La Mer at Halekulani Ratings and Reviews
Five star: Wonderful food and outstanding service from Laurence made a special occasion even more special! Expensive yes, but absolutely worth it for a special celebration. Be sure to go early to have cocktails at L’Aperitif, each paired with its own amuse bouche.
The setting was beautiful, overlooking ocean and Diamond Head. Hawaiian trio was playing down below- close enough to hear well but far enough to allow quiet conversation.
Service was attentive- but slower than it needed to be. Would have appreciated a better pace to get us started.
Wine list was outstanding and prices marked up to a lesser degree than some comparable restaurants.
Most disappointing was the portion size. We decided to forego the 7-course tasting menu, and just get appetizer and entree. My Appetizer (seared foie gras) was spectacular. But the portion size of my $60 duck entree seemed smaller than the foie gras!
This is my second visit to this restaurant; I took my husband there last year for his birthday as well. The staff was very attentive, called us both by name. One man said he remembered us from last year and that he thought we might even be sitting at the same table. My husband loves their wine list and the fact that he can get high-end wines by the glass. It was a wonderfully romantic evening with good food!
OUTSTANDING service, knowledgeable menu options with details of ingredients and authentic French cuisine.
From the Hostesses to the servers and bus people, they combined with the ambience created with the backdrop of a world class Sunset that only an unobstructed waterside Waikiki view can offer... a dinning experience unequaled.
Men, step it up and make it special for your special-lady!
Poor service. Arrogant wait staff , weak cocktails and extremely small portions in relation to price point. We are experienced gourmets. Never have we ever had wait staff tell us that they could not “release “ bread until orders were placed. Not a good experience and would not highly recommend
Surprised that the beef tartare was premade. My husband is allergic to onions and they couldn’t do a beef tartare because it already had onions in it. Setting is lovely. Food is good. I didn’t enjoy my veal and didn’t eat it. They took it off my bill. I did not ask them to do that. I even told them no. But, they insisted. Very nice. Soufflé was very good. I think our waiter needed more training. When asked about the items on the menu it just read what the menu said. Noth8ng more.
I reserved a table to celebrate my engagement that happened earlier that day.
The staff were perfect, able to explain dishes well and give suggestions. They were attentive and make the guests feel like royalty.
The food was exquisite, though expect fine dining size portions. My suggestion is to sample their incredible breads between courses and you will find yourself completely full rather quickly. My fiancee couldn't finish her third course but was super pleased with her meal. Expect to spend over 200$ a person for a proper 3 course meal but it is worth it for special events. I passed on the tasting menu but the couple next to us did order it and it looked wonderful as well.
Speaking of special events, after the staff learned of our special event they surprised us with a wonderful desert and chocolate sampler as well as a take home gift from the chef.
Fabulous setting on the ocean. Quiet and intimate . Excellent service , had 3 waiters, wine glass always filled, excellent food. Fresh flowers on tables . Beautiful decor - even for this designer . All the ladies left with a rose and everyone leaves with a little cute box with desserts inside . Loved it!
La Mer never fails in the service category. My friends & I have celebrated the holidays here 16 of the the last 17 years & we leave every year in awe with the service the staff provides. Keani is a nice addition to the management staff. Although our favorite waiter (Alex) was off , Kent & Scott--old timers who don't miss a beat, were just as great. It's always nice for the staff who stops by to offer holiday cheers because they know we are return patrons.
Having a pre-dinner drink at L'Aperitif is a must. Food was great and portions were generous.
To the La Mer staff--THANK YOU!! We will be back next year.
When I made a reservation at LeMer, I was excited because it was a supposed five star restaurant.
We had a lovely cocktail to start the night at the bar with Henry the best bartender in Hawaii!!
However, we were totally underwhelmed with the remainder of the evening.
The first thing that the waiter, a pleasant man, told us was that the chef was from Tour D’Argent in Paris. This really peaked our interest since we have been there on numerous occasions.
They had a fixed menu as well as a ala carte menu. We opted for the later. We ordered a beautiful red wine from France, which the sommelier did not offer to decant.
The appetizers were quite tasty..however the entrees which were breast of duck and rack of lamb fell far below a standard that a five star restaurant should serve.
The desert was excellent, so at least we left with our taste buds finally being satisfied.
I would not recommend this overpriced restaurant.
Maybe, the chef had an off night, but that doesn’t happen at a quality restaurant.
Its tough to write this but my experience at La mer was frustrating. It was acsoecial occasion and, to be fair, the location is spectacular. The view of Diamond head and the sea is unmatched. The service was professional, with experienced staff diligently catering to your needs. The problem is it is way toi exoensive for what they deliver. They offer a tasting menu at $205, if you want the wine pauring , its another $95. They mention the portions are smaller in the tasting menu as it is meant ti be a 5 course meal. We decided on 3 courses but the portions were really small. The food is good and served in an original fashion but not spectacular (except for the desserts). With wine, the checks runs twice what you would pay at Allan Wong’s ( I acknowledge there is a premium for the view but double?).
In short, if you can arrange for drinks only ir money is no object, or it is part of a package then I recommend it. If not, I would pass.
Not worth our time and money! Much has been said and seen for French fine dining elsewhere, and this one proves to be more expensive than the value provided through food, ambiance and service. I have dined at other moderately expensive French restaurants and found that there are indeed better options out there than this place. Although the service here was fine, it felt that our waiter (possibly, Tony) was a little biased if we could afford the food and wine, and in a hurry to clear the table. Btw, we were dressed for the occasion. At comparatively other expensive restaurants, the waiters are always warm and non-judgmental. An another factor was the portion size. We have dined at other French fine dining places, but found that the portion sizes here were far too less (lamb & duck entrées, etc.). Food quality was good, as it should be. Ambiance was fine with no music. We are not coming back though. You’ll find that 99% of the visitors at this restaurant are those who are staying in the hotel.
