Covid has forced this intimate restaurant to serve outside under tents, and the evening was quite cold. The food was very nice, and attentive service but we would have enjoyed our anniversary dinner indoors. Not the fault of Izunami, they are doing their best under these strained conditions.
Server forgot to bring out two sauces that were to go with my steak bibimbob dish and server erroneously added two $10 desserts to our bill which we did not order.
We hope this was remedied before you left. Thanks for your patience while we train a lot of new servers. But thanks for the feedback so we can bring it to their attention.
Service was uneven. They have done a wonderful job with outdoor dining. Food was terrific.
We are currently training a LOT of new staff, so apologies on the uneven service. It is a challenge to find professionals to work with all the covid restrictions we have had imposed on us, but our goal is to provide the best service we can! Thank you for the feedback, though: we need it to improve!
I chose the chef's menu for its value and I added a dessert at the end for a sweet finish. I also tried one of the a Sake glass. Portions were great the only disappointment was the almond crusted cheesecake.
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your dessert. We have a new fall menu, and hopefully you will find something on the sweet side that pleases you more (the apple crisp served on a hot skillet is getting rave reviews right now!)
The venue is currently under large open air tents with tables spread more than 6 feet away. Mask were expected when speaking with the waitstaff which seemed a very good idea. Wednesday night at this time they offer 1/2 price wine which we partook of, ordered the sashimi special for appetizer and the tuna was very good. We split an awesome hamburger and had the fried peppers which were my favorite. Service was good.
We are hoping for an eventual return to the more elaborate pre-Covid omakase menu, but the slightly pared down post-Covid version is still delicious.
We are looking forward to a post-covid dining world, too! Chef can't wait to share his full omakase menus again. In the meantime, we are just updating the fall menus and have brought back some favorites like bibimbap!
WAITER RAUL WAS MAGNIFICENT! They are doing a great job with the masks and social distancing in three large tents. Food is always fantastic.
Thank you for appreciating our server Raul: we will pass on the praise! It will make his day.
Possibly one of the best meals of my life. Despite sitting in tents outside, they were very accommodating and gave us blankets for the cool weather. Service is was on point, although a bit of a nuisance to put your mask on each time the server approached. I hope they get the indoor seating sorted out before the snows come.
Highly recommended, a personal favorite as they have the best chef on the west coast in my opinion!
Thank you for such high praise! We are doing every thing we can during these challenging times to keep both our staff and our guests safe. We firmly believe that mask wearing is the best defense we have to stop the spread of covid, but are working very hard on installing new air purification systems inside the restaurant to make indoor dining even safer----hopefully the governor will let us open up our indoor seating before the snow comes!
wouldn't have gone had we known
there was no indoor seating. Due to the cold & wind which felt like a wind tunnel where we sat, it was a challenge to enjoy. Finally brought out the heaters which helped but you should have been more prepared to deal with situation. Also, we wanted to mitagate
by having a hot saki before dinner to deal with it & discovered that wasn't possible... only COLD .... You need to adapt to the situation.
We are so sorry you missed all the announcements and head's up about our covid safe dining situation that we post on our websites, social media---and here on open table when you make your reservation. We feel that we have adapted quite marvelously to these challenging times: tents, heaters, blankets----everything we can do to make it work. Our menu is shifting now to a fall menu, when we intend to add back on warm sake to the list: perhaps on your next visit you'll be able to enjoy that!
Tacos outstanding, watermelon salad tasteless - red crunch?? Waiters had too much attitude. Didn’t expect only Spanish spoken at a Japanese restaurant. The waiters thought it was cute. I can speak Japanese and Spanish - so what. Expensive. 2 glasses of wine, 2 sakes, 4 tacos and watermelon. $100! Really?
Thanks for the feedback. We are very proud of our multilingual staff---at the Waves overall over 35 languages are spoken. However, our restaurant staff does indeed speak more than just Spanish! They were probably just having a little light fun in the middle of their stressful job. The food portion (which you gave 5 stars, thank you) of your meal was quite reasonable----sorry if you felt that the beverage portion was not a good value.
