Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves. The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

Although the neighborhood is a bit rough, this spot is a gem. Every server was amazing. Food was good —not a ton of options but definitely something for everyone. Our cocktails were great too. This was THE perfect place for a quick bite and drink before going to The Golden Gate Theater.

The food here is EXCELLENT — the “normal” Greek food but wonderfully prepared. Prices are reasonable and service was very good. A great place if you are in the neighborhood — good enough that we are considering a “special trip” to eat there.

Note that we went before an event at ACT and were on a short timeline. The food and drinks were really quite good. To be honest, I hadn't expected a lot from a restaurant in that area, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's casual, not elevated in any way, but solid prep and served quickly. There were 3 of us and we shared the Caesar salad - which was fine, a pasta dish that had a taleggio cream, pancetta and hen of the woods mushrooms - also good, though very small, and the salsiccia pizza which was superb - I didn't even get mad about the broccoli that was on it, though I generally am unequivocally opposed to it. I had a Lemoncello spritzer that was outstanding, and a glass of wine. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable about the food, and had opinions on wines, all of which I really appreciate. I think this is a great choice when attending an ACT production! ONE IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW - The restaurant validates parking for 3 hours, but if you stay longer than that, you will pay the full-rate, all-day parking price of $38. That was not a pleasant surprise.
