Overall not impressed. The service was very poor and our table was not checked on. At all. It was really comical honestly.
It’s a beautiful restaurant but I was curious why it wasn’t full on a Friday night. You order dinner online so there isn’t a server except when they run you ur food. I ordered the Ragu dish and my gf, ordered the fried chicken. It was flavorless. I don’t mean that to be an insult bc the food was good and cooked correctly but it literally didn’t have flavor. It needs some spice or salt or something. I thought I had covid for a moment but the fries were delicious. I should have ordered the burger
Food was overpriced and not very good. I don’t like the online ordering. No wait staff to help describe the food or help you with your order.
We went early on a Saturday. We were the only people other than staff. We waited by the hostess table for 10 minutes. No one - there were six employees about four feet away - said “hello” or “we’ll be right there” nothing. We said “hello” and just got nasty looks. So that started the experience. Finally a tragically hip hostess showed us to our table. And let us know she was very busy. She then explained that everything was ordered from your phone, left a half carafe of water with two glasses and was gone. The menu looked interesting but very limited. We had questions but no one would come over to answer them. We ordered drinks and two “starter plates”. The starter plates came out with no flatware or small plates so we could share. And again not a word from the woman who put them on the table. We tried to ask a question and she was gone. Drinks came later with flatware and then someone brought smaller plates. By this time food was stone cold. The entire staff was sitting at the bar talking while we were there. The bar was about 8 feet away in direct sight. Completely ignored us. Only one of them wore a mask. So it wasn’t covid fear that kept them away. We were there for anniversary dinner but decided to leave and went to another place down the street for dinner, drinks, etc. I wouldn’t ever recommend this place. I left a Yelp review and noticed the owner responds to the bad reviews and blames the reviewers for the bad experience. I wish I would have seen that before I went. It was a lousy experience, the food was ok but no where near great and the service was absolutely terrible. Go somewhere else.
Disappointing food and service. Had heard so much about this place.
Payment app didn’t work well for us causing us both to get our food at different times. My boyfriend was done eating his entire meal before I even got my drink. Had they had a server they could’ve made sure we were both served together. It ruined our date because he felt bad for eating but I didn’t want his food to get cold.
Food was below par, more like a diner than a full scale restaurant, but with full scale prices. I was really disappointed. We want to support local restaurants but won’t be coming back here again.
Good spot! Would love to see a come back of more of their classics. The menu is a bit reduced, but still good.
The carafes are a super deal!
The food was delicious but the service was lousy.
Lovely place, menu was a little limited but the quality of the food was good. Service was good but I hate having to order an pay through an app, I know it’s for good reasons but maybe a little unnecessary with other precautions in place
The system of ordering online while at the restaurant was confusing.
They do not offer happy hour anymore
Love this place, but the current menu system is just kind of dumb. Having people sit down, giving them a paper menu but then making them download an app (and all the grief that comes with that on the fly) and having them order directly to the app and then to table. Once you did that, it *was* quick but the overall experience was less than desirable. I get it Covid etc...but, come on. I will not be going back.
self service indoors with full tip expected which i gave
very reduced menu
uber salty food
drinks were best part of meal
No service. You are required to order via cellphone even though dining in. Then, they want a full tip for service. Insulting!
Terrific farm to table food- interesting combinations.
We made a 7:30pm Friday night reservation here specifically to kick off the weekend with an Adult Happy Meal. Seems like a great deal and great food and we were looking forward to it all week. When we got to the restaurant they were completely out of burgers and fries and a few other menu items, when the menu is limited to begin with. We couldn’t believe this was the case for a prime time, Friday night reservation. We left the restaurant and ended up getting a fast casual burger instead as all other restaurants on the east side had long wait times to be seated. Needless to say, we were highly disappointed and didn’t get to spend our Friday night the way we planned.
Very mediocre experience. Had to order on the phone and no table service for an above-average priced restaurant was odd. Also out of the majority of wines on the list
Plastic silverware for a $17 meal just doesn’t feel appropriate.
Very rude server. They were out of several menu items. They’re under staffed and do not have a good system for ordering.
Great collaborative service from the staff. Bartender was attentive to preferences & with the pre-order during covid dining, each member of the Hillside team were respectful of space & on top of food/drink expediting.
The southern dumplings were so delicious. We will be coming back often
My mother was eager for there to be a “rehearsal dinner” she could provide before my wife and I’s backyard wedding, during these Covid times. Hillside Farmacy let us reserve OUTDOOR seating while other restaurants would only guarantee A table, which is of course a useless taunt, an insult, for a party of ten that went through the trouble of quarantining so we could have a wedding. I was disappointed to be told that we had to order via toast tab’s mobile website. It simply doesn’t have all the things you want that you know they have on it, BUT they were super nice to me every time I called them on the phone to order a drink off menu and I came to see these annoyances as understandable growing pains adapting to these times. The food was wonderful. Hillside Farmacy is absolutely first class at all the things they can reasonably be expected to be. I expect they’ll figure out better messaging to soften the blow of service adjustments sometime soon.
