A.R. Valentien is the signature restaurant at The Lodge at Torrey Pines, the AAA Five Diamond resort in La Jolla. Executive Chef Jeff Jackson is synonymous with the farm-to-table movement in San Diego and the ever-changing menu showcases fresh market-driven seafood, meats, produce, and dairy products.

The menu offerings at A.R. Valentien are determined and influenced by what ingredients are available at any given time during the various seasons. Popular dishes include lemon ricotta pancakes for breakfast, chicken “under a brick" with braised cavolo nero and shaved garlic for lunch, as well as the chicken liver pâté available for lunch or dinner. Guests have the option to dine in A.R. Valentien's elegant California Craftsman dining room or sit on the tranquil outdoor terrace which boasts stunning views of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

This restaurant could be intimidating at night, but it was just right for lunch. It's located within the hotel, overlooking the pool, golf course and, ultimately, the Pacific Ocean. Dress for the day was golf casual, but at night I imagine more formality is required. The food was great, with an eye towards Middle Eastern preparations and spices. My wife enjoyed the sea bass and I ate every bit of my swordfish. The prices were on the higher side of reasonable, but worth it because of the ambiance and extraordinarily attentive service. We enjoyed a glass of champagne along with a split of sauvignon blanc. Then I saw Far Niente's dolce desert wine and had to enjoy it once again. So while the food was not super expensive, adding in the alcohol really boosted the bill, making it a splurge lunch rather than a very nice lunch. Still: worth it. Would go back anytime!

The food was fabulous and the service impeccable. We brought in our on bottle of wine and when the server was pouring we offered him a taste and in turn he brought us a very nice taste/pour of a reserve cab that was delicious. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling well so we left earlier than intended but it was a very nice evening and a very nice experience. I definitely would recommend for anyone looking for a nice place to dine.

Made a Sunday brunch reservation and advised we were celebrating two birthdays. Seated a half hour late despite reservation and dining area was 2/3 empty. Food was very mediocre (eg frittata overcooked and dry, potatoes and toast hard, coffee warm) The service was atrocious. The server started by asking about coffee service and never asked about cocktails - we asked after he served the coffee. He brought the bill when the birthday girl was halfway through her meal and had never asked whether anyone wanted dessert much less acknowledging the birthdays and before the gifts were opened. The one dessert dish that was ordered was very good. The quality of the meal and the service was much degraded than our previous experiences there.

If you are staying at the lodge it is a nice place to eat but not anything special. The surroundings are beautiful but the food was average.

If I recommend AR Valentien during the Farmers Insurance Open I would tell them to beware. Made a reservation here after The Grill downstairs called to inform me they no longer accept reservations during Farmers Open. We had to plead with security to allow us upstairs where the restaurant was located. Our fourth member of our party was not allowed the way we came. It was unclear, chaotic and unprofessional the way she was treated and told where to go. It would have been nice for AR Valentien to call us ahead and notify us of the correct path we needed to take from the golf course, into the hotel and the path inside the hotel. Maybe avoid this restaurant all together during that week?

We sat outside overlooking the pool and they brought us a space heater. I can’t remember our servers name but he was amazing!! Seriously best ever. Great sommelier but incredible server. Thank you!

Menu seems to have changed and I miss the old lobster salad. And the soup was flavorless although my guest refused to send back so our fault. For some reason where were seated was very uncomfortable with the table too close in the booth. Wish they served coke.

As always impeccable pleasant service and outstanding tasty food. One observation, the shaved brussel sprouts should have been roasted before putting on the flatbread pizza or baked when the flatbread was baked. Roasting would be the better choice though.

Enjoyed a family birthday lunch with the glorious view, impeccable service, and incredible food. I ordered the cream of parsnip soup and the appetizer portion of butter poached lobster with celery root salad. Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc enhanced the flavors and the mood. Homemade chocolate truffles accompany the bill for the perfect last bite.

Food was partly really bad. Fish was totally overcooked and tasteless. Overall, food lacked ingenuity and was nothing special. Not really worth the price. Ambience is very nice and cosy.

The service is excellent, and we were treated to a lovely appetizer, some tasty vegetables and a small dessert. The lodge was beautifully decorated, and the singers by the Christmas tree were a lovely holiday touch.

The food and service were perfect! Only critique is we asked for a quiet table and at 5:30 with the restaurant nearly empty they seated a table of 4 directly in front of us who were extremely loud, listening to videos on their phone with the volume on! Please do try to spread your guests out even slightly so all can enjoy the wonderful restaurant!

Had a beautiful dinner with our daughter and son-in-law. As always excellent service and great food. BU T....we enjoy bringing wine that we love. Feel the corkage fee of $35 per bottle is a bit excessive!!! Most restaurants in La Jolla charge $25. Would like to see that policy changed. ARV is a lovely restaurant but doesn’t warrant having a 40% higher corkage fee than other local restaurants!!
