Wonderful setting on Hilo Bay! Food is always delicious, service excellent and you cannot beat the amazing setting and ambience! A fantastic experience all around.
Food as usual was excellent. Wild boar should either be taken off the description or put more on the dish. That was the only disappointment of the meal. The dish itself was very good. Maybe more bread to get all the excellent broth. We will be back again soon.
Quick & EZ reservation via Online! Service and Food was excellent! Love the popcorn! Love the ambiance! Love the tasty local food! Happy Dance! :D
Loved it, we’ll come back
Food was, as usual, wonderful. So was Sean’s service. My friend said the Portuguese bean soup was the best she’s had. The mushroom lettuce cups were great. I always order those to share. And, of course, lunch wouldn’t be an occasion without an old fashioned passion.
Lovely setting and an inspired, inventive menu. Our server was a bit uneven -almost distracted - but it was fine. We first sat at the bar for a drink where Tyson runs things very knowledgeably and warmly. I can see why this restaurant is always high on all the lists of Hilo eateries.
Awesome. Really awesome
Great food and great service. Everyone enjoyed it. Great place to eat as a visitor to Hilo.
Have been to this venue each of the past 3 years. Food excellent as was service. Only draw back is the physical layout but they make it work. Outside seating probably best option depending on where they place you
We ordered the cauliflower appetizer, fish and chips, and Hanaoka coconut limeade. Service was friendly. Food was yummy. We left full and satisfied. Huge improvement!
Booked here because 4 friends were attending the Merrie Monarch Festival and we wanted to also have a memorable luncheon.
Hilo Bay Cafe didn’t disappoint! Food was delicious I highly recommend the crispy Taro Quinoa Burger with slivered beets. Fish & Chips were also praised at our luncheon table. We were seated at a table with a lovely view, I will surely book on Open Table for next year’s Merrie Monarch Festival outing with friends.
Usually this is our favorite place to eat in Hilo. But Friday the Chef was too experimental on his cuisine. My husband ordered Orange Chicken. There was nothing orange about it. Table behind us ordered it also and c/o is wasn't the type of Orange Chicken they were expecting. The fish cooked to perfection had pureed olives on top. Overwhelmed the entire plate including the fresh vegetables. Olives on Ono is not ono. We will go back as the sushi was excellent and onion rings dynamite.
This is one of my son’s fave restaurants so we celebrated his 6th B-day here last night. Made reservations, the wait was a tad long after we arrived but it was OK. Food was very good, waitress very kind and informative. I asked for an outside table and the view of the bay was quite spectacular.
To me this restaurant has good food but I have experienced poor service in the recent past, as if the waiter didn’t care for our presence. But that was a different time. Yesterday’s experience was quite pleasant.
Everything was great!!
I asked the waitress for the dairy ingredients in the eggplant Parmesan; the waitress did not want to list that for me.
I go here on occasion for lunch and really enjoy the veggie burger.....crisp with quinoa, pickled onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a fresh baked bun - and a side of hot fries.....the views are stunning, right on the bay.....my companion on this occasion had the rice bowl with chicken, fried egg, korean style pepper sauce and veg.....which he greatly enjoyed. I also like this place for pupus and drinks.....great for date night! If it is raining, easy to park and enter via stairs or elevator and not get completely soaked. This is a place where it is best to make reservation to get the table you want.....it does get busy!
always our go to for special events and when entertaining visitors to the island.
We go to HBC often and love it.
The waitress didn’t even know we had been seated so we didn’t even have anyone greet us at the table for well over 15 minutes and they were not even busy. The French onion soup was great but outside of that the rest of the food was just okay, especially for the price. The Poke had been well rated but I’ve had much better at more simple “hole in the wall” places than here. The sushi and pot pie were a little disappointing.
Disappointing. The ambiance was cold and uninviting. The staff was not friendly at all. The food was ok but we were so put off by the unfriendly atmosphere that it really ruined any redeeming food quality. The staff seemed annoyed that they were there working. Would not recommend. There are much friendly places in Hilo with better food.
