The food was consistently outstanding! As was the service!
We hadn’t been to Frank Fat’s for a number of years but decided it was just the spot for a birthday lunch with a friend. Our memory of a fine experience was accurate: we had an excellent meal and enjoyed the setting, redolent of restaurants in San Francisco’s Chinatown—beautiful décor, comfortable seating, individual rice bowls, and tea properly served in a pot. We especially enjoyed the honey walnut prawns, which lived up to their reputation as the absolute best. The birthday person loves that dish above all else and was delighted at the level of flavors, one rather mysterious. I was very taken with the Immigrant Beef, and since we were celebrating a birthday we had to have noodles. Our choice was vegetable chow fun, which came with a nice variety of mushrooms, water chestnuts, broccoli, and other green stuff.
For dessert we had a piece of the famous banana cream pie. Even the banana holdout among us enjoyed his share.
We’ll certainly return in the near future. BTW, there’s a parking garage right next door.
How does anyone not love lunch Frank Fat's restaurant?
Americanized and fantastic take on Chinese food. Most dishes are lightly seasoned compared to typical restaurants which lets the very high quality ingredients shine.
Friendly efficient staffs combined with very delicious authentic food made us drive for 2 + hours just to eat there. Don’t forget to try peking duck.
The shrimp are off the charts. Wash it down with a triple Mai Tai.
Delicious food. Menu items add up. The bill was $120 for two people. Very noisy up front near the bar.
The food was prosaic. The one Frank Fat specialty we ordered , beef/pork dumplings was very good, displayed well. The other dishes were OK but not the best I ever had.
Heard about this place from many people since we moved here and finally got to check it out. The food was really good as was the service. Definitely a top notch place.
Absolutely love it here! Perfect spot to celebrate our son’s birthday. We will definitely be back for more family dinners!
Legendary restaurant. Great Chinese food. Don’t miss the honey walnut prawns and the banana cream pie.
Friend who used to live in town told me this was a must-try. Very good food, great service and ambiance. Combo appetizer platter is a meal in itself.
The food and service were Excellent, as usual. Frank Fat’s is a Sacramento Treasure!
food is amazing but very pricey!!! the honey walnut shrimp is my favorite.
First time at this restaurant, and hopefully not the last. Excellent food and service. Can’t wait to go back.
Overall great experience. Had some timing issues with the food coming out, however they quickly acknowledged the shortcoming and made it right. The food was outstanding and i would go so far as to say the best Chinese foe we have eaten.
Amazing food, fun atmosphere for the entire family
The honey walnut prawns are spectacular! I also recommend the sweet and sour pork. The imperial noodles were terrible. We paid $20 for dry Ramon with meat. Also I would not recommend going on a weekend date during the evening here. It is insanely loud.
Food was delicious! Got the 80th Anniversary special for two! What a deal! The banana cream pie was the best I have ever had! Hands down everything was delicious!
Didn't know we were going to a institution in Sacramento! Not just a typical Chinese restaurant - food was upscale, choices were vast, flavors were perfect. We enjoyed every bite!
We enjoyed their 80th anniversary special dinner priced at $80 for 2 people. Food was wonderful at a reasonable price. We were also impressed that our server asked if we had any food allergies that she should be aware of. Service was prompt and professional and service personnel checked frequently to see if we needed anything. Dinner included horduerves, honey walnut prawns, steak, infinity noodles with chicken and vegetables, fried rice and banana cream pie all in generous portions.
Ended up adding an extra and we were still seated right on time. Cocktails were fab! Appetizers fab! Entrées were fab!
The ambiance at this restaurant is really unique. It has a very old time feel from the 1930’s or 40’s. The food was great. We came for my husband’s birthday, and we were not disappointed. We ordered the combo platter appetizer, duck, honey walnut shrimp, and garlic green beans. The duck plate was the best I’ve ever had. The garlic green beans were delicious and the sauce was flavorful. The shrimp was ok but I wouldn’t order it again because they have other unique options on the menu. Overall, their food was great. I only gave 4 stars due to the wait time. Granted we did make reservations for a Friday night, the wait time between our appetizer and main dishes was long.
Yummy honey walnut shrimp and steak with generous portions!
Interesting and good food.
We went for our anniversary. I made reservations several days before. Where we were seated the lighting was way too bright, I probably would have liked it better being seated on one of the booths. We got the 80th Anniversary deal. The shrimp was amazing, the noodles and appetizers were delicious the fried rice was a little dry but tasty. We were very disappointed in the New York steak, it was very tough, even though it was medium rare like we asked, it was very hard to chew-it was a very tough cut of meat. I would go back though, probably not for an Anniversary but the service was excellent and I would like to try more items on the menu.
This place exudes self-confidence, unfortunately at the expense of taste and careful cooking. Dry, unappetizing Beijing Duck and unusual meat-centric dumplings—specialties of the house—were both deep fried. Clearly, Frank Fat’s has been delivering these dishes the same way for years, and the place was full. But if you seek light, healthful, or chefy Chinese, look elsewhere.
Just as I remember. Outstanding food, Sherry the waiter was fabulous. Beautiful interior designed by Anthony Machado...timeless elegance.
In fact we told the desk clerk at the hotel we were staying.
I have been dining at Frank Fat’s for 50 years. It is a “go to” restaurant when celebrating holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. I have never had a less than wonderful meal.
Excellent cocktails, love the green beans, calamari. Good service. Nice ambiance.
I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE IMMIGRANT BEEF. WE ASKED OUR SERVER IF IT HAD GARLIC IN IT AND SHE SAID "A LITTLE BIT" - IT WAS MORE THAN THAT AND HAD A GARLICY TASTE. ALSO, MY HUSBAND (WHO ORDERED IT) SAID THE MEET WAS TOUGH.
Bar looks fun.
We sat at the back and ordered the tasting menu. Allot of food. Time between courses was hit and miss, meaning allot of time between some and not enough time between others.
I would go back but would just order a normal entry.
We moved from California a year ago and had returned to visit family. We have lots of great places to eat in Nashville but I wanted to go to Frank Fats as it was one of my favorite places ever for Chinese food. We had been so looking forward to this dinner and we were NOT disappointed! We were seated in a booth at the back so the noise l was perfect for us...fun but we didn't need to yell to each other to be heard. The food was delicious as always...best banana cream pie I've every eaten.
Great landmark restaurant. Good lunch specials. Wonderful banana cream pie
Best Chinese I have ever had in North America!
Great food, wonderful service and comfortable ambiance
We celebrated my birthday and we enjoyed ourselves beyond what we expected. The drinks and bartenders were great. We had five in our party and we ordered Frank Fat's Anniversary Special and we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic, the servers were spot on and fulfilled our every request. The Banana Creme Pie was beyond our expectations and we want more. I can't wait to return to my new favorite restaurant.
