We arrived at the restaurant at the appointed time, and found the doors locked. There was no explanation on the door, and our calls to the restaurant yielded only a busy signal. We still haven't got a call from them or anything by way of apology. It's like we did not have reservation, at all.
No harm, no foul... but no future visits to this place, either.

La Cave: Restaurant has a '60's vibe. Downstairs, low lighting, seats have red 'leather' backing. The grill is near the entry and peaks your interest. Hot 'cheese toast ' was presented, a pleasant surprise. I ordered a 10 oz fillet, medium rare, which arrived as ordered, salad & starch included. Drinks are generous and the wines by the glass or bottle are reasonable by restaurant standards. This is a nice place for dinner and a rendezvous... I'll leave the rest to you.
A classic old style steak house that does not disappoint. A festive environment and a pretty good value all in all. Everything was tasty. It is on the 'go back to' list for sure.
Great service, and delicious food! We’ll definitely be back.
My wife's food was good, but my prime rib was terrible. Worst that I have had in more than 30 years. It was worse than horse meat & must have had 0000000 marble texture........surely was NOT PRIME.
Received excellent service. Mushrooms and cheese bread were amazing. My husband enjoyed his steak but my king crab legs were very underwhelming and the portion was small. It would be fun for drinks and appetizers but I will most likely never return for dinner. The price was outrageous. Double what we normally pay at our usual spot for twice the food and better ambiance.
First time here, was a excellent experience. Our waitress (Laura) was above excellent highly recommended and will be back again for sure.
I was there 20 years ago so it has changed a little.
Bianca was incredible ! We had a reservation and were seated right away . Bianca made sure to break down the menu and items since it was our first time. I can happily say our 6 year anniversary was memorable .❤️
LaCave is a wonderful place. The ambiance is very cool, very retro, like stepping back in time. The food is excellent and the service was good although our server did make us feel a little rushed.
We felt rushed by server. Third time it’s happened.
Very average experience. The steak was not great quality, one of our party ordered a rare NY strip, it was served medium and sent back but the kitchen insisted it was rare. It wasn’t. At attempt number three he got his rare steak. But no real apology. The rest of the food was likewise average. Service overall was no more than mediocre and the noise levels high, we had difficulty conversing. Overall very disappointing.
Neat place to dine. The food is excellent, the drinks are fabulous, wait staf attentive without being annoying. We loved it!
Le Cave is an absolutely great experience!!!
Always consistent. Fab food, ambience, and, service.
One of our favorite spots!
Usually one of our favorite places to dine. If you eat in the front room of the restaurant, which we have always done in the past the ambience and noise level are great, We requested a booth and probably because we made our reservations the afternoon of the day before we dined, we were seated in the back room at a table in the middle fo the room that abutted another table. The food was very good as usual; however;, however, it was hard to enjoy it or talk with the high noise level and lack of privacy. I am worried that we may not be able to get one member of the group to return to the restaurant.
Birthday dinner was amazing! As always excellent food excellent drinks great atmosphere my favorite restaurant
We have never felt taken in by La Cave on special occasions, but this was an exception. Prices were not listed on the menu, but if they were, we would have left. The potato and bread were dry and the steak was not up to par. I can see raising prices somewhat on a holiday, but this was truly a rip-off. It is terrible La Cave took advantage of its long-time customers to make a buck on New Years'. A definite long-term absence is in order for us.
Great steak, mediocre salad and potatoes. Ok desert. Service was not at the same level as the steak.
Exceptional as always. Try the surf and turf!
We started coming to La Cave 25 years ago. In recent years, in my opinion, the food isn't quite up to the quality it used to be, especially the cheese bread. My filet was a little stringey and my husband said his New York was tough. Over all we enjoyed our dinner with friends.
La Cave is a great place for dinner and the food is always fabulous. We’ve been going there since the 60’s and the quality has always been very high.
First time there. Outstanding food although limited menu.
Every thing was very good except sitting close to the bar, the noise prevented any conversations
Best restaurant in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa and has been since 1962. Fabulous meat and martinis. Always great ambiance and service. Tradition of excellence that can't be beat.
La cave never disappoints. It is consistently excellent.
The ambience and service was great. Our filet was great, but the ribeye was sinewy. We get better ribeyes, free from excess tendons, from other steak places.
Even though I have lived in the Newport area all my life, I had never been to La Cave. The interior was very much like an old fashion chop house, which I loved. The room was cozy and comfy. We didn't get a menu which is how the restaurant works. Instead, the wait person was very nice and explained the choices on a trolley cart. While the prices are on the higher side, the food and drinks were very good. We would go again.
Though hard to image, we've been coming to this restaurant since the 60's. What we love is that it is the same delicious food, it's a romantic sort of steak/fish place with red booths, a friendly & good bar, great wait staff and when we make reservations we anxiously anticipate their famous cheese break, twice baked (or regular baked) potatoes and their quality steaks and seafood grilled to perfection. We love that it's still here and that others love it as much as we do. Eat late and stay for the live music Friday and Saturday. We enjoyed Saturday night's Blues band - great musicians!
The food is a constant 4-stars; my personal favorite being the smaller 8oz Filet. Very flavorful and good quality.
It was perfect
We really enjoyed our dining experience! The service and the food was outstanding and I think the atmosphere is romantic!
The only disappointment was that they gave me the wrong steak and even though I asked 2 different people they didn’t fix the error. I ordered a 10 ounce filet (cooked medium) while my friend ordered a 6 ounce (medium rare) and she got my steak. I shouldn’t have had to make a big deal of it. Sadly, I didn’t make a big deal of it so I didn’t get the steak that I ordered. I felt cheated. It should have been corrected when I brought it to the servers attention.
Old school vibe with great service, food and drinks. Rare and grand experience!
Surf and turf! Music . Again 5 star, love the sexy booths !
This place is so old-school, we just love it. I adore their king crab legs! My husband always wants to do the surf-and-turf, but I'd be happy with a big old plate of legs. If you haven't been, you'll love their old-fashioned "menu," which is just a big rolling cart with all of the different cuts of meat and fish under glass - they show it to you via flashlight! Been coming here since the 80s and the place has not changed a bit. Skip the "Elvis" impersonator show - we were not impressed by the sound of things. But if you want a good steakhouse at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with La Cave!
Seated promptly, table clean, greeted promptly, great service and food.
When we have a special occasion to celebrate, we always choose La Cave. The food, cocktails, atmosphere and the amazing service is always outstanding!
Old school steak and seafood, loaded bar. Expect Dean Martin to roll in any minute. Staff is excellent, food is good.
