the french fries...wow. if you're a fry connoisseur, you're welcome.
We are eager to patronize restaurants during the Covid situation. Some have maintained the friendly and welcoming environment and scaled the menu to fewer dishes while keeping high standards. Sad to say that Hillside hasn’t. Staff barely greeted us, didn’t offer or bring water or explain the ordering system. Tables were bare of a candle or flower or anything to brighten up the evening. The ordering system is a mess and doesn’t allow you to order additional items. The food was ok- burgers have a big place on the menu, which is surprising given the high level of the previous menu. They were fine, as were the fries. The cheese plate was the saddest I’ve ever seen- 2 or 3 slices of cheese, some pickles, almonds, 1/4 a sliced apple, and some almonds- and a teaspoon of strawberry jam (?). The bar closed promptly at 9, even though our reservation was for 8; the bartender very kindly offered to make us 2 more drinks. The restaurant across the street was blasting live music but Hillside kept on their piped in music which was annoying, as was the EDM Halloween music they played after the music stopped across the street. The whole experience was sad, and not worth our time or money. I’ll remember what Hillside used to be like.
Hillside did a wonderful job of keeping social distance while still giving the “dine out” feeling. The waitress was really helpful, service was prompt, and the drinks were delightful.
The service was excellent but ordering from the online menu was difficult. All of the merch items should maybe be separated from the restaurant order menu. Felt ok safe but our table was pretty close to the one next to us making noise level kind of high.
While I realize Covid has changed everything they really need to find a better system. We were seated and told to order online which was fine. But there was no way to order everything on one ticket - you had to order each time you wanted another drink or appetizer. There was only one hostess and she was always busy and didn’t explain the process very well. The drinks we wanted were not in the menu (scotch and soda) but available at the bar. This took about 15 minutes to figure out and the bartender added it to the menu which was great. Then when we ordered drinks it said it would take 30-35 minutes but only took about 5. We had to place another online order for food. We did and then about 10 minutes later were told they were out of 2 of the 4 entrees we ordered. We changed what we wanted to hamburgers and I’ve been meaning to go back and see if we were credited for the price difference. I’ve been to Hillside Farmacy before (pre-Covid) and was excited to go back but until they find a better way to order and more staff to help it’s not worth the hassle of their system. I gave it a 4 because I loved it so much the first time but feel like they need to rethink their system.
This used to be a great restaurant. However, when I dined there last week, the food was horrible. It took almost an hour to get a luke warm cheese plate. I have to wonder if the food was pulled out of a freezer and warmed in a microwave. I have to doubt if they even have a chef. No wait staff - order on your phone. People busing tables (as there were no waiters) acted completely annoyed to be there. Dirty plates were piled up on the "safe-distance" tables around us. Don't waste your money or time. Soon to be another COVID casualty.
The experience at hillside was completely different because of covid. I understand that time are rough but I’ve been to plenty of my favorite restaurants during covid and had a great experience given the circumstances. You don’t get a server here anymore. And you have order everything on a mobile platform and every time you order something you have pay and tip. It’s such an unpleasant experience and I will not be going back. They also don’t have happy hour and no oysters. Which is what they are known for. None of this is communicated online.
They’re possibly the only place we’re visiting at the moment cause I actually felt safe! We’ve always loved them but seeing how they’ve cared for their staff and customers really makes us love them more!!!
This was our first visit to the Hillside Farmacy, what a cute restaurant. We absolutely loved the setting, the music and literally everything. Our dinner was truly farm to table, which we appreciate so much. The food was 'dressed up', not cooked to mush or overly seasoned. We enjoyed the sides which were served in small iron pans, to keep warm and fresh. the colors were vibrant. Another indicator that the ingredients were fresh and local. We loved our dinner, and will be back!!!!
I had the Orzo + Scallops for dinner, together with the virgin Turmeric Soda. The orzo pilaf was surprisingly delectable, and the soda left me begging for the recipe.
