Denver’s original steakhouse, The Buckhorn Exchange is located in the city’s oldest neighborhood, just 5-minutes from downtown Denver -- with a light-rail stop right across the street. This National Historic Landmark and Western Museum has been serving the finest in Old West fare since 1893.

Prime grade beef steaks, buffalo prime rib, elk, salmon, quail, game hen, and succulent baby-back pork ribs are just some of the marvelous offerings on the Buckhorn menu. Exotic appetizers such as alligator tail and buffalo sausage are available, and no dinner is complete without the house specialty, Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For lunch we serve up a lighter fare including our renowned Grandma Fanny’s pot roast sandwich, enormous beef and buffalo burgers and more!

The Big Steak

Steak Dinner Our Specialty There is an old sign on the north side of the building that says 'Steak Dinners Our Specialty.' The same legend was also found on old menus and newspaper advertising. In keeping with this tradition, the Buckhorn Exchange offers large-portion steaks, intended for two to five guests. The steaks are cut from our New York strip loins, with the tail removed and all but a very thin layer of the fat cover. Cooked large like this, a lovely crust is formed and most agree that is the only thing better than our steaks that are cooked for one. Your steak is carved tableside and served with a sizzling crock of sautéed mushrooms and onions. Of course, soup or salad and side dish are included as with all our dinners. Additional cooking time is required

I don’t know that I have had better service to be honest. I was with a group of 10 and there wasn’t a time our drinks went below half full. Food was prompt cooked properly this was a great experience!

Steak was not prepared how we asked - was very rare and cold. Server was nice but often got items wrong, especially cocktails. Extra staff was accommodating but was often reaching over us and getting in personal space. Not accommodating to dietary restrictions (no veggie options besides small side salad). Overall, thought this place was overrated and outdated.

If you want a unique experience and different meats this is a good place to go. We got a couple of different meats at our table and the elk, bison and steak were cooked very well but the salmon was over cooked and dry. The sides were good but not remarkable. We would go back again if we were with someone who wanted the experience, but it won’t be somewhere we go out of our way to go again.

The Buckhorn Exchange is my Favorite restaurant to dine at in Denver due to its history, variety of delicious Wild Game meals and unique ambiance and decor. The fact that there are hauntings in the women's bathroom make the mystique of the oldest restaurant in Denver even more intriguing. Try the Bison Prime Rib, Elk and Colorado Lamb Chops or get a wild game combo or sampler platter! I'll be back soon!

Food was just ok. Not worth the price. Supposedly it's under seasoned because that's how the pioneers did it. I wouldn't go back by choice. Except maybe for the Dutch apple pie with that butter rum sauce and vanilla ice cream. That would be worth trying again. Also the wait staff was over zealous and kept trying to take my plates while they were still full of food.

We requested upstairs seating in our open table RSVP. When we got there they informed us that the upstairs was not open and seated us downstairs. Later during the meal I took a walk to the downstairs “facility” (lavatory) and I was directed upstairs which was open and fully staffed with PLENTY of seating. Service was great. My meal of babyback ribs was dry and tough. I make baby back ribs at home that are MUCH better. All and all, I personally feel the BHE is a novelty you should do at least once. We had fun but probably would not be back. Note: I’m not a red meat/game food eater. We went at my wife’s request for her birthday. She enjoyed her bison prime rib. Peace. Out!
