Hawaii Calls - Marriott Waikoloa Ratings and Reviews
Hawaii Calls has a quiet ambiance in a lovely hotel overlooking the pool and gardens. We were exhausted and decided eating at the hotel was the best choice. Service was great but unfortunately, the meal was not. The tomato salad contained tomatoes so hard that they were inedible. The risotto was good and the tofu dish was very good. In retrospect we should have ordered the all you can eat crab legs, as people seemed to be loving those. We will try again as the convenience and relaxation were appreciated.
We dined during a 50% off entre evening. As a result, the overall cost was reasonable, but the dinner was disappointing. My prime rib was done correctly but was cold by the time it was delivered. Service was slow. My wife’s wine was $22 per glass and mine was $18. These were for OK but not great wines. The outdoor setting is nice and the evening was comfortable, but our ocean view was largely nonexistant because our table was at the back of the restaurant.
There are a large number of Kona area restaurants with better views, better food, better service and greater value.
The service was excellent. The food was very yummy, delicious and satisfying. The wine was great. My husband and I had such a wonderful experience. The setting was perfect. Couldn’t have chose a better place to spend our anniversary. We could hear the soft singing of the musician from above us. Very romantic. And they brought out a beautiful anniversary dessert for us. We are looking forward to spending more special occasions dining there. Thank you to Hawaii Calls Marriott Waikoloa who made our anniversary night so special.
We've eaten at Hawaii Calls a number of times. It's ok, not great, but then again there are few really good restaurants on the Big Island. The crab legs and lobster bisque are my two favorite things from the buffet dinner. I like eating outside and the quiet atmosphere - especially if you go earlier in the evening and manage to get a table away from any large group tables. It's the kind of restaurant we eat at once in a blue moon - for a change in venue and to eat crab legs.
Great meal in our hotel. We were looking for something close but we didn't expect the food to be so tasty! My wife and I loved their greens salad and whole lobster. It was very romantic next to the garden with the ocean/sunset view. We will definitely visit again!!!
We have been eating the crab leg and prime rib buffet here for years but while the price goes up the quality of the food has diminished. The crab legs and fish were cooked dry. The chicken and pork were also not as tasteful as past visits. On the brighter side the Waimea vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly and the prime rib was above average as well as the desserts.
We love the location with a wonderful sunset view but I believe that we will be watching the sunset from our lanai rather than forking out that much for a mediocre meal.
The food was only sub-par. The prime rib was tough, snow crab tasted old. The shrimp was obviously thawed from frozen. The mahi mahi still had the bloodline, making it very bitter.
Worse though, this place has zero shade. The sun made me physically ill. They need to add shade!!!
Service was great, our waiter was quite the character, in a very funny way. Although I expected more with the food wise. I mean $55 for buffet, i get it, theres crab and prime rib, BUUUUT there wasnt much else. Half the things i had to guess what it was cause there was no place card for what the food was.
The best time to go is once the sun has met the ocean, because that sun is brightly shinning on you. But the sunset view was amazing :)
We went on lobster night, a great special! Outdoor relaxed dining, other entrees were very good. When our server forgot a beer, and soup, we reminded him and he brought them quickly and we weren't charged for those items.
Overall I would recommend the Marriott for breakfast lunch or dinner
Beautiful location! A bit disappointed with the Easter Brunch Buffet menu. Shrimp and Ahi Tuna from the sushi side were excellent. Crab Legs were mushy. Fish on the steamed side was overcooked and hard/dry. Salad bar had a great selection of items. They also served Ham, Deep Fried Pork and a variety of Beef (unfortunately we don't eat beef or pork). Omelet bar was nice, however my omelet wasn't fully cooked through. Nice selection of desserts. Overpriced for what it was, maybe that's why the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Our service wasn't spectacular for as slow as it was but then again the tip (18%) was already built in to our bill. Not sure I'll be booking here again soon (we live on the island).
We had a certificate to cover the food - thankfully!!! Waited 10 mins after being seated for any server. Another 15 mins for bottle of wine!! Very limited dinner menu. Placed our order and heard server at next table suggest the lobster, which wasn't listed on menu. Our server hadn't mentioned it. Did change our order to lobster. Nothing else served on plate other than 2 lobster tails. She hadn't suggested any sides. Other table had sides. Very disappointed in this Marriott restaurant.
We first had breakfast. Very good. A few days later we went for dinner. Very limited menu. I ask if this was the only selection, is there any other food. Our sever seemed to be offended. Why, that's not her doing, that's management. I got nothing. I ask again and she said no other food. Only when I metinned, "this is so limited and she can't find anything she wants, she picked this place and is paying, " only then our server said, "well, there's the bar menu. "
It may be policy but it should not be so hard to get to the fact, yes there is alternative food. Mom saw the kalua pig sliders and was happy with that.
