Little Gem Saloon
Relive the sounds and sensations of New Orleans’ legendary jazz age – a time that witnessed the fusion of cultures which transformed ragtime and marching music into jazz and blended the savory spices that revolutionized and made famous New Orleans’ Creole cuisine. The Little Gem Saloon offers a new century twist on a historic space that first introduced New Orleans’ jazz to the world, as well as the first tempting tastes of traditional Creole cuisine. Located in the historic 400 block of South Rampart Street, the Little Gem Saloon is just steps from the Superdome and streetcar line, and within blocks of the French Quarter.
Quite a bad night for us- we had reservations and arrived on time; however, there were no tables available. The hostess brought tables from the back and put them right by the door- literally in the door. We refused to take the table and elected to wait until one came available. The table wasn't offered to anyone else and was taken back. We were then seated as some unhappy guests were leaving. We could not hear them but thought they said something about 45 minutes. We ordered drinks and appetizers and got ready to enjoy our night as there was a great vibe in the place. The apps came before our drinks. The fried oysters were delicious but there were only four of them. The crab dip was fair and the toast not toasted. We asked for toasted bread which we never received. Finally our drinks came. In a few minutes the waitress came back and told us that the restaurant was closing at 730 pm so we needed to order. It was 721pm. I asked why they took a reservation if they were closing so early. She apologized and asked if we wanted to put in a order before the cooks closed the kitchen. We had each drank about half of our cocktails- which were the worst that we had while we were in NOLA. If you know NOLA, you know that walking around looking for a place is hard as everyone has a reservation. We could not even book another one on opentable because we had to wait for the 1.5 hours to pass to get another one. We paid and left. I would have given us our drinks at a minimum. Poor service, fair food of the little we got. Go somewhere else.
We arrived on time for our reservation. We ordered a glass of wine and were very disappointed in the flavor of the wine. Our waitress was extremely nice and we really felt sorry for her as she was obviously stressed and stretched very thin. Our water glasses were never refilled. The menu was very promising and we were very excited to get our dinner. We were however beyond disappointed with our food. My daughter ordered an 8 ounce hamburger but there is no way that burger was 8 ounces. It was dwarfed by the bun. There were also no condiments. She had a hamburger, lettuce, tomato and onion with no mustard, mayonnaise or ketchup. I ordered the Creole Shrimp with Cheese Grits. The shrimp were decent but the grits were totally tasteless. The Leek and Onion Biscuit was served cold and hard with no butter. My other daughter ordered the Parmesan Crusted Catfish which was decent, but also did not have a lot of flavor. The macaroni and cheese was the only thing worth ordering. We will not be going back.
Food and environment are great main reason for bad review was inability of kitchen to get food out in timely manner - waited an hour on a busy night for appetizers and a few items never showed up- observed same problem at other tables. We are from out of town so maybe this is not the norm - the food once it arrived was great and music was amazing hope they can get things sorted on the delivery.
You must try the shrimp and grits!
The room set up is perfect for viewing the bands, especially if dining. Volume is perfect - loud enough to be enveloped in the music but not so loud that you can't hear your dinner companions and server. Arrive half an hour before your reservation for best seating.
Love this place....Been here twice now to see Kermit Ruffins. Our server Ron was excellent! Great food as well ☺️
The music and ambiance were great and the food was decent but the waitperson seemed incompetent. They mixed up our drink order, forgot our appetizers and spilled beer onto my plate with food.
Wonderful venue-- great music in a lovely room, good food, fun times.
The food is great but it’s even better when Kermit Ruffins is playing with his band!
The gentleman at the door was personable and greeted us promptly. Our server was equally charming. The layout was a disappointment. I was expecting it to be a bit more “upscale.” Prices were upscale. I wouldn’t go there for an intimate dinner. It lacks intimacy. The food was subpar. Catfish is mastered in this city. If your going to offer fried seafood, you must be as good as the homegrown masters. With all of that being said, the staff and entertainment made our evening enjoyable.
Nice restaurant with good service. Not much for celiac. The shrimp and grits were spicy.
great music--good food--good service-----------------------------------------------------
I am a New Orleans native and had stayed away from the Little Gem Saloon, thinking it would be too touristy. Yes, it is perfect for the tourists, but the locals are the ones who can truly appreciate it. I ordered the seafood stew which was quite good and the chocolate profiteroles which you can't find everywhere. My husband and I ordered our music tickets for Deacon John and reserved a table which was good planning. Deacon John was fabulous. He performed for two hours without a break -- singing, directing the band, playing the banjo and guitar.
The great food and ambience at The Little Gem are only outdone by the excellant bands they book. In the past few years, we been dined quite a bit at The Little Gem and have been to many shows there. We've loved it every time.
Love the ambiance and friendly, cool atmosphere...
Food always wonderful, as well as service.
Thanks Little Gem!!
This was my first time in this establishment. I did not know what to expect, but it was nice. My friend Sharon Martin performed. Sharon’s performance was amazing and the band was top notched. I loved the music. Hats off to all the musicians. I had a great time.
I ate the blacken chicken pasta but only a small bit. I started feeling ill. Despite that, the food was ok. A bit over seasoned with the chicken. And the Alfredo was super thick.
They say you should always try something new at least three times. So I will not till this place out just yet.
This place is really. Hidden gem in the city. Great entertainment, good food, and a lovely staff. Parking on the street on in nearby lots makes it even better. My new favorite.
great little place to listen to live jazz and get a bite to eat. saw sharon martin there saturday night and she was tremendous.
