Excellent! The yellowtail Jack was like butta! Enjoyed the spicy hamachi. Appreciate the friendly and informative waitress who served us. The deep fried birthday cheesecake was delicious! Thanks again for awesome sushi in an unexpected place in the West!

East by Southwest is the best restaurant in Durango. The food is beautifully prepared and presented, service is excellent, and the variety of choices is superb. Always an enjoyable meal, no matter what your choice is. Fabulous Sushi, great vegetarian choices and wonderful fish. It's our favorite place to dine!

The food is great, but the service is always terrible. This restaurant is too expensive for that when there are other good sushi restaurants in town now.

Based on a friend's recommendation, we went to East by Southwest in early December (12/9). The restaurant was full with people enjoying their dinner and having lively conversations. It was an excellent first impression at the door. The service and food, however, were less than par compared to other reputable Asian or Asian fusion places I had a chance to experience. For instance, my Chirashi came out almost an hour after other dishes for the people at my table came out...followed by the wait staff completely ignoring you. The taste and presentation were less than impressive. I gave it another chance this time, and my experience has significantly improved compared to the last one. I may give it another chance, but this is just a hot spot in a small resort town.

First time here in a long time and the experience was awful compared to prior visits. Server was sub par, one in our party received his steak entree and had finished it 10 minutes before the rest of our meals arrived. Shrimp Udon was awful. Way too expensive for such a sub par experience. We also weren't given the cotton candy at the end of our meal.

This was hands down the worst $300 meal I've ever had. Good sushi, but the experience was overpriced and very disappointing.

We got a reservation and were seated precisely on time. This was a misleadingly auspicious start.

The service was slow and infrequent, and our server lacked knowledge of the menus. It took almost 15 minutes to get waters and we hand to grab our own menus. It was almost 30 minutes before we got our drinks. More on this later.

The food was pretty good, and the fish in particular is very nice. Stick to nigiri or sashimi--the rolls are overpriced and underwhelming.

The problem with the food was that the meals came out at very different times or not at all. Of five entrees, the first came out on the heels of the apps and the fifth never came at all. We asked our server to check on the meals several times, and eventually told him that we had to leave soon. His response to our disappointment was "have you ever been here before?" I had. And I have also been to sushi restaurants elsewhere in the US, Japan, and several other countries. Literally no other sushi joint, fancy or humble, has failed so abjectly at serving food.

We eventually got a $300+ bill and had to ask them to remove the last entree that never came. They comped $25, but were never apologetic about the timing and quality of service. The manager was actually a bit rude.

Bottom line: good sushi, but that's about it. Poor service ruined an expensive experience. This place just isn't worth the price tag.

The best restaurant in Durango and the best sushi I have ever had, including trips to Japan. There is a super creative menu with excellent choices for vegetarians and fishitarians. It's great!

Nice atmosphere, attentive service. Food was tasty and plentiful. Value was fair. Noise level was much better than the first time I visited. Perhaps it was the table location or day of the week (Tuesday). Nice change since we wanted to converse and had no problem doing that. I would go back and recommend to others.

Went for happy hour in a very busy night and sat at the bar. Great service and great happy hour food and drink specials- not just the usual California roll and edamame. Consistently good!