Dad gor the boil, and it was mostly cold. Terrible to serve cold food. I got the special Asian style Opacka. It was overall ok, mashed potatoes were cold.
Service was very slow after the menu fiasco. Then the server seemed taken back that we actually wanted desert. Then she brought the same menu from the bar, to show desert. Had mom settled for something from the regular limited menu, then seen the "other " menu later, there would have been an confrontation. As it was we were very nice and left an appropriate tip. The server was short, kind of sticky, brown skin, grey hair of several shades as it had grown out.
The view and ambiance was great but service and food lacking. Too bad.
The seafood buffet that is regularly held every Friday and Saturday evening has always been our top choice for all special occasions. From birthdays to anniversaries and Christmas dinners, we have been coming here for a couple of years now. This month, we set out to celebrate several things: our 7th anniversary, valentines dinner, a work raise, as well as a congratulatory dinner for getting pregnant with our second child! I set up a reservation through Open Table for a party of 3 at 6:15pm, this past Saturday night. We arrived five minutes early for our reservation but upon checking in, the hostess claimed she could not find us in the computer. I proceeded to show her the confirmation number in my email stating it was confirmed and booked, as well as another email saying you looked forward to seeing us. She said sometimes it doesn't show up. That is UNEXCUSABLE! I had originally asked for a sunset view to celebrate a new beginning and ended up taking a behind the columns table in a back corner with hardly a view of the clouds, as if being locals wasn't good enough for a front seat view. Although this was very disappointing, the service was great and our waiter (I truly wish I could remember his name!) was beyond amazing and made up for the disappointment. I'm not too happy with the mixup in our reservations on what was supposed to be a very special night, with no other effort except for the outstanding waiter, to make up for what I see as YOUR mess. To add salt to the wound, I received an email later saying we were marked as a NO SHOW. Were we just thrown on the side because we were locals? You tell me, but that's sure how it felt.
We had a guest in town and, having been to this restaurant many times before, thought it a good idea to go again. But, this is the first time I can say that I hated the Valentine's Day Special and dining here! The 5 course meal left me hungry as the portions were so small that I could hardly believe they wanted to put anything on the plate! For $69 I thought the value was maybe $25 at best! My friends thought the same. The tasty soup was less than 1" deep and there was no bread to accompany it. The server didn't ask my guest if he would like another glass of wine. The salad said, "goat cheese" and it looked like maybe they ran out of it. My salad bowl had a SMEAR of goat cheese so thin, that it was transparent. As the meal was $252 for all of us, I wanted to find the chef who put this together and tell him how awful it was. He went home early. The service? Even though I asked about bread, none was brought or offered even for additional charge. The MOST DISAPPOINTING MEAL I HAVE EVER EATEN and I really PAID A HIGH PRICE FOR THE EXPERIENCE!!!
The food was great, buy it took far too long to receive our food. My wife and went through a whole bottle of wine while waiting. This wouldn't really be a problem I guess, but the server never checked on us or asked if we needed anything. The whole dinner was over three hours. And the tip was already included, so I couldn't even ding them there without being "that" guy. Dont get me wrong, the food was delicious, but more presentation than quantity.
Unfortunately this was a disappointment but the location is fantastic and you might have a better experience than us.
Two families went out for dinner two nights ago. It turned out that evening was the buffet night and I think that might have been our problem. We aren't above a buffet but for $55 each I would prefer to order off the menu and not have something under heat lamps. Saying that lots of people seemed to be enjoying the buffet. In our case a few people at the table were asked for drinks and a few were not. Then a few drinks arrived.... but no others. Then one child's meal arrived.... but no others. When my daughter was done her pasta and her drink a few other meals arrived but still no drinks for 2 of the children. The food was ok but nothing spectacular. In all fairness the adult entrees might be good. In the end we never got any as we gave up and went home.
We did bring this up with a staff member and they immediately gave us a 20% discount. I wouldn't give it a try again as I prefer to be at the Lava Lava anyways but I get the impression that generally it's a better experience then this.
Second time ive been there with friends and both times we had the same waitress. And both times She kind of has an attitude and shes really rushy. She kept coming back every few minuets trying to take our plates that we were still eating. I dont know her name but i would not want her as my waitress again.
I was worried because there were some negative reviews about a buffet? We didn't have a buffet so that was a non-issue. We were the only table in the restaurant - table of 10 of us. So we had great service, the food was good, it was a bit odd being the only table in the restaurant at 6:30 on a Wednesday, though.