The live entertainment was awesome. Sharon Martin and her band was a hit. Will go back for the music.
15.00 cover for the entertainment is reasonable. Menu items too pricey.
Service was impeccable and the food was delicious. It is a great place for lunch and live music also.
The first time we visited Little Gem was a disaster; despite our reservation, they gave our table to another group, we waited a half hour, then had to be split. The next year, our experience was better, but Kermit was a disappointment. This year, our reservation was spot on, seats were great, service was stellar, food and drinks were tastier than I remembered, and Kermit was dynamite. So good to witness the improvements!
Kermit Ruffins put on a fantastic show. The food was almost adequate. Didn't finish any course. Never got dessert. Wait staff completely baffled by the process of uncorking and pouring wine. Not just our server.
Service was poor. Sat a while before waited on. Waiter asked 3 of 4 sitting at table about a drink. 4th person was sitting at the table but saying hello to someone and waiter didn’t ask. Asked about Happy Hour cocktail (we arrived at 6:15 pm. Happy Hour ends at 6:30). I requested a cocktail but was told I had to order it from the bar. I observed waiters bringing alcoholic beverages to customers dining and was quite bothered that I could not be served at the table. When I asked the second waiter if I could order a cocktail for Happy Hour, she didn’t know, said she would ask. She never returned to the table with the response. A while past before the first 2 drinks came delivered by a different waiter. A while passed before the last 2 drinks came. Again, by a different waiter than the first two. The first waiter came back to the table after we waved for attention to place order for food. Three seafood platters were ordered and was cooked excessively with salt.
Food was horrible and service was slow. Too expensive for not so good food.
Went for the Kermit Ruffins CD release party and had a fantastic time, felt like a VIP, can't say enough great things about the staff, the venue, everything. Went back the next day for Saints pregame tailgating too!
We were at the Little Gem mostly just to hear Kermit Ruffins, and his show was fabulous -- except for it only running an hour instead of the promised hour-and-a-half. Food was good, but not as good as some other NOLA restaurants we've dined at -- we're a little spoiled after eating at so many good ones! Here, the blackened redfish was kind of dry and way too salty for my taste. Some reviews have touted the leek and cheddar biscuits, but they were so-so. We should have just had seconds on the cornbread they start you out with, since it is very tasty indeed.
SAFETY WARNING: The polished tile floors in the bathrooms are as slick as the ice in an ice rink that's just been surfaced by the Zamboni. If you are not EXTREMELY careful, you are likely to fall and suffer broken bones. Take little bitty baby steps and grab on to whatever you can for support. Very dangerous!
One other caveat: The tables so close together that your waitperson may actually have a difficult time getting to you! You kind of have to weave a path through the crowd and scooch your way around people.
Other than that, it was a fun time, and the show, though shortened, was awesome.
So much fun! Live music in a venue with great food and drinks. Our server Callie was superb and very attentive. Love having a table and able to order food and drinks throughout the evening. Kermit Ruffins was amazing and always love hearing Dr. Michael White. Little Gem has a great variety of acts. Check it out!
Seated 30 minutes late. Never checked in on by our served outside of each dish being served. Salad over dressed. Length of time between portions was excruciatingly long. We had forks missing from 3 of 5 settings. It felt as if they’ve never served food before. Utterly disappointing for such a cool spot with a solid vibe. Vibe got killed by the service
It was new year's eve, and busy, but the service was really poor. the hostess ignored us when we got there. we have a 10pm reservation, but didn't get even acknowledged until 10;30pm, then seated. but the food was amazing!!
Justin was awesome, his lemon drop martini was one of the best I’ve taste and consistent with each one it prepared. Very polite and friendly. Have already told other family and friends about Little Gem Saloon.
Wednesday nights are amazing! Anais St. John hosts an amazing “women crush Wednesday!” Not only do you get to hear some amazing classic New Orleans songs by Anais, but you get to hear another woman musician who usually performs some original tunes. A class act! Come support local music st Little Gem!
I loved it so much that I brought friends this time.....fabulous show by Kermit Ruffins......a true GEM!
Food selection was a bit limited but tasted great. Great service. A little loud but not nearly as bad as most restaurants.
We loved Kermit Ruffins' show. The building has been tastefully renovated, retaining the period feel. Please recruit serious international jazz in addition to the outstanding local talent! It's a great room for it!
Came for the Kermit Ruffins show. Further out location than expected. Drinks fine, just had dessert which was okay. Music amazing. Wait staff a bit challenged but amenable. Ours had a hard time figuring out who to give what check to. Would return again for a show.
Fun atmosphere! Food was excellent and music wonderful!
The Kermit Ruffins show was outstanding, if you have a chance it’s a must-see!
We were there for our first time to see Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Band on a Saturday night. His show was outstanding...good jazz music and funny jokes. Little Gem Saloon is exactly that. It's an intimate little saloon that has been there for years and it is a gem! The décor, the food and the employees are all great. The crawfish macaroni and cheese was excellent. We would definitely go back.
Pro’s ..... really excellent fried chicken and the fried beignet bread pudding was delicious ( but they forgot to serve the bourbon sauce on the side). Music provided by Little Freddie King is extra special! Con.....although the waiter was super friendly, his attention was intermittent and the service overall was slow so we had to wave for the attention of the wait staff periodically. Be sure to ask for your salad before the main course. Otherwise the salad is served at the same time. Was told that bread was coming but never showed up. And they do not serve decaf coffee!!!
Ok food, fabulous music. Good atmosphere. Fun evening.
