About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
Welcome to a taste of history!

Denver’s original steakhouse, The Buckhorn Exchange is located in the city’s oldest neighborhood, just 5-minutes from downtown Denver -- with a light-rail stop right across the street. This National Historic Landmark and Western Museum has been serving the finest in Old West fare since 1893.

Prime grade beef steaks, buffalo prime rib, elk, salmon, quail, game hen, and succulent baby-back pork ribs are just some of the marvelous offerings on the Buckhorn menu. Exotic appetizers such as alligator tail and buffalo sausage are available, and no dinner is complete without the house specialty, Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For lunch we serve up a lighter fare including our renowned Grandma Fanny’s pot roast sandwich, enormous beef and buffalo burgers and more!

Well worth the experience. Being in a building that has been around that long is worth the effort alone to visit. The staff was excellent and attentive. The food was equally good. I will be back next time I am in Denver.

Both me and my friend thought the Buffalo Bill cocktail tasted watered down and had no alcohol flavor. I ordered a Loscano Chardonnay but never finished it and was still charged for the cocktail. The horse radish looked like it was sour cream because it had very little horse radish flavor/taste/NO BITE. Talia's food service was excellent except for still charging for one Buffalo Bill cocktail and very helpful with merchandise we purchased. The birthday apple crunch pie ala mode was delish and on the house, which was nice. The Blackened Buffalo prime rib was delicious, cooked to perfection and well worth the price. On the other hand, the l/2 rack BBQ ribs was nothing to write home about, same-o, same-o. I get better ribs at Ruby Tuesday's for less price. Was charged for Beans & Chips (?) which I think should have been mushrooms and onions.

Thanks for visiting us, Laura. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the service you received as well as the complimentary birthday apple pie. We apologize for any disappointment with the horse radish and the Buffalo Bill cocktail as well as it not being removed from your bill.. We take pride in our food quality and are disappointed to hear that we didn't meet your expectations fully this time around. Your feedback is invaluable to us and we'll certainly pass it on to our culinary team for improvement. We hope to welcome you back soon and provide a better experience. Best, The Management Team at Buckhorn Exchange

The sauce with the grilled duck appetizer was outstanding. We had the grilled bison and grilled elk tenderloin special. Both meats were very good. I did not care for the peppercorn sauce with the elk. Grilled bison was great. The wine list was very respectable and priced about where I would expect it. Food prices seemed a bit on the high side but you are paying, in part, for the exotic nature of the meat, for the history of the restaurant, and the ambiance.

Our evening began with soggy salad and cold, stale bread and a side of somehow frozen and whipped butter. The alligator bites and Rocky Mountain oysters were rubbery and mostly batter. So-called special was a thin cut, overcooked ribeye with no seasoning. Needed A1 sauce for a dry 75 dollar steak. The plate was garnished with an unappetizing handful of frozen vegetables boiled to a grayish mushy consistency plated without seasoning as well. The star of the evening was the mashed potatoes. Served warm and well seasoned unlike anything else on our plates. The buffalo prime rib was decent, however, lacked any type of crust or seasoning. While this was fine piece of prime rib to be served at a buffet, or cafeteria, it certainly doesn’t warrant the price tag being comparable to its Prime beef counterparts at other restaurants known for serving excellent prime rib on a consistent basis. Knowing the history of this restaurant set us up for a huge letdown when we finally came in to see what all the fuss was about.

Had the elk bison special. The elk was fantastic. the buffalo was over-cooked, tough with a taste of burnt. It was more than I could eat so I left happy and full. Did not bother to mention the overcooked meat. Highly recommend BE. This is comment is only to pass on to chefs...
