Diner Reviews
  • "My girlfriend and I went to V. Mertz on a Saturday night for dinner. It is tucked away in Old Market in a somewhat hidden entrance. The area was intimate and Parisian. It made for an authentic dining experience. Our server, David, made the dinner great. He is French and knowledgable of the dishes, wine selection and French culture (of course). We started with a delicious cheese plate according to David's recommendations. I strongly recommend the camanbert. One of the creamiest I've ever had. I had the scallops and wagyu (surf & turf). It was delicious. Scallops were perfectly cooked, and the wagyu was delicious. We finished the meal with a creme brulee which was traditionally prepared and perfectly rich. I recommend having date night here!"

  • "We wouldn't have gone without a groupon to give us the incentive, but are so glad we did! The food was remarkable and it was a fabulous special evening. It was expensive (even with the voucher), but well worth it! We got the 5 course meal and each one was a party in the mouth."

  • "The wait staff and Sommelier are dynamite. We have been going for many years & many of the staff have been there awhile which means it is a good place to work and they like their jobs. They also know the chef, the food and the wines. Our waitress was great at picking out our wines, but also got input from the Sommelier based on us being quite educated about wines. If you like wine to go with your food this a great place to do it as they have many choices by the glass. Going there on a night with a Prix Fix menu is wonderful, because you get to try more dishes. The portion sizes give you a real taste, but you don't leave feeling stuffed after 4 or so courses and the wine pairings have always been spot on and pours are adequate."

  • "We dine here whenever we get the chance. It's amazing! They consistently surprise us with creative spins on classic dishes. The quality of the ingredients is top notch. Our server, Chris, finds the balance between entertaining and serving with style. He is very knowledgeable about the wine list and food, and we always request him when we go."

  • "We received a Groupon for VMertz as a birthday gift. We requested the Tasting Menu in advance with our reservation and were amazed by the attention to detail from the entire staff. From cocktails to the 5 course meal to dessert and French-pressed coffee, our evening was romantic, delicious and we savored every bite and moment. Fabulous wine menu! A delight!"

  • "My husband's meal was wonderful and I had the beet salad and ordered the chicken entree for the main and the chicken tasted terrible….like a hotdog. I always order chicken because there's no possible way to screw it up and boy was I wrong! Everything else was fine….It's a beautiful area and I love the Old Market but I think we can come up with a better chicken dish."

  • "The Outstanding service was only rivaled by the Top Notch Food. Every last detail was taken care of. I was visiting from Canada and can not wait until I can get back. My only disappointment was I did not know to book the Tasting menu 24 hours in advance. I will know for next time. and there will be a next time."

  • "I'd never been to V Mertz before but it was well rated on Google. That they took reservations meant a lot because that's a rare feature in this town for some reason. Anyhow, the food was amazing. I had the roast duck breast, she had the surf and turf. The presentation was nice and the taste was outstanding. Our server was perfect; great timing, right attitude, friendly, and attentive. The ambiance was nice, somewhat dark but plenty of light to enjoy the food and company. I would highly recommend V Mertz, it is not cheap and you get what you pay for."

  • "We ordered the Long Island Duck Confit and the Winter Garden Vegetables, they were perfect for us to share and not overwhelmingly large portions so often found in most restaurants these days. The duck came with couscous, grapes and charred kale whose flavors complimented each other. On the other dish, vegetables were served over a bed of grains that were thankfully not over-cooked and had an assortment of carrots, broccolini, radishes, brussel sprouts and dried cranberries for a pop of sweetness. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the wines and made an excellent recommendation for us. We would definitely recommend to others and dine here again ourselves."

  • "I travel and dine out frequently and without knowing a city or an area it's luck-of-the-draw on restaurants and generally they're okay at best. Well... V. Mertz was absolutely outstanding in every way. My server Jen, was attentive, knowledgeable about food and the menu, and made excellent recommendations. Chef Jon Seymour's dishes were amazing. The cold smoked salmon appetizer was probably the best I have ever had and Jen's recommendation of the True Cod was a revelation. Great presentations and well conceived flavors and textures made this food a standout among restaurants that I have visited anywhere in the last 5 years. Hat tip - V. Mertz"

  • "This was our first experience dining at V. Mertz in Omaha and were not disappointed!. We were greeted by a polite gentleman who immediately checked our coats and showed us to our table Our server was prompt in greeting us and provided us with a cocktail and wine menu. Menu was simple to follow and any questions we had were explained in detailed by our server who had a great command of menu and wine selection. We chose to select an item from all 4 plates and found that each of our selections were very tasteful and presented exquisitely. I found that the peppercorn steak entrée (V. Mertz signature dish) was perfect and my wife chose the Scallops with scallop ravioli. Both dishes had numerous flavors which blended perfectly."

  • "We had a very nice, quite dinner on the Saturday after Valentine's Day. The service was excellent as we're our dinner selections. It is always a pleasure to be treated as VIPs when dinning at V.Mertz! We have never been disappointed with the service or the meal and Saturday was no exception."

