We arrived on time but were told “We don’t reserve tables; you’ll be out on a wait list in order.” Then how are they part of Open Table?? And I’ve never been told that in all these years. We were told to expect a 10-15 minute wait and it was no more than 10...but I’m disappointed with the “wait list” policy.
I had requested a booth but we were given a table...then she DID ask about an open booth that was nearby and reseated us. It is always very loud in the the restaurant and we find visiting difficult at a table; it’s slightly better at a booth.
The restaurant was miserably hot inside. We were quite uncomfortable. It WAS very hot out and I’m guessing they had an issue with the HVAC.
Our appetizer took much longer to arrive than normal and we weren’t finished when our food came out. The food was delicious as usual.
We were celebrating two birthdays and I’d indicated that on the reservation. We used to get a dessert with that. There was no acknowledgment. We were so hot that we were ready to leave anyway and didn’t ask.
Overall, we occasionally travel 6 hours to visit family in KC and traditionally eat at Kona on the last night. The food was very good. The overall experience was poor this time.
The two of us were seated at a booth and provided one menu which is awkward to keep passing back-and-forth. It took the server roughly 10 minutes to acknowledge we were even there. We had to request soy sauce, napkins, and chopsticks. Not fun for an anniversary dinner.
Tried to reserve 11am but said no tables so took 10:30. What a joke! The place was completely empty except for one table. At 11, about 3 people came in. When we left at 12:30 (because it literally took 2 hours to get through the service) there were about 5 tables full. Table was filthy and covered with sticky stuff. Did not get water. Had to ask for brunch menus. Waitress was very nice and friendly but never came to check on us. I almost had to go to bar to order a second mimosa. Super glad I didn’t waste the money on bottomless as i never would have gotten any! Food was good. Ordered Mac nut French toast. Had no Mac nuts on it. No butter. Didn’t realize it until almost done. Prices were HIGH. Place was filthy!! Booth was shredded and shabby. Pitch black. For brunch I was hoping for a vibrant atmosphere but this was like a funeral home. Carpet is filthy decor is sane as it was 15 years ago. Place really went down hill. Very sad.
We made a reservation for 5 people (adults and teenagers) and were squeezed into a four person booth. The backs of the seats were wobbly so whenever a guest would join a table on either side, we were jostled in our seats. It was uncomfortably warm where we were seated (very hot outdoors), but that could also be slightly attributed to how close we were in our seats. It took a long time for a server to come to us initially and he seemed to be a bit frazzled (either he was in training or he was training someone). It was also really loud.
All that aside, food was delicious, but being out of towners, I think we’d look for another option the next time we are in KC.
Unfortunately, we had our first poor experience at Kona.
Not the best experience at Kona this time. Through the reservation I had requested a dining room table because this was a business dinner, we I checked in the only table they had was a high top for five in the bar between the front door and the patio door that we had to sit at. It was over 90 degrees outside so with the doors constantly opening it was uncomfortable at this table. Being the bar area this was really loud also, felt like we were in a club with the music. The food runners kept asking if food was ours, it was clear that this was not a normal table for food. In my line of work I do many business dinners, sadly with this experience I won’t be having one at Kona again.
We have visited multiple times and this was a very disappointing experience that won’t bring us back!
Sarah was just amazing. I don't think she knew we were there at first but no fault of her own
I was disapointed to find out when we arrived that theyare no longer doing the all-day Sunday happy hour :(. I was still hungry after our meal and it was expensive to take the whole family out to eat without the Happy Hour deal that we usually go in for.
Sander was the best server and very accommodating. Food, as always, was great.
Fast service! Great hospitality.
First time time their. Food was really good. Server was a little slow.
Excellent food. Very satisfied. Go at happy hour to save some bucks though....
Horrible food this time and terribly over priced. Will not return.
Always a great time. Staff is always attentive.
My daughter had hair in her slider manager was aware n brung out another dish, but I always go often, never happened before, we generally seat ourselves no reservations
Our waiter was phenomenal. The restaurant needs some updating, but the sushi and cocktails were great!
We used to love dining at Kona but the recent quality of service was the worst I’ve seen from any restaurant on the plaza. The server did not bring a chiller for the bottle of wine we ordered (despite asking). The server also failed to bring the salad we ordered, 2 additional rounds of drinks we ordered, or any water when our glasses remained empty for 10-15 minutes.
Great place and food. I’ve been going there for the past 14 years !
The food was amazing! Such a great variety of food.. can't wait to go back! Great for date night or family meal
I come here all the time and it's amazing Everytime. Love it for birthdays and celebrating!!
