Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducasse.”

We enjoyed the food. Be prepared to spend a little money. But for the type of dining, it was to be expected. Will be back.

We visited this old favorite for lunch after a three year hiatus. Pleased to report that the food’s as good as ever and well worth the hour drive down from Richmond.

Worth the trip, even from Montpelier, VA! When some friends and I want a REALLY special lunch together, this is the place I would choose. Richmond also has an excellent French restaurant--but it isn't open for lunch! The waiter was also extremely helpful when I explained my dietary requirements and both my friend and I had excellent meals that were a very special treat to each of us. Had I been younger, I would have had some wine, but at my age, just the drive was about as much as I could handle without adding anything to the mix. I try to get to Le Yaca 2 or 3 times a year. They make you feel like they really care about you and want to be sure you have food and service that you will remember enthusiastically. You don't go there because you don't feel like cooking---you PLAN to go there, look forward to it from the time you have a reservation, and look backto it for the rest of your life.

We visit Kings Arms every time we visit Williamsburg, and that has been 20-25 times over the years, and we always enjoy dinner there. Our server, Sheila, was fantastic!!! We ordered the prime rib dinner, and I deducted one star because my meat was not great. Sheila and I talked about the amount of doneness I wanted, and I ordered medium well. I should have ordered medium (as my husband did). My meat was more like a steak than a prime rib. It wasn't tender. Everything else was terrific. Did I mention that Sheila was wonderful??? :) I had snow eggs for dessert........yummy!!!!
