Perfect dinner before the play. Chilled wine glasses are lovely. And the color changing bar is fun.

Very convenient to the Playhouse. Previous visit was fair with slow service. This time service was most attentive due to half empty. However the food was mediocre at best. Never seen chunks of Parmesan on calamari. When finished plate was covered in breading. Sea bass was tiny and tasteless. Don’t plan on returning.

We used to love James’ Place before the theatre but the quality has gone down hill unfortunately.

We were thrilled to see that they have a bread basket with butter on the table. A nice addition/touch that was oddly missing for several years. Everything else: entrees, desserts, knowledge servers was of the highest caliber.

We have Tuesday season tickets for La Jolla Playhouse and absolutely love coming here for dinner before the show. The food options are interesting, delicious, and the wine list is lovely. Service is always top notch and they have it mastered to close out so many tabs for tables as showtime approaches! Love this restaurant.

This is a great place to go pre-theatre, however, the service is very slow and the food is good, but not great. It certainly is not worth the La Jolla prices they are charging, but you pay for convenience. The theater is a few steps away. Our different salads were drowned in dressing which took away from the flavor in my opinion. One of asked for dressing on the side, and still got a drowned salad. My table mates had sushi and said it was good, nothing to get excited about. I had a wagyu burger that was sadly overcooked and dry. It was disappointing because I gave up a steak for the flavor of wagyu as I love wagyu and Kobe beef. Overall, it was a pleasant evening because of the company and going to the theater. The server was nice and doing her best. No big complaints, just don’t go in with high expectations and you will be fine.

James' Place is my staple for pre-theatre dining, not only for the convenience but the excellent variety of dining options and my personal favorites. I make a reservation but end up sitting at the bar to visit with the ladies who are bartending and other patrons to share food and beverage option information. I can hardly go there without the "crispy rice" but there are so many options from the kitchen and the sushi chef prepares some incredible items as well.