Fabulous food, beautiful location, might have been an off day but very slow service. Lunch took 2hrs
A must do dinner great food, small dishes abound, sake flight way to go!
Nice location and excellent service. The food was average at best. As we all were sitting outside the amount of traffic up and down on the gravel drowsy and cars wheels spinning out was a detractor to the setting. Constant doors closing. But good for the restaurant for trying to stay open.
Indeed it is a challenge to offer outdoor dining in the time of covid! We are very lucky to have the space and gardens and amazing views that many other restaurants don't have access to----and consider the driveway part just a minor inconvenience in exchange to be able to dine out at all. Hopefully you'll give us another try when covid is over!
Good food, safe outdoor seating area, poor service with a waiter who was very spacey, slow and inattentive.
the food was great and I know they are making the best of a pandemic situation but the ambiance lacked - it's not their fault.
Overall we had a terrible meal at Izanami. In the past this has been a favorite restaurant, but I will not go back until things have changed. The "patio dining" is a tent in the parking lot. Cars were driving by and idling directly next to the table for most of the meal. It was also extremely cold throughout the meal. They set up heaters after 7PM which did very little to warm the dining area. The food was not as good as usual and many of our favorite items were missing from the menu. All this I could forgive, given they are trying to stay open during the pandemic. But in addition, the service was terrible. The wait staff was inattentive, many of our items took far too long to arrive. The sake suggestion was not enjoyable and overall we were treated as though we were a burden. The service is the one aspect the restaurant has full control over during the pandemic and this service was the worst I have experienced. Not a good night.
Indeed it is a challenge to offer outdoor dining in the time of covid! We are very lucky to have the space and gardens and amazing views that many other restaurants don't have access to----and consider the cars/driveway part just a minor inconvenience in exchange to be able to dine out at all. We are working with our staff on more training so expect better service next time you give us a try----but perhaps you should wait until covid is over!
Currently seating outdoors due to COVID. Disappointed in other diners that did not do as requested and leave their masks on when not eating/drinking. Aside from that, only real disappointment was my meal. As I am gluten free with additional food allergies, I ordered the stir fry. It was good, but very bland. Not enough veggies to justify the price. However, my daughter's meal was great, as was our dessert and service. I believe our server was Raul and he was excellent.
Thank you for joining us. All of our guests are taught the covid-protocol rules when dining with us, and almost all gladly comply. I'll bring your observation to staff's attention so that they can remember again to keep up their vigilance about compliance with our rules. We'll also mention to chef that the veggie dish may be a little small (he always is very generous with his proteins!) Thank you for the feedback: it helps to make us better!
The outdoor space overlooking the Santa Fe mountains with changing colors and breezes is the best environment you could ask for. The garden full of orange and yellow nasturtiums and sunflowers will lift your spirits! The Chirashi special was delicious and less expensive than it usually is in sushi places. The Nami burger and shichimi fries are as good as ever. The share pot of gen AI cha was comforting and the waitstaff is too.
Thank you for the praise! We love our gardens as much as you, especially getting to eat some of the edible flowers in some of chef's dishes! It is delightful to come to work and see such beauty! Please join us again before the winter descends: the colors keep changing, as will our outdoor seating: more heaters, more blankets!
The outdoor tents and service were subject to heavy winds and very cold evening. The heaters in the tents were completely ineffective. Service staff were friendly but not very thorough. Food was good but it was extremely COLD.
We totally agree: dining outside in the time of covid can be a challenge. State covid rules mandate that we cannot lower more than one side of a tent for maximum safe air circulation. We do notify each guest at booking/ confirmation to bring warm clothes & blankets, and have recently purchased more of both. Trying to constantly adapt & stay afloat in these crazy times. Perhaps instead of dinging us with a 2-star rating for things outside our control you should try take out or delivery next time!
