French Market Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We left after being seated for a 7pm reservation. 30 minutes later I still hadn't received the cocktail I ordered and didn't have high hopes for the appetizer either. On the way out, nobody had a clue we were leaving or why. Awful experience. Won't return.
Dinner was good over all 3.5 out of 5. This was homecoming night, but service was still acceptable considering. Our cocktails left room for improvement, 1 out of 4 was good; 2 were OK; the other was off menu - just not their strength. Meal was solid, good flavor. Dessert was good but not great. We will continue to return whenever we're in the mood for good food and good atmosphere. Open kitchen, bar, and multiple TVs make it less than upscale.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at French Market Bistro. We had a 7:15pm reservation and arrived about 10 minutes early. The hostess sat us immediately, which was a pleasant surprise on a busy Friday night. We had to walk through the bar area, which seemed to be at the height of happy hour and had more of "cocktail lounge" feel to it. We were seated in the dining room at the back of the restaurant, and had a combo booth/table. Our water glasses were filled and our waitress came to the table quickly. I'm pregnant, and I was starving so we were ready to order by the time she got there. She adjusted easily to our fast pace, taking our order and asking if wanted bread. (Of course we wanted bread.) It came out within a minute and was perfectly warm. Our appetizer of Firecracker shrimp and my bleu cheese wedge came out within 5-7 minutes of placing our order. Both were absolutely delicious. The shrimp were butterflied with a light drizzle of the sauce, so it wasn't overpowering. The bleu cheese wedge was a generous portion (ordered as part of the Steak House Dinner entree). Within 15-20 minutes of our initial order being placed, we were presented with the 7 oz. filet with grilled shrimp and my husband's focaccia pizza. The steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp really added to the flavor. My husband loved his pizza and was surprised at how big it was for the price at a nice restaurant. He even had 1/3 of the pizza to take home. We were offered dessert, but we were too full. Overall, the experience was WONDERFUL. We had fun trying a new place, and we were pleasantly surprised throughout the meal. Most patrons wore "nice" clothes, but there were some tables seated on the patio outside that were dressed more casually. It seemed to be an older crowd on a Friday night, but we kind of expected that with it being so close to the country club.
We have always had a good experience at FMB in the past but last Saturday evening was not so. The waitress did not seem to care about our service and didn't seem to want to be there. We had to ask about specials and she stated that they were still be figured out. She returned later with that info. When asked about being served bread she told us it was be request only yet she had not informed nor asked us if we wanted bread. Within a couple minutes of serving our salads she brought the main course. The room was occupied by a large group with several small children and the wait staff seem to congregate nearby; they were chatting, dancing and singing, etc. We will probably return to FMB in hopes of a better experience but it will require significant improvements for our present sentiments to be replace with better opinions of the dining experience at FMB. It was not the enjoyable, evening dining experience we were expecting
Even though I had made a reservation , we were seated in what seemed to be an over flow room off to the side. It was isolated and very cold. The cocktails were good. The seafood pasta had very little seafood - mostly pasta. Salad and soup were very good. Service was good. Next time I will request we be seated in the large dinning room .
We met some old friends for dinner and the food was excellent. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. The cocktails were also excellent. The only negative comment was that our waiter was not very attentive. My wife had to go find him to get her water glass refilled and after we finished our meal we waited an unusually long time before our bill was presented. In his defense we were talking and having a good time so he may have hesitated to bring the bill so we did not feel that we needed to leave.
We would definitely go back.
We dined out for Restaurant week at French Market Bistro. ( Last year we dined out trying a new restaurant called Table Kitchen & Bar that ended up closing a couple of weeks later. That experience was so disappointing.) So this year we went with an established favorite, French Market Bistro. Three of us chose items from the Restaurant Week menu and my husband ordered off the menu. As you can imagine, it was busy for a Friday night during Restaurant week. My friend and I both ordered the Filet Mignon medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. We had the crab cakes for appetizers. They were excellent. And cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was a normal portion size and delicious. Last year when we went to Table Kitchen and Bar (now closed, no wonder why) the slice of cheesecake that we were served was one third of the size we were served at French Market Bistro.
We have been dining at French Market Bistro since it opened. We love the food and the atmosphere. If you are visiting from out of town, this is an excellent place to dine.
The food was good and would have been 5-star level if the "bisque" hadn't been full of crab shells and, you know, a true bisque instead of a chunky cream soup. Bus boy was great at refilling water glasses. Waitress was poor. I know she was busy because it was Friday night, but we were left waiting for our check 15 minutes--after she took our leftovers to be boxed. We saw her walking around, but she didn't come to our table until I got up to go speak with her. The food is the star here, not service and not ambience. Far too noisy to easily hold a conversation.
My first comments will cover off on using Open Table for making reservations. The last two times I have made very specific requests on the system and each time they have been completely ignored by the check in hostess station. This trip I specifically asked for a bar table against the wall AND indicated we were celebrating our anniversary.....and even put in the comments....."if anyone cares". I did not expect anything free or anything but a salutation to acknowledge the event might be a nice touch don't you think?
The hostess checked us in and then walked us through the bar, through the main dining room and back to a two top crammed against a wall.....right by the kitchen door. Across from that was a bussing station which a busboy immediately slammed down a bin full of dishes on before we sat.
I proceeded to tell my wife we were not sitting here and walked back up and related my Open Table request. Another lady, an owner I believe, took us to a nice secluded table at the back of the bar. Thank you.
Our server was at first cordial but somehow got requests mixed up or misunderstood and as the meal went on very robotic and hurried in her approach. I asked right off the bat if they had sparkling water and was told yes so I ordered that for our water service. Never came, never mentioned.
We were were ordering a half dozen raw for $6 when our server also told us about "premium" La. oysters with mignonette. I asked how much they were and server walked off and brought those out. Ok. $14 but very good. Eggplant with crabmeat for almost $15 was good although the Hollandaise had no lemon in it. I had 14 oz chop with grits. Wife had oyster Grouper without the salad on top with grits. Chop was fatty and I guess why it is only $20. Grouper was good again with grits.
And with final check we paid and left. Never A mention of our celebration at all. Suggest paying more attention to details, change up the menu.
We came here for lunch and was very hungry. I had to try the lobster crepe, which was rich, but was a relatively small portion, so I was not stuffed. My husband enjoyed his oyster bienville, which I also thought was delicious, and I do not generally like oysters.
Last year the time we ate here was ok. But we have eaten here twice in two weeks to make sure it was the real deal. We had fish both times, veggies, salad and a wonderful fruit dessert. All the food was super. Table in the back and the wife and I were quite pleased. Keep up the good work, compliments to the chef. KG
