801 Chophouse - St. Louis Ratings and Reviews
I was disappointed mostly in the steak which is suppose to be their specialty. I ordered the filet tornadoes and they were swimming in a sauce that was tasty but unfortunately did not make up for how tough the steak was. We were with my son for a post Christmas dinner since we did not get to see him at Christmas so I didn't want to complain. My husband ordered the strip steak and once we were in the car his comment was my steak wasn't that good, to which I exclaimed mine either. Turns out neither of us wanted to dampen the occasion by complaining. I would not recommend this restaurant if what you're looking for is a really good steak. I don't normally leave reviews unless a restaurant is exceptional or far below my expectations. In this case it was the latter.
The problem with this restaurant is that the extremely high prices mean expectations are very high. Single malt whisky is double the cost of other fine-dining establishments in St. Louis and the wine list costs are off the charts--and often triple or more of retail for the same wines. Two problems made this a less than wonderful experiences. First, I ordered my steak med-rare, my husband ordered his med. My steak was a bit over my preferred temperature, but tasty, so I ate it. When I got home an unpacked our leftovers, I realized that my husband had my steak and I had his. I don't really think there is any excuse for this kind of mistake in this high-end restaurant. When our bill came, it was WAY over what we expected. In trying to figure out the cost, the waiter came to our table and apologized, saying he realized we had been served the wrong wine--which was delicious and which we drank; same vineyard, same varietal as we orders, but twice the price. They did provide us an adjusted bill, but had to wonder whether we would have paid the $280 for the wine--a cost we would NEVER choose--if we hadn't seemed so perplexed. These are errors one should not be subjected to in an establishment that charges top dollar for everything on the menu and purports to be an outstanding experience.
I had an 8 ounce filet that was easily the best steak I have ever had. Literally with every bite my wife and I were in awe of how good it was. When you pay money at a restaurant you want to eat something that is better than you could make at home. This was WAY better. This is what eating out should taste like. A symphony for your taste buds.
This was my first time dining at 801 Chophouse (due to the cost), but I don't regret it at all. I got some very good news and we decided to celebrate by going out to eat! This is not an every day restaurant for the middle class, but we are already discussing returning next year with my family because it truly is a special treat.
We ordered: a new york strip, a ribeye, mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes, and chocolate cake (I can't remember the exact name). Everything was amazing, although the herb flavor of the scalloped potatoes was a bit strong for our tastes. The steak, in particular, was the best we've ever had... As was the cake!
Food was excellent as usual. Chophouse cooks their steaks excellently. The service was very good. Our only hang-up, and it's important to us, is how they seated us. After refusing the table by the kitchen, then refusing the table with decorations hanging down too low on the seat, we settled on the one right next to a large office-party group. My date and I were unable to have a conversation. All along, I could see seats whereby we would have had a nice quiet meal. So yeah, if you have a loud party, it's the right place to eat.
Nick was an amazing waiter. The only one thing I would say, it's dark. I personally loved it! My husband had trouble reading the menu, but still, it was beautiful! He just took a picture and blew it up. Again, I thought it was lovely just a warning for the ones who have a hard time reading. Loved it!!
Met my son for dinner. Had not heard of 801 since I’m not from the area. But I’ve heard of it now. My son and I agreed it was one of the best meals we’ve had. I have eaten steaks and had steakhouse experiences all over the world. 801 is Top 3. Fantastic meal, ambience and overall experience. Recommend a booth in the bar area.
I don't ever complain, however, this was a terrible experience due to the noise level in the restaurant. We had 7 people in our party and they sat us right next to the bar. People at the bar were running into us constantly and on the other side of the table the waiters and waitresses were running into my party. We asked to be moved and they were unable to accommodate our party. Our waitress was great and tried her best to make us more comfortable. It was just so disappointing since we hear such great reviews about this place.
Exceeded my expectations and would return again to try more special items on their menu. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth! Service was excellent and the whole experience was wonderful. This is a high end restaurant and you get what you pay for. Valet parking is a huge benefit for this location.