Charming old-timey decor, kind service, and a delicious menu made for a great night out at the Farmacy!
Valentines Day dinner
In my opinion my crab cakes were a little dry, but the scallops were done to perfection and the orzo was very tasty. I really enjoyed it and ate the whole thing. The grapefruit margarita was delicious too. Wish the menu was bigger but I guess since making everything from scratch it’s harder to have a bigger menu.
Food here was generally very fresh and tasty , but they were out of several things we ordered and were down to just one dessert- a bit annoying.
The have a great cocktail selection. We had the Farmacy plate and Brussel Sprouts. Service was great, ambiance was great, and food/drinks were great!! I am definitely going back.
I will go back and I will take friends and give a recommendation. This was great!
Family group - lots of fun!
Great food always.
Amazing! We always love coming into Hillside Farmacy!
Such a great meal, incredible food! We got the Bees Knees and Country Doctor cocktails and loved both! We also got the burger and kale Caesar salad and both were delicious. We can’t wait to come back!!
love the atmosphere and the service. The food was mediocre. Would suggest a vegetarian main course to go along with the meat & fish selections.
Really really poor service. Waited 45 minutes for a cocktail and a waitress to even come to our table. Food was good but not worth the wait.
We had family visiting Austin for the first time. We ate outside. Although traffic was occasionally noisy, the restaurant itself was reasonably quiet. The food and drinks were great, everybody enjoyed it.
At 6 pm on Saturday, it was not busy. Mike was very friendly, showing us a Shutterfly photo book when I asked about the history of the building. Loved the gazpacho, crab cakes and wild boar chop. A rare night out for us (without kids) but we will certainly return to enjoy a daytime meal.
Very historic, quaint building. My server was excellent. Menu is a little narrower than other restaurants for breakfast/brunch, but the items I had were perfect. Price was fine. As this place is east of I-35, it is still convenient to downtown, but without the horrible parking situation.
Went for a weekday breakfast with my SO and had a very relaxing delicious meal. We have been for lunch as well when it is busier but always pleasant and great staff
Delicious food! The restaurant is very unique and filled with interesting knicknacks. I will definitely be back.
The food and service at Hillside Farmacy was great. We enjoyed cocktails, oysters, wild boar chops and one of the burgers. The waitress was great and on spot.
Why only 3 stars? The tables are tiny. I had to hold my oyster over the ice to eat it, no room for the plate. My very expensive (small) purse could only be hung off the chair back and was down on the floor. Lost my fork. Spent most of my meal worrying about knocking over the water. I know restaurants want to make the most of their space, but it was so uncomfortable we won't return and I cannot recommend it.
My two work guests and I had a lovely time dining in this cozy establishment. It was just right for an intimate work dinner. The service was attentive and kind, and the food was delicious.
It had been a while since I'd dined at the Farmacy, and I was pleased to see that they haven't lost a step in any way. It was pleasantly full on a Saturday night, and the service was outstanding. The food, as always, was of the highest quality and featured some really inventive flavors and combinations. Highly recommend.
I will definitely be back again. The restaurant does a great job of making it feel like an old pharmacy.
The food, service, and staff are amazing. Throughout the dining experience, you don’t feel rushed and the ambiance equals comfort. Try the Brussel Sprouts & one of their handcrafted sodas.
The wild boar is not wild boar but rather a pork chop. Wild boar is dark in color a has a richer taste. This was blond and neutral tasting.
Excellent service. Our waiter kept us informed as there were big parti d being served. Everything was excellent: Brussels sprouts, chicken, wild boar chop, although the latter had to be warmed up. Wine choice is quite limited and wines are a bit rough.
Awesome intimate quaint dining experience
Great food and gorgeous atmosphere!! Would definitely go back and recommend!!
Great food and atmosphere. Service was lacking and waitress was not really interested in whether or not we enjoyed our meal our time. Very unique place to have brunch. I would highly recommend for a enjoyable unique place for brunch.
