About this restaurant

  • Good for business meals
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
Richard Weiss, iconic restaurateur and sommelier, returns to London’s West End with Saint Jacques restaurant. A relaxed and discrete chic bistro setting, Saint Jacques makes the perfect venue for breakfast, a convivial lunch, early evening cocktail or intimate dinner to savour.

Bringing new life to St James’s with classic French dishes and modern creations, the Saint Jacques seasonal menu blends tradition and innovation to suit all tastes – from Richard’s legendary tableside prepared Steak Tartare to a decadent fondant au chocolat.

Saint Jacques’ interior amalgamates the characteristics of a warm traditional brasseries with a vibrant and fresh aesthetic. Key features include the light and airy main dining area, where the clean and organic design coupled with the floral artwork complements the local and seasonal ingredients used. Our French windows then open onto our courtyard, a tranquil oasis of a kind rarely found in Central London.

Dined at St Jacques on a Friday night and we both chose the lobster menu. The food was outstanding - 4 courses with an additional pallet cleanser of sorbet prior to the dessert course. The service was excellent and sitting outside in the square adjoining the restaurant (‘London’s smallest square’) was a delight. It was the perfect place for a hot night in June - intimate and shielded from the hustle and bustle of traffic and people.

On quite a hot day in June the front of the restaurant was quite cool but everyone was seated in the sunny atrium, which of course was convenient for the staff but unpleasantly warm for the diners. First out was the bread and butter; the bread was not fresh and the butter quite salty. For starters we had the meat platter and onion soup. The soup was bland with only a few minuscule croutons that looked commercially made. The meat platter had an enormous quantity of meat for a starter but none of it was of decent quality. To accompany the meat was two small pieces of very burnt toast... my wife left it all. The Menu of the Day main was a lamb dish. This was two large cuts of the most greasy lamb imaginable with a bland sauce, a few spuds and a few mL of pureed carrot. The house red wine was cheap at £6.50 but very warm. We'd had enough, so didn't bother with a sweet. On a more positive note, the service was fine. However one waiter was particularly scruffy and sneezed all over someone's beef tartare... disgusting! He was making up the tatare on a trolley in front of us... we would rather he moved to the kitchen or to the area where his customer was, as he was annoying the diners near to him.

We came for the lobster menu. The starter was all right, the soufflé unusual and excellent; the main course lobster tail had too much butter and lacked taste, but the worst aspect of the meal were the Elizabeth potatoes which were soggy unappetising rissoles and not the roast potatoes the waitress said. The sorbet and dessert were creative and fun. We enjoyed eating in the courtyard. However the noise of the extractor fan and the smell from a table of cigarette smokers detracted from the experience.

My go to st James place for lunch. Set menu is 35 for 3 courses and excellent food. Space is very light and comfy and we sat outside on the terrace this time. Rare to have such a large terrace in central London. Can’t beat it for a lunch with a glass of wine, french do it best.

Love this restaurant, particularly in the summer when you can sit outside in their beautiful courtyard and pretend you are in the South of France