We went to Hilo Bay Cafe as rain postponed anniversary dinner. Sometimes when you anticipate something for too long it fails to live up to your expectations but in this case it was everything we had hoped it would be. The food was great. The mushroom lettuce caps were a great way to start and we had the rack of lamb special that was superb. Perfectly cooked and a lovely presentation. Our server was friendly and knowledgable about the ingredients and prep, it was quiet, and all in all it was a great experience. We'll be going back again for my birthday.
Nice dinner. Great service. French fries too soggy. Overall nice place to dine
Our Waitress was awesome! She was so helpful, friendly, and funny! The food was ono! Wish the desserts were a little bigger, enough to share.
Mostly lived up to the hype. Beautiful entry with unusual lighting and art. Prefer lunch to dinner because of elevated, gorgeous view of Hilo Bay. And one of few restaurants in Hilo that is a bit more upscale. Special cocktails were excellent except for a bit too sweet for our tastes and had to send one back. To his credit, the bartender made a new one adjusting the sweetness. We had a rice bowl and fish and chips. Though the rice bowl was delicious it did not live up to the waiter's description of having lots of vegetables. Again, they corrected the dish and brought a side of vegetables at no charge. Again a sign of a restaurant that works to make a good dining experience an excellent one. Fish and chips were excellent. Service was fairly casual but fine for lunch. Will go back again for sure.
Was disappointed that they were out of the special for the night, but then ordered the Surf & Turf w/ ahi tuna. Delicious. Also ordered the Pork Belly roll as appetizer.. so good. Glad went here while visiting Hilo.
Great location with good local food and reasonable prices.
Check in very disorganized, appeared to be short staffed. Also spent time chatting instead of working. Food was good and waitress good but stretched. Seated outside and cold. No blankets available for guests and no heaters.
Excellent food and service and affordable. Drinks were good too
Way too expensive for what we got. Service not very good. Server brought coffee, which was lukewarm at best, and that was it until we got the bill.
Very modern decor, we got a table outside with a view of the bay and the night lights of Hilo. Could’nt have been any better.
Make a reservation if lunching over the weekend, it is a popular spot! The sushi/sashimi pieces are larger than many places, and the seasoned popcorn instead of bread was a nice bonus
This was our first trip to HBC. Food and service was FANTASTIC! Will def return. 🌴😀🤙
The location is great as was the food. Our compliments to the chef. In our group we had fish and chips, a potpie, a ribeye, and a filet. All were done very well.
Unfortunately our server was very rude. She definitely seemed irritated that we took too long to order, never asked to refill our drinks, was snippy to one of our older party members when he asked her to repeat a menu item, and actually took away 2 of our diner plates without asking if we were finished with our meals. We are local professionals living and working in Hilo and this was our first opportunity to visit HBC. I got the distinct impression that she thought we were tourists and treated us as such. Shame on her for treating any guest in that manner. The hostess and bartender were both very friendly and attentive, unfortunately this did not carry to our waitress. With all of the other choices here in town, I do not know if I would subject myself to that kind of behavior again.
Went there for lunch and ate on the lanai. Nice ambiance with pretty view. Had a good (quite spicy) bloody Mary, good onion soup and great grilled cheese.
Always a reliable choice for good food at Hilo Bay Cafe. Sometimes it's a bit too busy and you regret not having made reservations. Other times it can be a little noisy. Overall some of the best gourmet food for the buck in Hilo... and the servers are very nice and attentive. Though this last time we all drank our waters and waiting a bit before our server notice. Small-kine complaints though... one of our favorites for sure!
It was a last minute dinner date. We enjoyed the service and the food.
Found the place on open table as we were driving around. Busy but efficient. Nice surprise in Hilo.
Great food, great view. My wife & I both had the fish & chips. Fantastic! Best mahi mahi in panko we've had.
We enjoyed food and nice decor. Drinks were especially good. The waitress rushed us so much, bringing out food before cocktails were half finished, bringing dessert menu before main encore was finished and bringing unasked for check before dessert had been half eaten. We felt like turnover was more important than the dining experience.
