AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

Great birthday experience food has been better
Went here for lunch and was encouraged to try the Drugstore Burger, since it’s known as a popular favorite there. I’m sorry to complain, but I wasn’t impressed. The burger meat seemed a bit tough to chew, not moist (ordered medium-well, but it was past well done). The bacon on the burger also seemed very thick, overcooked, and tough to bite through and chew. You needed a knife and fork to eat it because it falls apart and slips out of the bun when you pick up and bite. I didn’t taste any seasoning or salt on the meat, and there was no flavorful sauce. It was bland and messy. The waiter was nice, but I did have to wait a very long time for my check and actually had to ask for my check after dozens of staff zipped past my table, where I had set my checkbook on the edge as a polite signage of “I’m ready to go!” It was uncomfortably cold in there. I just didn’t feel comfortable or cozy and wasn’t able to enjoy my meal or dessert. The dessert (apple empanada), much like the burger, was nothing to rave about. The view of the Torrey Pines Golf Course at the Lodge was what drew me here. Still glad to have yet another foodie adventure. Maybe I was just having a fussy day. It was a loud and busy lunch hour. Business was booming for them, so that is always a good sign, and perhaps I just made the wrong menu choice.
Terrific unhurried service with food that is well prepared and very satisfying. Good choice of entrees. Our table greatly enjoyed duck confit and scallop risotto.
Tasty citrus salad. Free range chicken was flavorful and moist. My wife's shrimp appetizer was smokey and basically burnt tasting....unfortunate. Her scallops were cooked perfectly. Nice half bottle of pinot noir to compliment the meal.
Restaurant hostess put us @ small table right by kitchen door, which was in constant use. Room we were in had very few diners so her choice was perplexing. No one asked to take coats. Wait staff were attentative and friendly to other diners, just not to us. Did not refill teapot or beverages. Food quality and presentation not up to restaurant ratings. Had to ask for jam for toast.
Food and ambiance were delightful. Our waiter was detached. Swarming Service was very well executed but the lead waiter was not sharp.
Wonderful evening start to finish. Service and sommelier made the night with amazing food and presentation! Top rating!
Great restaurant with spectacular service. Great for special occasions or no reason at all.
Our holiday lunch was a wonderful meal in a beautiful setting. The attention to detail in the creation of this Arts and Crafts building was very rewarding.
This is a lovely restaurant inside a beautiful craftsman hotel. The ambiance is so quaint and different from the usual San Diego area restaurant. While it isn’t quiet, it is less noisy than many other places. We came in to a darling Christmas tree with live carolers. What a treat!
The food was well prepared and seasonally appropriate. We tend to choose vegetarian or comfort food choices and the menu was quite limited for those items. I would’ve enjoyed some craft cocktails. The prices were quite high. It was about $100/ person, 1 cocktail each, shared first course, two mid range entrees, no dessert.
Excellent and polite service in a beautiful quiet setting!
One of the scarcest finds is a creative gourmet breakfast. Mostly great chefs concentrate on dinner. This exceptional find is a Special Occasion Breakfast which will be as memorable as a fine dinner engagement. The lemon ricotta pancakes are ethereal served with fresh homemade raspberry puree. The chicken apple sausage is sophisticated. The apple-bran-spinach muffin merges healthy ingredients into the most delicious muffin top you ever tasted. The setting is full linen, fancy dinner class, with a choice of elegant indoors or a gorgeous Torrey-shaded patio. Don't miss touring the hotel which is an architectural gem. While this is more expensive than your typical breakfast, it is less expensive than your typical gourmet lunch or dinner, and every bit as memorable. Actually it's only slightly more expensive than Great Maple, to put it in perspective; yet this qualifies as Fine Dining. All foodies should check this out!
Best restaurant in town. Always good impressive service excellent good
A.R. Valentien is always special and always delights. The food is wonderful. They are VERY accommodating for people with food allergies. The ambience is unique and beautiful. Highly recommend.
