of fresh and tasty dishes . They also recommended some wonderful wines to go with our meal. Thanks for a great evening, we'll be back soon!
We have been dining here from the first days this family-run welcoming restaurant opened. It has maintained the highest standards of authentic Goan (Portuguese-influenced) cuisine throughout all those years. Every dish is a gem, with the spices and herbs finely balanced so that all the subtle flavours are allowed to shine through. From delicate starters, through a wide spectrum of main courses to far-too tempting deserts, they never seem to put a foot wrong. There is an excellent, modestly-priced wine list (including some excellent Portuguese wines - ) and beers if the sensitivity of your taste-buds demands it. If this sounds "over the top", but if you appreciate lovingly prepared food from the sub-continent, you must go there and be convinced.
"Noisy but Nice".......Food very good as always. Service good as usual. The acoustics of the room make it a very noisy atmosphere if there are a lot of diners - which there usually is - so had to shout at each other but still enjoyed ourselves.
I like Indian food so thought I would give it a try. The food was very nice but i like eating in the way that is natural in India ( all dishes together with condiments) not English style one by one. I appreciated the attention of my host who explained in detail why Goan food was different to north indian food and totally enjoyed my desire to eat it as intended! That made my experience very enjoyable indeed. Food portions were enough for two so i ended up taking the leftovers home and they were as lovely as the night before. Recommended for small groups who want the real thing. Very enjoyable.
I visited Ma Goa on Tuesday 18th July at 7:30pm. I expected it to be quiet but it got quite busy and noisy. The customers were, on the whole, young. The atmosphere was relaxed and the decor, slightly frayed around the edge, was acceptable. The service was friendly and we never felt rushed. The only real wait we had was for coffee and tea at the end of our meal.
The food was good, the menu quite short, and I would recommend the porco vindaloo, deliciously spicy. Drinks were reasonably priced.
If you want a meal out with friends I would happily suggest a visit to Ma Goa. It won't be long till I visit again.
I was a regular at Ma Goa when I used to live in Putney. It has been 08 years since I left London and I went back to Putney to experience the food. My family has very fond memories of our lunches and dinners at Ma Goa. Was delighted to note that the quality of food has not changed and it remains as tasty as ever. The service is friendly, warm and very customer focussed. I enjoyed our evening at Ma Goa and will be visiting again when I am back in the UK. Highly recommended if you like authentice, home cooked indian food. I am a veggie so cannot speak to the meat dishes but I do know that my family members who eat meat, love their meat dishes as well.
I hope Ma Goa continues to thrive and is around for many many more years to come.
