I ate there with my 13 year old grandaughter before seeing FLY. I appreciated that our 6:30 dinner time was workable with the 7:30 curtain time. Service was attentive , food delicious and its a cool place!
Great service, good food. Great place prior to a show!
Good food, great service, and reasonably quiet so that our table of 6 could all hear the conversation. Great pre-theater spot for when La Jolla Playhouse reopens.
The noise level was so high it made the meal not enjoyable
Both of our dishes were incredibly delicious. Our drinks were perfect and dessert was yummy. Jeremy was our waiter and was wonderful and attentive. It was a busy night in the restaurant so nothing really to do about the noise level.
Great place for convenient dinner before La Jolla Playhouse performance. Service was top notch level. Food was extremely flavorful.
We will go again! It’s perfect for dinner before a play at the La Jolla Playhouse!
Our waitress was a little slow, but we made it in time to pick up our tickets at Will Call, and into our seats on time.
One of our guests complained that we had to pay $3 for bread.
The beet salad was terrific, clam chowder was very tasty and the spicy shrimp appetizer was very good. One person in our party ordered the heirloom tomato salad, that looked amazing, and there was nothing left on her plate!
If you live near James Place or going to La Jolla Playhouse, this is a great place to dine. Our food was very good. Jeremy was a great waiter.
Dinner before FLY was great!!!!
great food and great place before the play
would definitely recommend it
We had a lovely evening ~ I would recommend. A perfect place to go before you hit La Jolla Playhouse.
If going to the La Jolla Playhouse and you're looking for a good restaurant, this is not the place. Factor in extra time and plan on going someplace in the village. While it is conveniently located next to theater, the food quality (we had sushi) was much more on par with campus food (the restaurant is on UCSD's campus). Perhaps some of their other types of fare are better. They do have a nice interior and the drinks are decent.
Great place for pre-play dinner at the La Jolla Playhouse!
Recommend this restaurant if you are attending a performance at the Playhouse.
Our waiter was great! The person that checked us in made it a bit awkward because he couldnt find our reservation that we booked on open table. So he went back and fourth with me stating he didn't see a reservation under my name. Very awkward especially since he had plenty of empty tables. I had to look my reservations up on line and show him then he gave us a table.
Awesome service and great food. Love coming here before a show!
We go to James Place before the theatre like everyone else who is there. It is always a good place to have dinner, but this time it was really exceptionally good. All of our dinner, two appetizers and two entrees were excellent. One of the best meals we have had in San Diego for a long time.
It’s always a pleasure to dine at James’ Place and especially before our play at La Jolla Playhouse! The cuisine is excellent and the ambience is energetic and fun! I brought a friend who had not dined here before and she liked her lobster dinner very much.
Great place for dinner before a play. Love their sushi and my margarita(s) was(ere) great! :-)
Had dinner before show at LJPH on Sunday evening. Food was delicious and service was excellent. We celebrated a friend's birthday and she was brought a dessert at the end of the meal, which was a nice touch. We always enjoy eating at James' place.
Perfect for pre- or post- theatre.
Portions for the prices are very small, I had the braised beef short ribs with garlic mashed potatoes with baby peeled carrots and French beans, veggies were fine, mashed potatoes tasted like regular mashed potatoes and the beef was very small only 3 2 inch pieces and they were very sweet and was in much need of salt and more seasoning, very disappointed
The food is mediocre at best. The only thing they have going for them is convenience if you are going to a play.
Food was excellent but a bit over priced for the portion size.
Theater-goers can load up a plate or snack and enjoy a variety in the menu. Everything was tasty.
Attentive service. Food was average. Pricey for what we received - seared scallops with risotto. Not much taste to the scallops. The lemon sushi roll was good. The server was aware that we were going to the La Jolla Playhouse so she geared the timing of the service, which was appreciated.
Great before theater restaurant! Always love the sushi!
Fantastic cocktails, food and service! Our server, John was so friendly and helpful that we instantly knew we were in for a great dining experience!
The wonderful meal at a venue so close to the theater, followed by a great play, made for a fun and memorable evening!
Nice place to dine before the show. The stuffed mushrooms were scrumptious. I found the lobster and shrimp with truffle fried rice to be very salty, however. The wine recommended by the server was very good, and service was good as well.
We both enjoyed the Chicken Caesar Salad before seeing our play - tasted great! Service was very good
The only reason to eat here is the proximity to the La Jolla Playhouse. Food is overpriced and just average. Selections for gluten-free are few. Our server was good, helpful. But so expensive! Our creme brulee was stone cold, and had no hard sugar crust, a real disapointment. Entrees were just ok.
This is the perfect place for a nice dinner before theater at the La Jolla Playhouse.
The draw is covenience to the Playhouse and one dish- crunchy Lobster/Shrimp starter.
Wine list is marginal, with excuses about its limitations that management is not open to input, and re cost. I know of many wines that are much better at even lower cost.
Also excuses why they can't serve expresso - all weak.
Without the Playhouse Idoubt the restaurant could compete and survive.
Out of every wine in their list except for the house wine.
A must if you're going to the La Jolla Playhouse; it could not be more convenient. We had an excellent meal; both sushi and other menu options were good.
Terrible wine list!!
Overpriced, undercooked, underserved - We were one of first tables. Ordered drinks and then other tables came in and I noticed they were served drinks first. Saw mine sitting up at bar for a long time. Eventually went and got them and served myself. A filet mignon was ordered medium and came out rare to raw. Also, scallops and shrimp dish was ordered and scallops undercooked. ambiance was more like the college cafeteria and bathrooms outside were definitely like a college campus bathrooms at a public park.
Much better places to dine in San Diego.
WE ALWAYS TRUST THEM TO HAVE SOME VERY GOOD SUSHI BEOFRE OUR SHOW AT THE PLAYHOUSE AND WE ARE NOT DISAPPOINTED! THANK YOU
Very good, very convenient!
Convenient and very pleasant before seeing a play. Thank you for being so accommodating.