I noticed that the service has improved and it doesn’t take as long to dine there
Improved tasty food. Improved service. Great sunny day. Nice deck to beach view. Staff was very friendly.
This was a mid Sunday morning breakfast. We have great expectations for dinner after the Holiday rush is over.
Sat on the balcony, great view. Steven G was an awesome server. He made the whole dining experience wonderful.
Great ambiance and all ingredients were fresh. Downgraded because swordfish was very dry and salty with the wrong vegetables. For the price the fish should be good if not great and the food brought out as ordered. Lovely venue but won’t be back.
Christmas lunch with good friend. Such a beautiful venue. Service and food all the way around was excellent!!
Civilized. Very civilized. Attentive and pleasant staff that were knowledgeable and rightfully enthusiastic about quality food. San Diego has a lot of dining options and sometimes it is expensive and doesn't quite have the cost match the quality of the experience. Here does.
A very Happy Birthday!
Hadn't been here in awhile, but won't let that happen again. We decided to stay for dinner after our daughter's choral concert at the Lodge. The concert, the festive atmosphere of the Lodge, and dinner at A.R. Valentien all made for a great evening. The service provided by Steven was outstanding and he pointed us to some delicious dishes, including the beets (who would have thought?), and the swordfish. Winter sunsets are the best in San Diego, so it's worth trying to go a littler earlier to A.R. Valentien and enjoy the view from an outside table.
We have lunch at A.R. Valentien once a year for our Wedding Aniversary. It is pricey, but atmosphere, outstanding service, and the gourmet quality and presentation are worth every penny.
We sat on the heated patio where the noise level was very calm. It was much noisier in the dining room.
The food was excellent
We ate there for breakfast and it was a pleasant experience. Just a little too quiet!
Special menu to celebrate our anniversary. Staff very accommodating and friendly. Food was excellent with a nice dessert dish to help us celebrate. Will definitely be back
This is my favorite restaurant in San Diego. It is always excellent. The food is always outstanding. The view is beautiful and we like to be outside on warm evenings. The wine list is also interesting. This restaurant is a bit expensive but worth it.
We were there for lunch - very quiet, so we could chat away without bothering anyone else. The service was truly outstanding, the food very good, and of course, the decor is just unbelievably gorgeous. It was especially beautiful because of the seasonal decorations!
I was especially interested in the name of the restaurant. The pepper tree piece by him got me wondering, so I looked him up. Amazing information - here at the time of Ellen Scripps, a midwest potter and then an creator of botanical prints. Quite a special person he must have been, and a nice tribute to his memory.
Once seated, the food and service at our table were once again fabulous as was the case for a number of previous visits. My only quibble is with the seating at our table. I am guessing that the hostess may be new, but two things were less than ideal. The first was that when we arrived six minutes early for our reservation she told us that they can't seat us until closer to the time for our reservation and that we could wait in the adjacent waiting area. While I appreciate the table may not have been ready, or the staff may not have arrived, it would have been a simple thing to explain that was the case. After waiting in the adjacent area for 20 minutes, I went back to check on our table. It was clear she had somehow forgotten us. She was otherwise pleasant and we were seated quickly.
Amazing. Really took care of us for our anniversary
Thank you for providing a delicious breakfast with superb service. We recommend the Valentien for any occasion.
Always one of my favorites! Duck was fabulous, and hearty portions.
Best restaurant Caesar!
The food here is amazing and the service is wonderful. It is not cheap, but worth it!
Great birthday lunch on the patio
Always attentive service and food was excellent
Family night out for a nice treat. Food, service and atmosphere were wonderful.
Though we were able to eventually secure reservations at the restaurant, it wasn't through Open Table. The restaurant told us they never received the reservation request from Open Table. Very disappointing on the part of your service.
Lovely Thanksgiving dinner. Excellent food with professional friendly service
Happy to see the Spaghetti Squash and eggs are back on the menu....my favorite dish!
Service is spectacular , the views can't be beat and the food is excellent!
Anniversary and birthday.....they were fantastic!
