Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Escuela has resurrected a piece of Oak Hill history that seemed destined for the bulldozer. And, while breathing new life into the site, have just happened to create one of the most exciting restaurants in all of Austin, and beyond. Overall, our experience was fantastic. A pre-dinner walk through the extensive urban farm – a true oasis- gave way to wonderment about how they could get many of the plant varieties to thrive under the tough Texas summer. That was our first clue that our dining experience would be something special, and we were not disappointed. Escuela promotes as Tex Mex but it is so far elevated beyond what we may think of in that category that it might be more aptly described as Tex Mex inspired. The creative fusion of untypical ingredients, styles and flavors into traditional dishes found us getting excited with anticipation as we waited on each dish. Our dishes included the queso & guacamole starters, the blue crab flouta, the corn rib elotes, and the smoked Texas wagyu brisket fajitas. All dishes were most excellent. For cocktails we enjoyed a Rojita Fresa, a carbonated take on ranch water; and the Old School, an excellent take on an old fashioned using “brisket fat-washed bourbon”. Wow! For wine, we tried a glass of the Escuela branded red blend and Mexican red blend. Both were delicious. Long before the site became derelict due to neglect and abandonment, it was once an elementary school but more recently (20+ years ago) a place where our families would go during the holidays to shop, to visit the annual pumpkin patch, run through a maze made of hay bales, and buy Christmas trees. Many fond memories were made there and now I feel many more are to come. As a long-time Oak Hill resident, we couldn’t be happier for Escuela, and for us, and we so look forward to witnessing your future success from our seat at your table.

Great place. Loved the beef and chicken fajitas. Service was great, our server was excellent! We will definitely will be going back.
