Food was really good!!! Everything we had was very delicious: French onion soup, sushi, and filet were amazing!! Make sure you make a reservation because we did for 6:30 on Friday and people that didn’t had a 40 min wait!!!

I thought it was great that I could make reservations on line. There was a “special request “ field so I wrote asking if I could bring my own cake which was totally disregarded. Not a problem really since I was not denied I just brought it to the table.
We were seated promptly at or before our reservation time when all 5 guests arrived.
We were seated on the lanai. We were not given a choice which I completely understood as it was busy. It was cold and rainy but we two women had worn sweaters. The waiter explained he would like to seat us inside but there wasn’t any table available which of course can’t be helped. Then behind us a waitress fell with a great thud! The rain picked up and we asked if the shade could be pulled down. No problem, the waiter went to get a tool to lower the shade (I think that’s what he said). When he returned he said we could move indoors. I advised everyone to walk cautiously so as not to fall like the waitress did.
We sat at a table for 8. I’m guessing they hadn’t wanted to give it to a table of five up to that point. We each gratefully carried our water indoors. The waiter brought our silverware to us We realized once we started eating that I saw our napkins were outside on the table we had vacated which was no problem to fetch ourselves. One of us asked for a napkin and it was brought to him after a third request.
Three fish n chips orders came first. I was shocked at the sight of the fries. — totally unacceptable: it looked limp and appeared to hv been reheated (recycled?). All three appeared that way but mine especially seemed to be the dregs , small and limp-looking. Not something I’d expect from a restaurant where one went for a special occasion. I nicely asked my waiter if I could have a new batch and he said this is how the fries come out. I said it appeared limp and wilty. He asked if I had tried it and i admitted that I had not. I then tried it and was disappointed; the waiter said no problem he would bring

Food was good, ordered the Orange Chicken dish. Green Beans were exceptional. Pineapple Cilantro Mojito was great. Went on a Friday night and service was a bit slow. Wasn't to crowded just took a long time. All in all, was a good experience with good food.

Eat there often but rarely for dinner. It surpassed my expectations. Will go back many more times.

Wanted a nice restaurant in Hilo with a waterfront view. Had trouble finding one but read the reviews and this seemed about the best around. It sits high on the waterfront, but unfortunately much of the view is blocked by trees- but you do get a see a little bay view (not really ocean view). Thought the pricing was a little high and the food good, but not great. We both had fresh catch (ono, mac nut crusted) and it was pretty good, but definitely not the best we have had in HI. Service a little slow at times, but overall acceptable. Bread was an extra charge (hate when restaurants do that) but it was warm and very good. Overall would say it is probably the best restaurant in Hilo for an up-scale, special occasion restaurant. Not great but very good and worth the trip when on that side of the island.

Everything was great! Got seated within 5 minutes of arrival. Waiter was very pleasant and responsive. Service was also great, food and drinks were excellent. We would go back there again!

Maybe we just ordered the wrong thing but of the three sushi rolls we ordered, none were remarkable. Great views and ambiance but all else mediocre.

We had a great time here! Our waitress Jess was the best and the food and drinks were pretty creative! We will come back at our next vacation on Big Island!

We drove from the west side of Hawaii island to Hilo on the east coast with our friends from Australia. We had been to Hilo Bay Cafe two years ago and wanted to share the great food and bayside ambience with them. We love the fresh and tasty food made with local ingredients. The backdrop of Hilo Bay from where we sat was beautiful. Our friends were impressed.

Tried HBC on recommendation of others and on-line reviews. After several previous trips to Hilo on our annual visit to the Big Island, we made a point of coming here. Our dinner here did not disappoint in terms of taste, quality and service, being seated in the bar area sucked. We ordered ribeye steak and the scallops special. Both were wonderful and expertly done! Ian our server was great, very personable and attentive. My Our only complaint is where we were seated.

Yes, it was a Friday night, but we did have reservations made some time in advance. If I had known the booths in the bar area were a tight fit for a big guy with a bad back and the adjacent bar noise, I would have waited for another table in a quieter part of the restaurant (they don't lower their prices at these tables). It would not deter me from coming back, just smarter on where to ask to be seated. Again, superb dinner, backed by great service, just not the best seating to make it rise above an acceptable dinning experience.

Went there last night for my 25th birthday. My boyfriend and I have heard good things about it so we thought we’d try it out. We got there exactly on time, they had popcorn on the table that was stale and chewy. We ordered a half order or bread, a sushi roll, and steak and pasta for our entrees. Maybe about 20 mins in we got our sushi and bread. They didn’t give us soy sauce with the sushi which was kind of annoying and they didn’t even check on us so I couldn’t ask for some so I just ate it without. It was okay, honestly the bread was the best thing we had from there. An hour goes by, nobody comes to check on us and we’re wondering where our food is. Other tables that sat down after us were getting their food and the table along side us ordered nearly the same thing and their appetizers and entrees came within 15 mins of each other (if that) after about an hour and ten minutes our entrees come. I’m starving and cut into my steak which was raw. Not rare, not medium rare but RAW! My boyfriends pasta was swimming in who knows what, the shrimp wasn’t deveined it was just kind of mediocre. The waiter comes by and my boyfriend shows the waiter the steak and he was like okay I’ll take that back that looks definitely undercooked.. yeah, I could mentally head chef Ramsay saying “RAW” in my head. A few minutes after that someone brings a complimentary bowl of edamame for waiting for my food. Honestly I wish someone gave me that before since I was waiting over and hour for my entree but nonetheless that’s nice. My boyfriend was starving so I told him to go ahead and eat. My steak finally came back, perfectly cooked just over-seasoned. Thankfully I had a side of rice because it was extremely salty, so was the vegetables. I couldn’t even finish it because of how salty it was. I ordered the wine that was advised to have with the steak, oh god that was a mistake. They did not pair well AT ALL! Anyways, not a happy birthday for me :(