One of my favorite restaurants in Austin. The ambience here is NEXT level, you just feel like you're a better version of yourself. The food is excellent and the service was superb; they even let us stay and chat 20-30 mins after closing because they saw we were having a good time and we lost track of when the restaurant closed. If you want a night to remember, head to Hillside Farmacy.
Outdoor seating. To minimize interaction with staff, you will order on the website for food and drinks.
the french fries...wow. if you're a fry connoisseur, you're welcome.
We are eager to patronize restaurants during the Covid situation. Some have maintained the friendly and welcoming environment and scaled the menu to fewer dishes while keeping high standards. Sad to say that Hillside hasn’t. Staff barely greeted us, didn’t offer or bring water or explain the ordering system. Tables were bare of a candle or flower or anything to brighten up the evening. The ordering system is a mess and doesn’t allow you to order additional items. The food was ok- burgers have a big place on the menu, which is surprising given the high level of the previous menu. They were fine, as were the fries. The cheese plate was the saddest I’ve ever seen- 2 or 3 slices of cheese, some pickles, almonds, 1/4 a sliced apple, and some almonds- and a teaspoon of strawberry jam (?). The bar closed promptly at 9, even though our reservation was for 8; the bartender very kindly offered to make us 2 more drinks. The restaurant across the street was blasting live music but Hillside kept on their piped in music which was annoying, as was the EDM Halloween music they played after the music stopped across the street. The whole experience was sad, and not worth our time or money. I’ll remember what Hillside used to be like.
Hillside did a wonderful job of keeping social distance while still giving the “dine out” feeling. The waitress was really helpful, service was prompt, and the drinks were delightful.
The service was excellent but ordering from the online menu was difficult. All of the merch items should maybe be separated from the restaurant order menu. Felt ok safe but our table was pretty close to the one next to us making noise level kind of high.
While I realize Covid has changed everything they really need to find a better system. We were seated and told to order online which was fine. But there was no way to order everything on one ticket - you had to order each time you wanted another drink or appetizer. There was only one hostess and she was always busy and didn’t explain the process very well. The drinks we wanted were not in the menu (scotch and soda) but available at the bar. This took about 15 minutes to figure out and the bartender added it to the menu which was great. Then when we ordered drinks it said it would take 30-35 minutes but only took about 5. We had to place another online order for food. We did and then about 10 minutes later were told they were out of 2 of the 4 entrees we ordered. We changed what we wanted to hamburgers and I’ve been meaning to go back and see if we were credited for the price difference. I’ve been to Hillside Farmacy before (pre-Covid) and was excited to go back but until they find a better way to order and more staff to help it’s not worth the hassle of their system. I gave it a 4 because I loved it so much the first time but feel like they need to rethink their system.
This used to be a great restaurant. However, when I dined there last week, the food was horrible. It took almost an hour to get a luke warm cheese plate. I have to wonder if the food was pulled out of a freezer and warmed in a microwave. I have to doubt if they even have a chef. No wait staff - order on your phone. People busing tables (as there were no waiters) acted completely annoyed to be there. Dirty plates were piled up on the "safe-distance" tables around us. Don't waste your money or time. Soon to be another COVID casualty.
The experience at hillside was completely different because of covid. I understand that time are rough but I’ve been to plenty of my favorite restaurants during covid and had a great experience given the circumstances. You don’t get a server here anymore. And you have order everything on a mobile platform and every time you order something you have pay and tip. It’s such an unpleasant experience and I will not be going back. They also don’t have happy hour and no oysters. Which is what they are known for. None of this is communicated online.
They’re possibly the only place we’re visiting at the moment cause I actually felt safe! We’ve always loved them but seeing how they’ve cared for their staff and customers really makes us love them more!!!
This was our first visit to the Hillside Farmacy, what a cute restaurant. We absolutely loved the setting, the music and literally everything. Our dinner was truly farm to table, which we appreciate so much. The food was 'dressed up', not cooked to mush or overly seasoned. We enjoyed the sides which were served in small iron pans, to keep warm and fresh. the colors were vibrant. Another indicator that the ingredients were fresh and local. We loved our dinner, and will be back!!!!
I had the Orzo + Scallops for dinner, together with the virgin Turmeric Soda. The orzo pilaf was surprisingly delectable, and the soda left me begging for the recipe.
Charming old-timey decor, kind service, and a delicious menu made for a great night out at the Farmacy!
Valentines Day dinner
In my opinion my crab cakes were a little dry, but the scallops were done to perfection and the orzo was very tasty. I really enjoyed it and ate the whole thing. The grapefruit margarita was delicious too. Wish the menu was bigger but I guess since making everything from scratch it’s harder to have a bigger menu.
Food here was generally very fresh and tasty , but they were out of several things we ordered and were down to just one dessert- a bit annoying.
The have a great cocktail selection. We had the Farmacy plate and Brussel Sprouts. Service was great, ambiance was great, and food/drinks were great!! I am definitely going back.
