Hilo Bay Cafe Ratings and Reviews
The lanai patio seating and water/Hilo view was the best thing about this restaurant. There are so few waterside dining spots in East Hawaii, so it's nice to have one now that they moved to this location. It was a lovely evening as the lights of Hilo came on across the bay.
Service was good, BUT the waitress was SO unfriendly. She NEVER smiled, never said hello nor engaged in any conversation. We were a quiet, undemanding party of six adults. Her expression was always as if she was annoyed, angry, bothered, hates her job. None of the staff was particularly friendly. Does this attitude come from the top down, with perhaps a high opinion of themselves and the restaurant? (we dined at another high end spot across town a few days later and it was TOTALLY the opposite, big friendly smiles from all of the staff, happy that we were there, great service and food!)
We had three sushi rolls and three salads to start. Sushi was good, but I did have an old fish-fishy taste in a couple of the bites. Not super fresh fish for sushi. The side salad was good. Two salads with crab cakes were okay. The crab cakes were tiny-tiny-tiny small and mostly filler, very little crab. Entrees were two pot pies which were very good. Two seafood pastas which were okay, not sure worth the $30 price. A chicken dish was good. One entree was one of the night's specials, a risotto. It was the worst risotto ever, like lumpy rice with little flavor, not a creamy risotto that was craved. It was SO disappointing.
The prices are high for food that is less than good and somewhat small portioned. After the waitress received our $50 TIP in spite of her angry face (our bill was $250), we never saw her again. Or anyone. It would have been nice to have had our waters filled as we ended our evening in conversation.
Hilo Bay Cafe, please get it together. Get friendly. Get rid of the staff that is not happy. Enlarge your portions or adjust your prices. We are locals and would like to rave instead of be unhappy.
For Hilo where it is difficult to find nice places to eat, Hilo Bay Cafe is very nice. Nice ambiance, good service and food. My wife had the veggie burger and I had the chicken. Chicken was good and the veggie burger suprisingly good as well. I am not a veggie burger type but I found it to be very good. I would recommend this place.
The best thing about this restaurant was the view.
We had made a reservation for 7:45pm and weren't seated until about 8:05pm. What's the point of a reservation if you have to wait 20 minutes? To be fair, the host did apologize. But I felt, for good customer service, he should have offered a free appetizer or dessert or discount.
The waitress was not very friendly and spilled water.
I got the seafood pasta for $30 but the clams were "fishy," it was very salty and they could have given more pasta. Overall, the servings were small. My husband got the crabcake salad and he said they were very tasty but they were about 2 inches by 2 inches. My oldest son got the gazpacho which was delicious and a good size. My other son wasn't impressed by his salad. Good thing we got the fries as an appetizer or we would need to go out to eat afterwards.
Some of the best food I've had so far on Oahu and the Big Island. Fancy delicious drinks and really tasty food amid a lovely ocean side setting.
Restaurant is lovely as well with really hip, nice decor. Only drawback for me was the wait staff in general seems apathetic. Our server was acceptable but seemed a little too cool for school attitude and then i noticed the other waiter behaving the same way :(. Nothing monumental but the experience could have been A LOT better if the folks were into it.
We had to wait for ten minutes after our reservation time. Nice dining option with a good water view. Interior is really nice, cocktail was good, food was good. My wife had the orange chicken (wasn't that great according to her), I had the surf and turf which was pretty good, especially the beef.
As a New York City resident, I have dealt with all types of people who operate the “front of the house” in restaurants. The young man working on December 23, 2017 ranks as the rudest and most unprofessional. My husband I left after 45 minutes waiting for our reserved table.
All three of us have dined at Hilo Bay Cafe before, from the time of it's previous location through the move to this fabulous site. We are so grateful for comfortable seats and very fine food to make a friends gathering into a real occasion.
Service is top notch.
It was fairly pricey. We planned on spending about $70 and our bill came out to $100 (not including tip)
I was glad the waitress told us the size of one of the dishes because it was small for the price and I wouldn't have been happy had I ordered it.
The best thing to get there is the Fish & Chips. That's the most delicious item on the menu. My other half drank root beer and I had a coke. We both got refills. He was charged for his second drink because it came in a bottle.
We requested to sit outside. The staff was friendly however the wait time to be served took a while. All in all we were there for 2 hours. Multiple employees came to our table so they were accidentally doubling us up on utensils. We waited about half an hour just to order and then receive our dessert.
Delicious and sophisticated food and varied beverage selection makes for an awesome foodie experience. Gorgeous romantic ambience for outdoor dining. Unbeatable service - even when the waiter brought the wrong dish, they comp'ed it and brought out our order immediately. So impressed with the friendly staff, impressive food, enjoyable atmosphere - tops!
The service was great, the only thing was we waited 20 min for drinks (cocktails). I understand that it was a busy night and the dinner was great, but I would prefer to get drinks earlier than 20 min. Waiting for a dinner is fine as long as we enjoy at the table with drinks.
