Hilo Bay Cafe
Friday and Saturday 11:00 am to 9:30 pm
The hand-made tagliatelle with Panang Curry, fresh assorted mushrooms, peas, etc. was delicious and the Filet Mignon never disappoints. A must try is the Beef Carpaccio.
The only reason 5 stars was not given all around was because it was uncomfortably hot. There was a stand alone fan right near our table that we moved to blow directly on us.
Consistently good food; good variety of choices and open on Mondays where most other restaurants are closed!
As a vegetarian, often times the only choice on a restaurant menu is some pasta with a few pieces of vegetables tossed on top. Not so at Hilo Bay Cafe! We started out with Mushroom Lettuce cups and Crispy Onion Rings - both absolutely delicious. The entree of Big Kid Grilled Cheese was THE BEST grilled cheese sandwich I have ever eaten! It was crunchy and flavorful. The dessert of A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts was a perfect ending to this wonderful meal. And, the setting is lovely, no matter what type of weather.
I invited friends visiting from the mainland for lunch at HBC. Adults and kids all loved it and the food was fantastic! I recommend the lunch bowl with the homemade spam...Ono!
Great food, drinks and VIEW!
Food's quality has stayed consistent even after moving to a much larger facility. Good job!
We loved Hilo Bay Cafe so much that we returned the following night. We had great service, our waiter even recognized us instantly the following night and welcomed us back. Even though we weren't in his section the following night, he tracked down our table to say "hello". The food and drinks were amazing. We ordered an appetizer, cocktails, and dessert both nights and they were as delicious as the entrees. Would highly recommend ordering off of the specials menu they offer every day. Everything was delicious!
Amazing food and service
But ask for a table outside, they were empty and didnt let us sit on them becuase they were supposedly reserved
Good food, well presented. Very friendly service
Wonderful food and our server, Matt, was very attentive. Only negative was my Old Fashioned was pretty mediocre, which I can live with given the food and location.
On other side of island for the day. Found restaurant on Open Table. Was even better than reviews. We’ve had some fabulous meals and this was on par with the 5 star resort meals - but wZy cheaper! Will definitely eat there again next trip to the Big Island.
Food was unique and delicious. The eggplant Parmesan custard and mushroom lettuce cups were a big hit. Our waitress Sherry was a superstar and made us feel great. Highly recommended.
It was a lovely meal however when we tried to order off the kids menu for our 14 year old (very picky eater due to autism) the waitress said that they would need to charge us $5 more for the same food. My husband explained the situation and we were not charged the extra but I think the restaurant policy needs to be changed if this is standard practice.
We did not wait at all for our table. We were seated outside and had a nice view.
Dinner was delicious and our server Zack was the best!!
I have only eaten here twice when it first opened and I thought the menu was over-priced and the food wasn't the greatest! In fact I only came back because I wanted to give it another try since the view of Hilo Bay is the best other than in the few hotel venues in the area. My wife ordered the sashimi bowl which was basically a few large slices of freshly cut ahi on a bed of organic greens which looked great and it came with a lemon vinegar type of dressing on the side. My wife thoroughly enjoyed it and ordered a small maki roll sushi on the side. I ordered the catch of the day and had a couple of pieces of fresh ahi seared on the outside with steamed green beans and some prepared baby potatoes with an aeoli dressing on the side. At first I thought the portions were on the small side but after I finished my meal I felt satisfied and contented. Although it could have been the two Heineken beers I consumed too. So during the course of the meal when the waiter asked how we liked the food I told him that my wife and I were really impressed with the food in its presentation, taste and also fast and quick wait service. He explained that they had just gotten their old chef back and that he had revised the whole menu. All in all a great welcomed dining experience in our little town of Hilo🤗👍💕
Our favorite spot in Hilo. Staff is super. Service Very good. Love the food
The food here is delicious. My husband said his entree was the best pork chop he'd had in a really long time. I'm vegan and I appreciate all the options they had. My thai flatbread was really yummy as well. Our waitress was great - she was very knowledgeable about the menu right off the bat. It was nice to find such an upscale dining experience in such a small laid back town as Hilo. We'd return here for sure.
Everything's was great. Thank you
Making a reservation was very easy via the open table app. The view on the lanai was absolutely amazing! I would definitely return with my family and close friends. Our waitress was very courteous and attentive to our needs. Our food didn’t get served as quickly as we would’ve preferred, but when it did arrive, the food was just great!
This is one of my favorites - if not the favorite - restaurant in Hilo. The food is always absolutely scrumptious, regardless of what you choose. I always start with the grilled cauliflower and a warabi roll (fiddle fern), but other favorites are the poke bowl (I like mine spicey - optional). Regardless of fish, you can be assured it will be prepared to perfection with an incredible sauce or glaze or spice. This trip, I had the rib eye and must honestly say, it rivaled any steak I have had in Texas! They also offer a very nice, and flavorful, vegetarian selection.
