Café Bleu, in San Diego, serves mouth-watering modern French and Latin-inspired cuisine in its relaxing and atmospheric restaurant. The artisan cheese plate of the day laden honey comb, dried fruit salpicon and crostini and the mussels mariniere sautéed with white wine, butter, lemon, garlic and shallots made sensational starter plates. Some of Café Bleu's specialty entrées include the rajas and shrimp with Spanish chorizo, sautéed jumbo shrimp, roasted corn and pasilla rajas in crème fraiche, the wine-braised chicken coq au vin with roasted pork belly and potato gratin and the filet mignon au poivre in a tri-color pepper crust and peppercorn demi-glace, all of which are perfcetly prepared.
Café Bleu's brunch offerings are wildly popular, including the classic croque monsier sandwich with French ham, gruyere cheese and béchamel sauce and the brioche brandy French toast with maple syrup and strawberries
Exceptional food and service. Our server, Grady, is easily one of the best servers we've had. He knows the menu and is very attentive.
My favorite place! This visit was with "the girls" and we were all very pleased.
Exceptional food and service!!!
A wonderful find!Food is excellent and wait staff friendly and helpful.
Great service & excellent food. Only downfall the noise level is horrible!!
My girlfriend and I ate at Cafe Bleu. I'll give you the positives and negatives.
We'll start with the positives. The restaurant is cute and in a good location. Prices are fair, but I'd probably give it 3 dollar signs instead of two. The cheapest wine on the list was very good. I also thought the service was very pleasant and efficient.
Now the negatives. We visited their website and saw that they offered a Prix Fixe menu for $21.95 with a wine pairing for $15.95. We asked for that and was told by one gentleman that the Prix Fixe menu is only offered on Sunday. If you click on their website's "specials" link, it does not mention that the Prix Fixe menu is only on Sunday. While the first gentleman said that the wine pairing too was on Sunday only, our waiter said they had discontinued the wine pairing although "we know pretty much what wine pairs with which dish". Okay fine, but again no mention of the wine pairing being discontinued on the website, and there was even disparity between the two gentlemen as to whether or not it was offered at all.
Now on to the food. We started with French Onion soup. Pretty good, but there was a "turkey stuffing" like flavor that I didn't love. Out of fairness, my girlfriend didn't pick up on that flavor and said that it was "not bad".
I had the Coq au Vin. I didn't think that the flavors were that great nor did they come together properly. Seems like it could have used some/longer marinade and the spices seemed a bit off to me. It also came with a potato and cheese side that was above average.
My girlfriend had the Steak Frittes. The steak was cooked properly but was a bit tough. I do understand that Hanger Steak is far from Filet Mignon, but it could have benefited from some marinading, or maybe they did that. The fries were just fine.
I didn't hate Cafe Bleu, but candidly I doubt that we would return.
Glad we visited Café Bleu!
Food was delicious (we had the steak frites & duck breast à l'orange) and the service was excellent (thanks Ric). The selection of wines by the glass is very good.
Hd a great Sunday Brunch birthday celebration. Service and food top notch. Great French onion soup, Blue burger.
I consider Cafe Bleu a lucky find, especially for getting together with a friend or small group. The food and wine are very good, a charming ambiance, friendly and good service, price is right, and it is open more hours and days than a lot of restaurants.
always a great spot, for great food. New server, who I do not think has the necessities to work in a restaurant of this quality. Better suited for a beer bar.
First of all: my confirmation was for 6:30. When we got to the restaurant they had it in their system for 8:30. They did do their best to accommodate. Thumbs up to them.
Always a great meal. Our server, who was new, does not seem to fit the type of restaurant that Cafe Bleu is. He seems more suited for a beer bar. Nice person, who tries, but over his head.
We love Cafe Bleu- we stumbled upon this place by accident and discovered a fantastic gem!!
The service is on point, professional yet friendly, helpful with our wine preferences. The food is amazing! We loved everything but have found escargot not very tasty at other places. Cafe Bleu's is wonderful. Everything we have ordered from the salads, entrees, appetizers, desserts is delicious. Go pay them a visit!!!
We have enjoyed many meals, both lunches and dinners, at Cafe Bleu. The food is outstanding and the service is friendly and professional. One of the best "value-for-money" restaurants in San Diego.
We dined here for our anniversary. We have eaten at Cafe Bleu many times and have never had a bad experience. The service is attentive and unhurried. Our waiter made some great menu suggestions and was very knowledgeable regarding their wine selections and what would pair well with our meal.
Great little place. I have dined here now on four separate occasions and the food is great! You can't beat great food + bottomless mimosas!
It is fun and varied decent food. Brie en Croute is something I have not found in other SD French restaurants. Their smoked Mac n Cheese is great.
Lovely place, great for nice dinner and get-together. I had wine, salad and mussels, which were excellent; my companion had beer & hanger steak, done exactly as she requested it, and said it was also excellent. Not a huge menu, they clearly focus on what they can do well, but there is sufficient choice for all members of a group to find something they will like.
