Afghanistan Khyber Pass Ratings and Reviews
I dont often eat in Hillcrest as I live in North County. However, recently when I was in the area I decided to try Kyber Pass. I will definitely go out of my way to eat here again, and again! This is not a new place. I believe its been there for 15 years. The owners were there and were attentive. The waiter has been there for as long as they have been there. He was wonderful. I was told that the chef is a native of Afganistan. Wow! What a fabulous meal we had. The meat was like butter and the herbs were out of this world. Every dish was cooked perfectly. We experimented with several appetizers and entrees and each one was the best! I heartily recommend this wonderful family restaurant.
Amazing flavors with outstanding service. This Afghan restaurant is the best we have ever experienced. That includes Afghan restaurants in LA, Seattle, San Francisco, France & Germany. Every time we come to San Diego this restaurant is on our DO NOT MISS LIST!
My wife had wanting to take me to Kyber Pass for years, thus my anticipation was high.
We were seated immediately, since the restaurant was only 20% full. Despite the very moderate business, it took my wife and I 15 minutes just get our first offer of water. We got our appetizers 20 minutes after that ( total 25 mins), and we could not help noticing the party of 3 that came after us where being served their main course.
We finally got our main course (45 mins after being seated), and for that wait, the food was average and bland at best. The nan was hard and room temp, the lamb had little taste. Overall, it was one of the poorest eating experiences we have had in 17 years of living in San Diego.
Could not recommend.
Afghani is the original fusion cuisine and Khyber Pass takes it to another level. The food is perfect from the texture of the basmati rice on up. Service was professional, perhaps just over to removed. The decor grates just a bit with over-representation of the famous National Geographic cover on the wall, menu, etc.
Six of us went to Khyber Pass for the first time recently, and we loved it. The food was outstanding, service excellent, ambiance very pleasant. Hillcrest has become our dining go-to area. We dine out a lot, and Khyber Pass is now high on our list of places we will visit regularly.
One of my top restaurants in San Diego. The food is always so delicious and I've never had a bad experience. You never feel rushed by the staff. I have been coming here for years and will continue to do so. I recommend this place to people all of the time. I realize new restaurants are opening up regularly in SD but let's not forget this gem!!!
We had no idea what Afghan food tasted like, but wanted something special to celebrate a birthday. The food was really tasty - took a while but clearly it's made table by table. Servings are nicely sized, a little pricey but for the upscale look and feel, it's affordable for a high end place. Food names implied Indian heritage, altho the nan is more like a tasty focacia. The wait staff could be more attentive, especially as the food takes a while to arrive. But oh so tasty!
We were out of town and looking on Open Table for something ethnic and we enjoy Middle Eastern/Lebanese cuisine. To our delight we found Khyber Pass. We tried the
Garlic naan and their appetizer platter. Very good flavors! I had the khabob platter which was very good. I particularly enjoyed the lamb and chicken skewers which were marinated and well seasoned. My wife enjoyed the veggie platter meal with lentils, pumpkin and other tasty veggies.
All in all a very nice meal for a reasonable price.
