I have had traditionally wonderful experiences at Kona Grill, however these past two have been uncharacteristically poor. I brought my friend to celebrate her end of deployment and we had anything but a lovely night. Our server was kind but overwhelmed with a party so we were unable to receive decent service. Some of our food and beverages were forgotten because they were so overwhelmed. The food however, was wonderful as always. The following day I placed a to-go order for my friend because she enjoyed the food so much. When I arrived I was told there was a miscommunication and my order was not placed. When I finally got the order and gave it to my friend we discovered I received a salad with no dressing and the incorrect roll. When attempting to call to see what could be done, I was placed on hold for almost 15 minutes and then disconnected. Overall I am very disappointed.
Usually we have a terrific experience at Kona; however, this past Saturday, we were not happy with the service. While we were late for our reservation, I understand the short wait to get a table, that was on us. When we got the table, we waited 30 minutes for someone to come by and give us water. A little later, a server came by and took out order. Sixty minutes later, we had not seen the server again, except when they dropped off one napkin and a set of chop sticks, for a party of three. People that were seated after us had eaten and paid. At this point, with no prospect of getting food, we moved on to another restaurant.
There were SO many knats flying around our table it was hard to enjoy the meal. This happened the last time I was there too and thought I’d give it another shot and was disappointed.
Kona Grill is one of the best places in Kansas City for lunch. The food is outstanding.
One of my favorite spots in Kansas City for sushi!
Bit slow to get started but after our server arrived the meal was very nice. Cocktails very well balanced and the seasonal menu was backed with good options.
Food was ok. My Waiter recommended the Picasso, according to the sushi chef. Picasso, tasted fishie.
Waiter, Eric did a fine job. The steam dumplings were good the California type sushi roll with cream cheese was good. Price point could be better for what you receive.
Group of 5 fir birthday dinner. Food was great but our host, Tavita, was excellent! I was reluctant to order lemon pasta but did in his recommendation and it was fantastic!
We had a great night and will be back.
Service was poor, we think our server may have been new. It was expensive, it had $$ but probably should have had $$$ on its listing. Loud, a DJ was playing as if he was in a dance club. Food: sushi, acceptable, we’ve had much better for less money; beer was cold; starter and sides were OK.
Bartender was great!
Food was subpar. Too much salt. Too much vinegar. Fish was not fresh.
Food and drinks were delicious. Service was great!
Our server was fun to talk to during our meal, had a lot of good recommendations as well.
Steak was bland. Had to search for the waitress everytime we needed refills. Mashed potatoes were cold and hard. Overall I was not very impressed.
My experience was honestly terrible. I called at 10:30 asking if my reservation was still good since they closed at 11. The person on the phone said no worries come on by. I get there and the server was very rude. She said she never talked to me at all. The manager came over and was quite rude as well. Idk why they would tell me to come if i was going to be treated so poorly.
Our server (from Hawaii, can't remember his name) was outstanding! Please share with the restaurant that he made our meal so enjoyable!
Really liked the food. We reserved outdoor seating on Open Table. However when we got to the restaurant they told us outdoor seating is first come first served.
Meal was great. Would highly suggest the butter cake, it’s fantastic and not too heavy.
Way overpriced for the food served. They also no longer offer their amazing pulled pork sliders.
Host was great nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Great time for a date night.
Lunch service was very slow and quite pricey for a power lunch special.
Very efficient wait staff, quick service, varied drink menu, nice ambience
The food was great. Tried sushi for the first there and it was amazing
At first the service was not the best. I was left sitting at my table for 10 minutes. I asked the hostess if the area i was sat in had waiter service and that's when my waiter came by apologizing that he got his area confused. Ok... I'll let it go.
Then my order came quickly. It was very good and drinks were great. He didn't make any suggestions which I might have been open to.... so lost sales there. The place wasn't busy as in the past so I feel like the service could have been better. The opportunity to be amazing to get us to come back was not taken.
I still tipped 20% but only because the waiter might have been having an off day.
Our server was great , food came quick. Good service
Happy Hour is worthy
Service always top notch
I love Kona..it is one of my fav places to dine! We had great service last night (which is rare to find these days). Why the lower rating!? Increased prices ($4 for tea) and decreased portions (the avacado rolls were like a child's portion).
Party of 2 Seated - 15+ min not recognized. Got up went to kitchen to get own water and tea.
They then realized something must be wrong as I was pouring my water in the side station. Manager Matt seemed rattled that I would seek to self serve. I told him that it had been 15 min since seated. We watched a table of 10-12 seat after us and they had waters and cocktails a duce was seated beverage and app order taken. A 4 top seated and waters given. I might not have been as irritated had my wife not chosen this for her birthday.
The server apologized, and started to again and I asked did she even knew she had been seated. If you don't know your seated you cannot provide service so I did not feel it was her fault at all. She was very sweet.
Food was ok, restaurant loud, and value for the experience just ok.
Recovery just ok.
Most likely will not go back for dinner.....perhaps try for lunch.
Overall a very good dinner. I had the sea bass, which was exceptional. My wife had the filet mignon, which was good, not great. The side dish with her steak was Brussel sprouts, which she usually loves, but these weren't cooked enough, so they were not very tender. The sushi as an appetizer was excellent. My daughter and her boyfriend dined with us and said their meals were very good as well.
The food quality and freshness has continued to decline for the last several visits. This last visit will be our last. This really makes us sad as this was our favorite date night destination. Not sure that the new ownership has the same commitment to quality as the previous.
The food was amazing. I had the spicy lobster avocado toast. They had a nice brunch menu. The mimosas were very good. The service was great. We plan to go back.
The server was very sweet. You could tell she was very busy but she was very pleasant to us the whole time. I commend her for that idk how they do it.
Great service and friendly staff, even better food!
It was lovely! Took a bit of time to get our food, but it was worth it.
Bartender and one waiter were used to cover the entire bar area and outdoor seating. Clearly understaffed. Waited at least 5 minutes to be acknowledged and another few minutes before drink order was taken. Waitress took our uncomplicated food order w/o writing anything down and as a result shared salad not split, sushi included ingredient we ordered without and received my salad w/o chicken, which it comes with per the menu. Manager had sushi and salad remade. Sushi came out fine. Salad delivered was the wrong salad altogether.
I appreciate the manager comped the sushi and salad but root of the problem needs addressed.
Service was slow, food was adequate and I will never go back.Thank You
Also, the place was very dirty
Surf and turf was delicious for dinner and enough leftovers for a full lunch the next day.
Floors were greasy like they used the kitchen mop on the guest floor. The booths look like they took them from a Furr’s cafeteria when they shut down 20 years ago. Our frozen margarita flight came out liquid because it sat on the bar for 10 minutes before making its way to the table.
The food was non-descript. Not horrible, but nothing amazing.
If you’d like Plaza prices for basic sushi, Kona Grill is the place for you.
We went to celebrate a birthday and had a reservation and they sat us and then forgot about us, apparently there was no server assigned to our station. Took us an hour and a half to get our food and it was OK. I probably wouldn’t go back.