We went here for my birthday on Saturday and it was not the dining experience I expected. The cafe is small and smelled like a very old building. The inside could use a good renovation. These things would not necessarily be a deal breaker for me had the food been superb and the service friendly. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The food was okay, but nothing to rave about. The atmosphere was the worst part for me. It seemed like no one was happy to be there, like the whole restaurant was in mourning. I don't think anyone smiled the whole time we were there. Overall the experience was depressing. I will not be going back.
This place is always outstanding!!!! Food is on point, service is excellent, cute and upscale setting!!
Excellent all around!!! Grady provided exceptional service. All his suggestions were spot on from the wine pairing through dessert. We'll definitely be back. Thank you for a very nice evening out. You're our new favorite dinner spot.
Great food! ! Cheese plate and bubbly went great together. Dessert, appetizers and main entree were great! The price was a great deal as well. Servers were friendly and kind.
We were in town for a quick visit and decided last minute to try Cafe Bleu. Great decision.
This particular night they had a "date night" special of two meals from a limited list and
a bottle of wine, Verdiccio, for $49.50. The wine alone was listed at $38.50 and well priced
at that. Food was great, service was great and an unexpected bargain.
We will be back!
We have been fans of Cafe Blue Bistro for several years and enjoy the food and the service. The last time we were there we found the food, service and the noise level terrible. We also felt that the menu prices were higher and not worth the additional amount.
this is a super restaurant. The food is top notch, great sauces, great tastes and very un American. everything I miss in US food.
Food was en pointe, delicious and very creative! The hardest part was choosing what to order...so many delicious possibilities! We will definitely be back!
Tried this restaurant for the first time. Food was very good as well as service. We got there early (5:30 reservation) so very few people mid-week & quiet. The wine list was strange; lots of blended wines; not a fan. Bread was mediocre. Would rather spend more money & get better value somewhere else.
So perfectly quiet - we could TALK to each other & be HEARD!
I took my parents here for father's day brunch. The crab benedict was amazing! My dad ordered the Bourbon French Toast, which was tasty but could hardly taste the bourbon. My mom had the traditional eggs benedict. She enjoyed it very much. Bottomless mimosas were great! My glass was never empty.
Our waitress on Saturday, June 18, 2016 was fantastic!
A very pleasant atmosphere. And we had a first-rate waiter. But the food is quite ordinary.
Cafe Blue is a "hidden treasure." The food is outstanding and the service is always friendly, attentive, and professional. You are always made to feel welcome. Excellent value for your money. This is one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego.
Delightful service and cushy chairs at the window for lunch. Mimosa refilled often as others had noted. Croque monsieurs are one of my fave French dishes. This one was not so good. The ham, cheese and bread were good, and it was served hot... but the beautiful broiled bechamel sauce was missing. I loved the atmosphere here, and would have liked to try a crab dish, just not with eggs Benedict. Cozy decor. Would have liked to have seen French onion soup on the lunch menu
Had a lovely date-night dinner with my husband. The table was next to the front window so was a great location for people-watching, had we been so inclined. We chose the date-night special of two meals and a bottle of wine. I had the pork chop with roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes. The pork was moist and delicious. My husband chose the Coq-au-vin and loved it. We will definitely return.
Disappointing wine list...For a French inspired restaurant very few French Wines
Food was ok for the value. Beef Bourgogne was to salty probably from the sauce sitting on steam table reducing to long.....The canopies were tasteless and the the Steak tartar was done in a sweet balsamic , why mess with steak tartar with sweet balsamic?? Serve it the right way with dijon and capers.
Duck Confiet was fine. Our server was very good and attentive. I feel Cafe Blue could be so much better if they stop trying to hard to be Pacific fusion French...
Great as usual
We absolutely loved this space. From the moment we walked in it felt inviting! I took 2 of my friends for a business dinner there. It was a great spot to be able to talk. The food is amazing. Must get the crab dip. The dessert wine was also yummy!!
I was celebrating my birthday there and the food was amazing. The wine I had from their spicy list was amazing and overal we had a great time. The waiter was very nice and accommodating when my friend didn't care for her entree and got something else and we appreciated that.
This place has such good food for such reasonable prices that I am shocked it's not always crowded. It may be San Diego's best kept secret at the moment*.
The food is pretty traditional French cuisine, including coq au vin and beef bourguignon. Many of these dishes require long preparation (overnight slow cooking), so the flavors are really developed. The French onion soup is one of the better ones I've had in San Diego, which is to be expected at French restaurant! And of course, just like in Europe, one can order a cheese plate for dessert.
The service, too is usually impeccable. It's the service I would expect at a much more expensive restaurant. (So, remember to tip based on service, not the bill total!)
*Okay, so the actual big secret is that they have Sunday night pre fixe menus for $25 (and I think it's $40 with wine pairing). But for this reason, it gets pretty crowded. Also, I hear they have a good brunch, but also expect it to be crowded. If you want a romantic, quiet, private date, just come here on a weeknight.
I had the eggs Benedict and my friend had the avocado Benedict. Both were very good. The eggs were cooked perfectly. My friend is from France and she loved the hollandaise sauce. Very creamy with a hint of lemon.