They have a fantastic view of Hilo Bay and Hilo waterfront also. Hilo Bay Cafe is definitely on Must-Dine list
Request that the chef please remove chili pepper seeds so it doesn’t burn the tongue!
We had bread for starters & then the special main dish: my Thai bread which was a spicy flavorful peanut sauce with tofu & shredded veggies on top. It was good but wow! The chili pepper seeds burned my tongue. I had to order almond mint tea to soothe my tongue.
What a great spot! It couldn’t have been better!
Everything lived up to our expectations of great food, service & ambiance, we will be frequent customers
The waitress set us up at large table with a beautiful view of the water and she made excellent food and drink recommendations. I would easily return to this location next time I return to Hawaii.
This has becoming my default restaurant when guest arrive from the mainland. It's close to the airport, great view, fantastic food and exemplary service. While fresh seafood is probably what they are best known for, they have a good selection for land lovers and vegetarians......in fact their warabi roll (fiddle fern, cucumbers and more) is one of my favorites. Did I mention they offer sushi, sashimi and poke? Great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as well
Strongly recommend reservations as this is a popular place. If you can sit on the lanai, you get one heck of a view
We love the view of Hilo Bay from the window seats. The food is always tasty and they have quite a few vegetarian choices. The food presentation is attractive and creative. The staff is pleasant is attentive. The prices are pretty comparable to the other restaurants in the area and is affordable.
We enjoyed the service and the food here
Greeter was physically absent from checkin for 10 minutes during which the queue was growing and restless. One couple walked out. When finally greeted it was with total lack of enthusiasm.
After seated we waited at least 10 minutes before seeing waiter. After that we did okay.
Food was very good.
Hilo Bay Cafe is upstairs; we did not see an elevator. We were treated very well. Our table was nice, the view of the bay excellent. Both indoor and outdoor dining is available. We would definitely return, however, found limited choices to our liking. The food selected was excellent, in fact my wife commented she had the best scallops she can remember. So if you like scallops, we highly recommend Hilo Bay Cafe.
As a former employee, I wanted to bring my uncles who just moved to the island some place nice. They had lived on Kauai for two years and are now living in Kona. They said that Hilo bay Cafe was one of the hands down best restaurants they’ve been to since living in Hawai’i. I enjoyed the new Reuben that chef Josh added to the lunch menu and am excited to come back for some more of the new menu items. As always the sushi was amazing, HBC is a nice enjoyable spot for a lunch with family and friend but I highly recommend a reservation, but the wait is worth it!
Food is always exemplary. Service is warm, friendly and perfect. If you can sit outside, its especially nice. While I am not a vegetarian, I will recomend the wasabi roll - a vegetarian roll with fiddle fern, cucumber and more. I always have their poke (spicy). I have yet to have a bad meal, although I will say their ml ahi mai fish tacos are unexciting. When they do one fish tacos yum, however. Also their lemonades and yes the mai tai!
Always wonderful. Great view of Hilo Bay. Excellent sushi. Excellent attention to food preparation. I thoughtful professional kitchen. Clint
Tables around us were very noisy, food was not nearly as impressive as the last 2 times I went.
Very hands off from the wait staff which made it difficult to request some items.
Food was way too oily (too much dressing?) on the crab cakes. Fish and chips were dry, almost hard rather than crispy.
Would like to try again since it may have just been a bad day
As a resident of East Hawai'i, I've enjoyed Hilo Bay Cafe since before it moved to its current location. But I've started to become a bit dissatisfied with their food. There just does not seem to be any special flavor in many of the dishes. An example is the Mushroom Pot Pie. It has a nice crust and was very hot when served. But the taste was just plain. There didn't seem to be anything in the way of herbs to help bring out the flavor of the ingredients. Even a sushi roll was plain and didn't have any extra flavors to distinguish it from the sushi roll I buy at our local grocery store.
I do like the view of Hilo Bay and the service is really good. The way that the rooms are broken up by half walls does keep the noise level down. It's a really nice place for good conversation.
Much better service from the month before! Only con was they had no beef carpaccio that night.
Not such a great experience, hoped for better
The waitress wasn't on it tonight. She put a biscuit when we asked for fries, she put water in the ice tea etc. Plus it was hit in the restaurant tonight
Hilo Bay Cafe is my FAVORITE restaurant on the whole island! I always recommend it to people coming over from the mainland! And go whenever I can!
We arrived early for our dinner reservation on 6-1-18 and had drinks at the bar. I had a bourbon-based cocktail with light cherry liquor which was outstanding and reminded me of a Manhattan. The popcorn offered at the bar was fresh and tasty. At our table, my spouse had crab cakes and grilled cauliflower appetizers, enough for dinner. I had mouth-watering Maui rum BBQ ribs—which did fall off the bones! The dimly lit atmosphere makes dining an intimate experience, even though every seat is filled. Definitely make reservations as this place is very popular with regulars and visitors. The server we had was pleasant but could have been more prompt. The reception and serving staff needs more training. That is my only negative comment.
Excellent food, great service, reasonable prices!