Seated across from a millennial couple with a 4 year old ADHD poster child and a crying infant unquieted even after mom pulled out her tit to breastfeed in public. I realize this is not PC but there is an invention called a breast pump useful for such situations . Further dining entertainment was provided by a millennial trio with a yipping Bichon held up to the table. Food uninspired, wine list less than impressive.
We're sorry you didn't appreciate all the characters around you: such great stories to tell! Next time please try our sake menu: one of the biggest and best in the entire US!
The food was superb. Wonderful combos of Japanese with Latin American flair. Service was excellent. They have done a lot to ensure safety of all patrons and staff. Wonderful to sit outside under a tent among the trees.
Thank you for enjoying our covid-safe patios: we are trying our best to keep everyone safe and satisfied!
As usual the food was delicious... however, it appeared that they overbooked the restaurant (all dining outside under tents) and I waited an hour and a half for my lobster ramen bowl... I was ravenous!
So sorry to hear that you had to wait so long! I hope you brought this to your servers or a manager's attention so that they could make things right in the moment.
Service was outstanding. Everybody, and I meant everyone who served us was extremely courteous and helpful. Would love to come back since their burgers were amazing. Too bad I don’t live close by or else I’d be here every week.
Erick, We also wished you lived close by! Thank you for the great review and acknowledging our servers - we hope you can make it back soon!
Excellent food in a beautiful setting. We will be back!
Food was good. Service was awful. Had to track down a server after being seated for nearly 20 minutes just to put in a drink order and then had to continuously track someone down thereafter anytime we needed anything
ReneeH, Thank you for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your food. We hear you and are working to improve our service. We do appreciate your business.
Great- food has become excellent, new outside garden and feeling sitting by the amazing rock buttresses is wonderful.
Would prefer if food came out a bit more slowly and in 2s which go together.
Our sashimi and fried potatoes (!) arrived within 4 minutes of ordering. After we finished those the wine and saki arrived. Then the last two dishes.
All too fast and this is the second time eating there where drinks don’t come until way after food delivered and mostly eaten.
But overall great and we will keep on going back- food is really nicely done!
Anonymous, Thank for for your review. We're glad you have enjoyed our outdoor dining and food. We will bring up the issue with timing on drinks and orders as we agree that this is important and we can do better. Thank you for being a great guest and we look forward to your return!
Top notch everything, even during Covid. The staff were vigilant, friendly, and accommodating. All seating is outdoors. They even delivered a blanket to me, as it was a bit chilly. The omakase (tasting menu) was divine and worth every penny. I’m so glad I made the trip. Beautiful location and fresh, creative, bold food.
Enjoyed the experience, feels like a get away from the city and was relaxed and enjoyed our meal close to nature!
Sarah, Thank you for your great review! We hope you can "get away" and visit again soon!
Beautiful location with great servers- right down to sending me to my room with the chai I hadn’t drunk. The ginger sorbet was amazing. Japanese food is not usually my go to, pleasantly surprised.
Thank you for your visit. We are pleased that our servers took good care of you!
A short drive from downtown Santa Fe with beautiful views! Our dining experience started with warm welcomes from several employees as we were guided to our patio table. The plates are small, yet every bite is packed with flavor and the presentation is refined. Recommend: the sake flight so you can try a trio of their fine sakes, nasu dengaku, popular smoked pork ribs, and their fried oysters (kaki fry) are sublime! Service is attentive, and the dishes were delivered from the kitchen quickly - almost too quickly, so let your server know if you prefer to take more time between dishes. We will come here every time we visit Santa Fe!
Since we had to dine outside it was rather chilly. Servers provided blankets which was appreciated. The heaters would have been nice earlier than later.
Always a beautiful experience regardless.
Hi there - thank you for your review. We are doing our best to operate under the current pandemic protocols and thank you for your understanding. We just got in some thicker, warmer blankets yesterday and we hope that will help! We hope that you'll join us again soon!
