A word from Yama
Nestled in the Vail Village, this sophisticated sushi and Japenese restaurant offers an intimate and fun dining experience. With a menu that focuses on fresh fish and a variety of specialty cocktails, this surprisingly chic restaurant fulfills the needs of the health conscious and fun-seeking individuals, and fits right into Vail’s exceptional nightlife.

Yama's Japanese-born chef Ted Minami's traditional approach to the artistry of Japanese cuisine expertly compliments wild child, chef Chris Aycock's innovative techniques. This unique blend satisfies the most discriminating palate and is sure to delight, and is further expressed by the smart ambiance and crimson lit dining room. While patrons dine to the sounds of acid jazz, glances of the Rocky Mountains and conversations about the day's snow adventures can be a perfect reminder of the fact that they are dining in one of the most picturesque ski town's in the world.

Diner Reviews
  • "Not having much experience with sushi, chef Brian treated us to wonderful dining experience. Everything he prepared was excellent. Kelsey was extremely pleasant serving us and explaining what we were trying. I would recommend this to anyone, whether you are an experienced sushi fan, or experiencing it for the first time."

  • "We've been here twice and both times it was excellent. One of our favorite sushi places to go in Vail without all the big names."

  • "Very good service--friendly, funny and prompt. Very good food, at prices that make more sense than the average good-great restaurant. The A/C was broken when we were there, but that is our only complaint. Would definitely go back."

  • "One of the best sushi I have had. Small place with around 8 tables but food is really good. Ambiance is good but music is loud. Server was good had good knowledge about menu. Will recommend this place."

  • "Yama is hands down the best local spot for sushi. Fun, hip, & cozy space with delicious & fresh fish. Unique fish like Colorado Bass & Flounder have turned into my favorites here. Attentive staff makes for the perfect place to take friends or for date night!"

  • "Food is exceptional! Fresh and beautifully prepared. Service is very quick, helpful and attentive. Decor is very nice. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it! Will definitely return."

  • "Love this place!!! Go there many times a year. The staff are fun and friendly. The food is fantastic."

  • "We ordered rolls that we had never had before and were very happy. Food was great. Unfortunately we had to scream at each other to converse. Yama seems to be designed to reflect as much sound as possible. We could hear parts of conversations taking place across the room. When a server dropped a cup the noise reverberated around the room. Go for the food. Take ear plugs. Sit next to each other as opposed to across from each other if you want to talk."

  • "Dinner was fine. The albacore was not great. Prices are typical Vail. I will try Matsuhisa next time."

  • "The chef is definitely a genius. Everything was AMAZING and the service was very friendly & accommodating."

  • "We were seated promptly and the service was good. However the quality of the food was mediocre at best. The chicken appetizer was just a fancy chicken tenders dish that was too dry. The other appetizer we tried was a rock shrimp dish that had too much batter and very small shrimp. The sushi rolls were better. Overall, we weren't impressed."

  • "We loved the sushi at Yama. Be prepared for a somewhat loud, close-knit environment. If you're ok with the opposite of intimate, definitely check this place out, it's worth it."

  • "Great sushi & sashimi & service! Many different flavors. Small place. Make sure you make reservations. One of my favorites in Vail."

  • "I like Yamas food and people but the recorded noise level is overpowering."

  • "Sushi Yama is one of my favorite places in town. I've been to many sushi places all over the world and their is one of the best. Unique rolls, wide sashimi selection, some amazing signature cocktails and excellent service! The atmosphere is amazing too! If you are in town Sushi Yama is a must go place! I took my friends there and they loved it as well!"

  • "I just love Yama, for the sushi, for the drinks, for the service! I'm a vegetarian, and the rolls are so unique and so delicious. My hubby is a carnivore, and he thought the fish was fresh and enjoyed the Randy Roll in honor of the Trailer Park Boys :). The service is so attentive, but not in your face. Be sure and order the Painkiller to start after a long day on the slopes. We'll be back !!!"

  • "If you are in the mood for excellent sushi and want to be satisfied by the food and the price I recommend Yama. If this is your first visit ask your server for recommendations. You will not be disappointed."

  • "This is the third year I have eaten at Yama Sushi - the food is great, the drinks are creative. The first year it seemed like a nice quiet hole in the wall. The last two years it has been very boisterous and noisy. This year I had to nearly shout at my fiancé in order to be heard. A great place for the young active vigorous foodie."

  • "Although Yama is expensive (about $100 pp without liquor), I have to say it is well worth it. The food was nothing short of exquisite. Yama would comfortably rank as one of the top sushi joints in the country! Unexpected to find such a place in Vail!"

  • "Went on referral from a local that works at 2 other high end Vail Restaurants. Small, but lively spot with excellent sushi, with more than adequate non-sushi options. Some unique rolls to go alone with a wide variety of fish. Soup also very good. Fun selection of cocktails and far eastern beers brought in a great crowd of both locals and visitors. Look forward to enjoying this restaurant again soon."

  • "who would think you would find great sushi in the Rockies? Fresh, delicious, innovative. But the prices! It's Vail where all the restaurants are outrageous. But this is the most expensive of all. Over $200 for two of us, with no beverages. It's fun once a year, but not on a regular basis for me."

  • "This place has awesome, high quality, and highly creative sushi, and sushi rolls. The staff are very friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is modern and fun. Their space is relatively small so call for reservations."
    Dined on 10/28/2013
  • "The menu is varied and the fish is good. Some of the sushi rolls have too many flavors which conceal the delicate fish flavors. Careful ordering can get around that. They look after locals very well and is a hot spot for the tourist crowd in ski season."
    Dined on 10/28/2013
  • "Little confusion on the time of our reservation as I made it for 5:30pm and they actually did not start serving until 6pm. Very nice about letting us be seated, but we did have to wait. We tried different dishes this time and they were all really good, a couple were more spicy and hotter to the taste, but that is a personal preference. We will definitely come back because we enjoy eating there."

  • "Decent sushi rolls but would not say they are at the top list of Sushi restaurants in Vail. Some of the rolls were inappropriately rolled causing them to dismantle at touch. All and all a decent all around restaurant."

  • "Sushi to die for. The sushi could not have been fresher and the server was delightful. What an awesome place."

  • "My husband and I brought my father who was visiting from out of town, to Yama, for one of his 1st sushi experiences. He absolutely loved it! (As did we). Kelsey was our server, and made excellent suggestions for the novice diner, as well as the experienced one's @ the table. We tried Uni for the first time, because it was flown in fresh that day, and fell in love with it. Thank you to the wonderful staff of Yama for such an amazing meal!"

  • "Yama is our local restaurant to go to for sushi and sashimi. This time we tried some different menu selection recommended to us by our wait person. We had five selections of sashimi and one roll this time and everything was delicious. We always enjoy dining there."

  • "We stumbled upon this restaurant while trying to decide what to eat. Small eating area, but relaxed atmosphere with fantastic service and food. The wild salmon sushi was the best we've had. Rolls were fun and presented well. We will definitely go back!"

  • "The food actually tasted good, but was really only a taste as portions were tiny. My kdis all were starving when they left and went home to have bowls of ceral. All of our food came at different times and some didn't come at all. There were two waitresses for the whole restaurant and service was therefore nonexistent. I will never go back."