The waitress told us it was no more reverse Happy Hour even tho we booked for a happy hour and reverse Happy Hour was plastered all over the internet. Then found out 4 days later my Cousin went.. for REVERSE HAPPY HOUR.. So that part sucked and still confused about reverse Happy Hour.
So, every bit of the food was excellent. I could not begin to tell you how fabulous the Korean 5-spice ribs were. I would say overall, the pricing was less than I expected, which is good, but I would still relegate this to the once every 6 month type of occassion. I would say it's well worth the money however.
Our waitress was so kind. We made last minute reservations and got in super quick. The food was great! Will definitely visit again!
We have eaten here numerous times and love their food but this time the service and cleanliness of the bathrooms was very disappointing. There were not many tables full, tried to put 5 adults into 1 booth. Had to ask to move to a table so we had elbow room, waiting on service forever then made the mistake of going into the bathroom that was dirty with a wet floor from a pipe leaking from the sink.
I didn't even see a front of house manager to talk to. The host sat us, 15 minutes goes by and my partner checks on the host to find our server, now 30 minutes later we get served at long last but then our server forgets to put in our order and we go another 15 minutes without drinks. My goodness, 45 minutes to get a drink - we went there for happy hour, I counted at least 6 servers, theres no reason we shouldn't have gotten service. Terrible service.
My boyfriend and I went out to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. We went to KC for the week and decided to try Kona Grill. The menu and pictures looked very appealing so we decided to give it a shot. We made a reservation and on the reservation we put we were celebrating our anniversary and it gave us the option of table preference we chose a table and not a high top table. Upon arrival we checked in and they immediately sat us at a high top table. Sat for almost 20 minutes before a server came to greet us. When or server greeted us he just said what do you want to drink and walked away. We were ready to order drinks and he just sat our waters down and walked away. My boyfriend and I are both servers we understand if a server is busy with another table or doing something. Waiter finally came back over to get our appetizer order then never came back. A guy dropped our appetizers off and our server walked past us about 6 times before he even came back to check on us or ask us if we were ready to order which we were. He was not busy but just not attentive at all to us. He was very unfriendly and acted like he didn’t care at all to be there. We decided to go eat somewhere else we paid our tab and left
Server kept disappearing, half the food came out 20 minutes before the rest, put my card to pay and the server never came so I had to bring it to the front
Food is just not very good. Sushi is over spiced. The place was not very clean. Will not return
It was good for what they could provide. The food was good. Menu could use some tweaking on the French toast. Waiters/Hostess should know the food to be able to answer customers questions. They were short staff and there was a slow service due to this
Great place the waitress was just busy overall love it there
Made a reservation with a booth request. Checked in 5 minutes early and they tried to put
Maybe it’s all new staff, because things are beginning to open up, but last night at Kona was kind of disappointing. We had reservations at 6:00 p.m. We walked in and no one else was waiting. The very bored hostess said it would be about 10 minutes before our table would be ready, because they were waiting for people to leave. We said ok. Then we looked toward the bar area and there was a 2 top, empty and clean. We asked if we could sit at that table in the bar. She looked like she’d never been asked that question before. She glanced over at a table 2 people had just left and said they needed to clean it off first. Ok...we waited. Someone casually went over to the table about 5 minutes later and cleaned it off. We waited a couple of minutes and she said she would seat us. She put as at the table that had been empty the whole time! My husband and I started laughing. She looked at us confused. We perused the menu. The server came over and asked if we needed more time. We said we were ready to order some drinks. We waited maybe 5 minutes for the drinks as we overheard one bartender say to another “don’t cry, it will be ok” 😬. We finished our drinks before the server ever came back. Finally ordered food and 4 more drinks (2 a piece knowing how long it was taking for literally everything). Then the music got extremely loud. It was my birthday (which I put on the reservation), but they didn’t mention it. Whatever. So overall, it was just extremely slow service, with ho-hum food, that was turning into a night club by the time we left. I was looking for a replacement sushi restaurant now that Nara closed, but this won’t be it.
Restaurant was extremely noisy with very loud music and crowd noise.
We ordered appetizers, sushi and hot dishes and they were all brought to our table at the same time rather than spreading them out.
Don’t know if we showed up during a shift change or something but after being seated for about 15 minutes with no service, we had to ask someone if a server would be coming to our table. It then took another 15 or so minutes to get our drinks. Other than that things were fine.
Service was okay, food was great.
The vibe of this place was so cool! Would love to back when I am here!!
Our server was so polite and attentive, and the food was phenomenal. Definitely will be back.
Terrible service. Have been multiple times but the service at 6 pm on a Thursday was awful
Jensea was wonderful and took great care of us!
