I had a great experience at James Place overall. I came to this restaurant prior to viewing a play at the La Jolla Playhouse. I was expecting to have a bit of sushi, but it is no longer an option on the menu. I ended up having the Chilean Seabass, which was excellent, I did have to end up putting a little bit of salt and pepper on the steam vegetables for added taste! I also had a couple of blackberry lemon drops, which were really good. The service provided heat and I was satisfied with my experience overall.

Perfect place to get dinner before a show at the Playhouse. Short walk to any of the 3 theaters. We both had the bunless Kobe burger and it was delicious. Our waiter, Elvis, was very attentive and helped us pace our meal to not feel rushed before the show. We always eat there before the evening performance we’re attending and try different items from their menu. Everything has been very good - never disappoints.

Great place for dinner before going to the La Jolla Playhouse. Excellent food and service. I think their cocktails could use some work, but the bartenders are always happy to try to make the customers happy.

I can truly say this was one of the worst meals I have ever had. I had a $56 Chilean sea bass. It was a frozen piece of fish that was totally over cooked. The garlic fried rice and the zucchini side were very sad. All barely edible and definitely not worth the price. The $14 dessert was tiny.

A pleasant, convenient place to go before going to La Jolla Playhouse. However the food was highly overpriced for a small piece of fishy sea bass, some cooked veges and a scoop of rice. Service was decent.

The prices are quite high relative to the offerings. We paid over $150 - two entrees, one salad, one cocktail, one dessert. When I ordered I requested mushrooms be omitted from my entree due to an allergy and then reminded our waitress again as she finished our orders. As I took my first bite, I saw the dish was filled with mushrooms and therefore not edible. Having to wait for another dish to be prepared meant I only had time for a few bites (we had tickets to the theater right next to the restaurant). We expected that the meal would have been comped or a complimentary dessert offered - but nothing. Very disappointed.
