In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.

    We had a great spot on the patio and a beautiful sunset. While we waited for our table we sat at the bar and hopped to order a cocktail but the bartender was overwhelmed and too busy and never took our order in the full 20 minutes we sat there. Our waitress, Devon did a great job and once seated at the table the experience was better. Oysters were not in season and we should have not ordered them. Otherwise the food was good.

    Food was outstanding. Service was lacking. Server was very slow. The place was not busy maybe 5 tables of 2-4 per table, and multiple servers in the room. She give us the menu talked about the specials, then disappeared. We had to flag her down to take our order. After dinner we ordered coffee, later ( 5 minutes or so) we ordered dessert. The dessert was served BEFORE the coffee. Coffee was finally served well after the desserts. For the food, I would go back in a heartbeat, but the service was severely lacking.

    Was my friends bday. We went for Happy Hour. Fab drinks and food and very reasonable prices! And they gave us a free dessert for her birthday. I previously went for my birthday as well. Love this place. I will be back.

    Excellent service at a quiet time of day on a Monday. Food was fresh and tasty. Cobb salad was huge. On making the reservation on OpenTable, I had indicated it was a birthday celebration. We received a happy birthday card and two free servings of chocolate pot au creme with candles. The server San Happy Birthday.
