The Best Places to Grab a Drink in Phoenix

You’re meeting an old buddy for a sidecar. Or grabbing an after-work Manhattan with your boss. Or maybe your sister needs to bend your ear over a chilled pinot. Here’s the good news: Phoenix and its surrounding cities are bursting with great bars and cocktail lounges, suited for a range of hangouts. Here are 9 of the best for your consideration.

About the restaurant

In addition to being an all-around great place to gather with friends before a round of golf, Tonto is an education in Sonoran and Native American flavor combinations. Cocktails muddled with locally grown herbs and poured with Arizona-made tequilas and mezcals are the specialties. Part of this bar’s agenda is to preserve local heritage by sharing the stories of its property’s past. In the cooler months, there’s a pet-friendly patio.

About the restaurant

Talk about sports coverage: This family-owned neighborhood sports saloon offers nearly six dozen different wide-screen TVs, blasting various games and matches in a sprawling indoor-outdoor venue. Sixteen on-tap beers are the specialty of the house, founded in 2005 by local poker legend, Kevin O’Donnell; it’s now run by his daughter, Jennifer. She’s the brains behind the cigar-friendly terrace and the weekly team trivia night. To all that, add standout pitchers of margarita, and it’s no wonder the crowds keep coming.

A daily “mini hour” offers seven different craft cocktails and wines for seven bucks a pop.

After our dining experience last night, Weft & Warp immediately became a new favorite restaurant in Scottsdale/Phoenix. To start, valet was super attentive and let us know that he’d be leaving soon but would park our car up front and then find us in the restaurant to give us our key which was perfect as it was raining. The hostess was very nice as well and let us have our choice of seating since the dining area was starting to clear out a bit. The bar though was still very active which was nice as it added a bit of entertainment to our dinner (we love to people watch). The restaurant design and decor was functional, beautiful and inspiring to us for ideas in our own home. The main kitchen was enclosed by glass on three sides so you could watch the chef(s) work their magic. We love being able to see the culinary side of restaurants and enjoy just watching everyone at work. Our reservation was for 9:30 so we did come close to when the kitchen was closing (10) but it didn’t take us long to find some amazing choices on the menu to order and we never felt rushed. It helped that we were starving! We also ordered drinks which were reasonably priced in line with nice restaurant and being on a hotel property. Michael took care of our table and he was fantastic, funny, attentive and we enjoyed conversing with him. He also took some pictures for us and even a funny video. My wife and I love to share food which made this menu even more amazing as the portions were perfect for 2-3 people. Michael helped us select the perfect amount of food that left us full but not stuffed with only a few scraps left of each dish. We saved just enough room for two scoops of salted marshmallow and chocolate ice cream which was made in house. For dinner we ordered three items from the Mezze section and one item from the pasta section and it was all amazing, on point and fired up every tastebud! Thank you Michael, Chef and staff for making this a night and dining experience to remember!

Our family of six was vacationing in Phoenix for the week. Lou’s was recommended for the food and the sunset. Both were great. Our server Sophia was delightful.

Southeast Asian
West Phoenix
About the restaurant

According to its long list of esteemed founders, the relaxed vibe of this midtown lounge required two separate spaces on two different floors—one for dining, and one for the tranquil enjoyment of handcrafted cocktails and natural wine. Drinks are inspired by Southeast Asia, and many are fruit- and citrus-based while others are flavored with botanical shrubs and tangy vinegars. If you’re stumped on what to order, consult the waitstaff—they’re more than happy to recommend specialty concoctions, based on what you usually sip.

About the restaurant

Nestled into the shadows of Sunnyslope Mountain in uptown Phoenix, this popular cantina has earned a reputation as the local go-to haunt for tequila and mezcal-centric cocktails. Ladera, which means “hillside” in Spanish, specializes in agave-flavored drinks, such as The Slope, a wild combination of mezcal, grapefruit bitters and fresh lime juice infused with serrano peppers. The casual south-of-the-border ambience—with piped-in Tejano music—lets guests pretend they’re in Tijuana.

Love this location! Came here because I wanted to simply try a different location of The Vig and this one emerges as a top spot! The parking situation is a little weird, but overall, this is a wonderful addition to The Vig network. The patio is quaint and intimate. A little different from some of the locations because you stumble upon it as you enter. The interior is smaller than others, but has a cozy, romantic feel. It almost feels like you are going into a log cabin at a ski resort or something. I sat at the bar and I'm glad that I did. Great vibe with stellar service. They have Fiji sparkling water (who else loves sparkling water?!) which perfectly chilled. I kid you not, but the Shishito peppers were served better here. Spicy as fire, crisp, and perfectly seasoned. I nearly ate the entire (very large!) portion. I also ordered the Wagyu cheeseburger. Wow, this was succulent. I'd seen someone order one of these and I suspected they were as good as they looked, and they exceeded expectations. I opted for the sweet potato fries which were the perfect accompaniment. Although simple, this was one of the best meals I've had at any Vig location. The kitchen is killing it! An extraordinary experience that you must try.

About the restaurant

Dartboards, pool tables, and giant TVs, tuned to campy old movies and football games, are the distinguishing features at this popular lounge, just south of Arizona State University. One-of-a-kind craft beers and cocktails mixed with juices, sodas, and fusions made from scratch in-house are served on a patio canopied by an ancient shade tree. Here, a well-stocked grab-and-go cooler bursts with beers, packaged cocktails, and soft drinks.

About the restaurant

Named for its owners’ twin passions—Rottweilers and wine—this friendly, open-air lounge’s slogan is “Make America Grape Again.” Its agenda includes education, so servers are trained to describe and discuss every one of the 90 different grape varietals on the menu. There are also monthly tasting events and a wine club designed for expanding one’s vino knowledge. Specials include a 12-buck-a bottle Champagne deal on Sundays and all-day happy hours on Thursdays.

From the moment I made the reservation, I knew I was going to like this place. Keith was very attentive, texting me to let me know that they were going to be crowded, as they had a large group there that evening. Then, directions on where to park. Very attentive. We were welcomed warmly by Patty as soon as we stepped through the door. The place is much smaller than I anticipated but the wine list, the delicious pizza, and Brandon, the bartender more than made up for the fact that our party of 3 were seated at the bar. Keith made sure that he came out and spoke with me before our evening ended. I really appreciated that. It’s been awhile since I’ve been at a place that made you feel that your presence was important to them. All in all, a delightful place that I will return to soon!