Bento box - most ingredients were heavy and too oily. Burger was under cooked and bun was stale/dry. Value factor POOR
Hi there Scott - thank you for your review. I appreciate your feedback and will pass it along to the chef. I do hope that you spoke to the staff during your visit so they could rectify your unsatisfactory meal. I hope that you'll join us again and try some of our other delicious dishes.
This was our first time at Izanami and it was highly recommended to us by two people. Perhaps they were having an off night but, our experience was a solid “meh”. We booked our reservation for a special occasion one week in advance, through Open Table, notating the occasion and asking for a seat with a view. We were seated on time but in a corner directly next to the bathrooms and facing the kitchen prep area. The smell of sewage was very strong and we had to listen to the kitchen staff talk about their weekend shenanigans throughout dinner. The food was excellent but the sever checked on us so sparingly that we ended up giving up on ordering all that we wanted because it was taking so long for her to check on us (up to thirty minutes between visits). We would try Izanami again with friends but won’t seek it out on our own.
We are sad to hear about the poor service you experienced. We will work with the server to pay more attention. Thank you for your comment on the noise you had at that table. We have changed the location of the work area the servers use and have closed that door so the noise and bustle isn't so distracting. The smell was our grease trap, which has also been cleaned and taken care of. We do appreciate the feedback so that we can work to constantly improve. Please give us another chance soon!
Beautiful outdoor dining with a fabulous menu! And wonderful bathroom!
Thank you for your kind review. I am glad that you enjoyed your experience - and our bathrooms! We hope to see you again soon!
Great location great food but horrible horrible service. I can’t express enough how terrible the service was. Let me give specific examples. Our waitress never ever ever came to us. Never asked how we were doing. Never asked what we would like to eat. Our greeter ordered our first drinks and appetizers but then after that we did not get any service. And you would think maybe it was because they were super busy or maybe because the waitress did not know we were assigned to her table right? Nope and nope. She knew she had our table AND she walked by our table several several times but never once asked/offered/provided anything for us. It was so bad that I got up and went to the front to get my check. What a disappointment of a service. Easy fix though : train the staff and get rid of the unfriendly ones because your location and your food is to beautiful and stunning to have that kind of people representing it.
Hi there Ana - thank you for your review. Our goal is to provide excellent service in a timely fashion and it sounds like we dropped the ball during your visit. I am very sorry to hear that your service was anything less than perfect. I appreciate the details as I will use it to educate my team to improve for the future. Would you please let me know when your next visit is so that I can make sure that you are well taken care of and that you have a proper Izanami experience.
Excellent service and delicious, healthy food. This was my first time dining out since the start of covid and I felt very safe.
Thank you for your review! I am so glad that your service and food were excellent and that you felt very safe dining with us. We hope that you will visit us again soon!
We’ve been coming here for years and it has been slipping in service and food quality. The tastiest thing I ordered was a bowl of white rice, which is so sad considering how great this place used to be.
Hi there - thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that your visit was unsatisfactory. Could you please provide me with more details so that I can understand what was missing from your experience?
Not worth the drive - food and ambiance don't match the gorgeous building and setting.
Hi there - thank you for your review. Could you please provide me with some details about your experience so I can understand what was missing from your experience?
We could clearly hear the kitchen staff, they seemed to be having a lot of fun but it completely ruined our relaxing lunch. Staff was parking right below our table, it was loud and we could see and hear everything. The food was good but it was the fact that we could hear and see everything the staff said and did outside of their professional duties detracts greatly from the experience. Disappointed
Hi there Barb - thank you for your review. I am very sorry that our staff's interactions affected your meal. I assure you that I am taking this feedback to my team and will use it to improve for the future. Please do join us again and let me know when you are in so I can make sure that you have a wonderful experience with us.
Beautiful outdoor dining, as always absolutely delicious menu with the best flavor and variety. All the staff was wearing masks and it was very comfortable. I highly recommend.
Thank you for your review! I am very glad that your food and service were excellent and that you were comfortable with out safety protocols. We hope that you will join us again soon!
