Exceptional(1856)
Price: Very Expensive
• French • Liverpool Street
Booked 3 times today
Critical acclaim has been heaped upon Galvin La Chapelle, a true destination restaurant and with good reason. This fabulous dining spot, just off of London’s famous Bishopsgate is the work of celebrated Chef-Restaurateur brothers, Chris and Jeff Galvin, and epitomises their approach to designing and running restaurants in every sense. Indeed, Galvin La Chapelle has all the wow-factor of Windows with the stylish refinement of Galvin Bistrot de Luxe while carving out its own very unique character at the same time. The interior is truly special, as is the food – cosmopolitan, continental and wholly elegant every step of the way, creative but familiar, special but unpretentious – no wonder Galvin La Chapelle was named Tatler’s Restaurant of the Year 2010 and AA Best London Restaurant 2010.

The brasserie, originally designed by the acclaimed Martin Brudnizki, showcases elegant 1920s Art Deco interiors that include rich wood panelling, brass fixtures and a vintage station clock. Highlights include Escargot de Bourgogne with garlic and parsley butter, French onion soup with Gruyère croutons and Saucisse de Morteau aux lentilles. Complementing these French dishes are beloved British staples, such as Battered haddock with minted peas and tartar sauce and Sausage and mash with onion gravy reflecting the brasserie’s connection between London and Paris. With views of the station’s architectural grandeur, the Eurostar and Tracey Emin’s neon “I Want My Time With You”, St Pancras Bar offers a selection of small plates and features the ‘Press for Champagne’ table-side button.

The brasserie is in a great location upstairs inside the station which makes it an ideal meeting point for my family who were coming from various places outside London. The smoked salmon starter was excellent what you hope for but rarely get simple fresh smoked salmon with additions if you want. One of my fellow diners had the snails which were lovely in their garlic butter. For mains the sausage & mash and fish and chips were two standards done well. The wines were good an excellent NZ sauvignon and a lovely primitivo, the mocktail was good too I'm told

A very warm welcome was presehted by the female restaurant manager. Convivial, willing and attentive serving staff, made the dining experience very special. Also they were knowledgeable to advise between choice of two different sources of oyster. My good lady and I shared cutlets of matured steaks. Medium rare, with sides. The meat was perfect. The rooftop views are very memorable too. The atmosphere was sophisticated calm and gratefully not to hectic or ebullient.