  • "My wife and I visited for Valentine's Day. We were seated promptly with coat check available. The bartender made a cocktail off menu, based on my preference for rye cocktails. It was just to my tastes. Our questions about the food were answered thoroughly and when it did arrive, it was as described. And tasted even better! It was quiet, romantic, easy to talk with my wife and everything we wanted for a beautiful night out."

  • "My wife and I have dined practically everywhere in Omaha. V. Mertz is our favorite, by far. This last round, our server Chris was fantastic! He knows the wine list cold, and can offer pairings not only with food, but tailored to suit your specific tastes as well. The chef seems willing to take risks with more adventurous foods, something my wife and I appreciate greatly. That flair, combined with high-quality base ingredients, such as Wagyu beef, creates a fantastic plate."

  • "This is one of my wife and my favorite restaurants in the old market area, and Omaha in general. The staff is very knowledgeable, the food is great, and the ambience is fantastic. It is tucked away and easy to miss, but that's part of what makes it special."

  • "I had never been to V. Mertz so my wife and I chose a special occasion to have dinner (Valentine Day). Our waiter was prompt without interfering, knew the menu, answered questions directly and without being coy and the ambience was terrific. The wine list was good and the food was exceptional. I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family."

  • "Unbelievable ambiance. Hard to find if you aren't familiar with the Old Market. In the very romantic passage way. Parking can be a bit tricky as it can be anywhere downtown. A bit rustic due to the historical hotspot but very elegant. Some will find the posh atmosphere annoying and a bit stuffy. Very fit for foodies. Duck is supposed to be the best in Omaha. I tried it and learned I'm not a fan of duck, but I can't hold that against the restaurant. The waitstaff are phenomenal. Men should wear a jacket or vest. Plan on spending some dough and plan on impressing your date but don't bother taking anyone too picky. Plain isn't their thing!"

  • "We had a great dining experience here. Although it looked very upscale, the entire staff was friendly and professional and really catered to what we wanted. The waiter was pleasant and explained every aspect of our seemingly complex, yet very beautiful meals. I would definitely recommend anyone wanting a nice, fancy dining experience to try this place out. It was a little pricey, but it was worth it."

  • "Had never eaten here before but heard great things. Over all. Wonderful. Drinks were perfect. The food was delicious. The mood and ambiance just right. My only complaint was I dropped my wife early and she got our 7:45 reserved table, I parked about 2 blocks away. By the time I walked in, about 5-8 minutes later she was still waiting for the drink menu. Whomever she asked. Host/Waiter never returned and menu never arrived. Our actual waiter arrived a few minutes later. And he was great. He got the drink menu, and we started a wonderful night out. Must have been a disconnect somewhere in there."

  • "This was the perfect spot for a quiet business dinner. Location was perfect, with an outdoor feel, but enclosed and warm, away from the sub-zero temps and bustling Old Market streets. My out-of-town associate said he'd come back to Omaha just for the peppercorn steak. The sauce that accompanied the steak got rave reviews from all who had it. The prix fixe menu was a great option, as well."

  • "We dined at V. Mertz for a special birthday dinner, and it did not disappoint. The menu was incredible, and for our main entree we chose the ribeye for two, which may have been the best steak I've ever had. The service was second to none, and our waiter was a sommelier. If you are looking for a romantic, quiet, and overall spectacular dining experience, this is your place."

  • "This is a very romantic restaurant with a great atmosphere. Our waiter, David did an excellent job. The pepper steak is fantastic!! The TD niche red wattle pork chops were very good. For desert we shared "The Candy Bar" and it has to be one of the best deserts we've ever had. We've never been disappointed in their wine list. Everybody is so professional. It is on the expensive side, but well worth it. When it comes to the quality of food, service and atmosphere this is the best restaurant in Omaha."

  • "We went to celebrate our anniversary. We loved the romantic atmosphere. Many dishes seemed like the chef worked every ingredient to death: like "look at what I can do!" The menu doesn't describe what the dish will be like, only the ingredients. My soup and chocolate-added risotto were ridiculous. My husband's "deconstructed" tarte tatin bore no resemblance to the French classic. The rolls were ordinary. Good salad, good duck dish, and good crème brulee. Reasonably priced good wine. We paid $160. We have eaten great food all over the world, but this was a huge, expensive disappointment, and we see no reason to return. Congenial, knowledgeable waiter."

  • "This was our first visit to VMertz and we were pleased. Our server explained everything on the menu to perfection and all of his suggestions were on point. The restaurant even made an entree not on the menu that evening at my request. Along with an extensive wine list there are several great beers to choose from. The timing was great, the flavors were fabulous."

  • "The location is perfect in that it is inside a brick ally, away from the noise of the downtown. The service was the best, everything from taking our coats to helping with choosing the correct wine. The food was elegantly prepared with great flavor. The desert menu was only thing that could improve, but it was still very good. This is right place if you are looking for a great dinner for two or a group of friends that want a quiet evening to visit. We will be visiting V. Mertz again."

  • "For a very special occasion, my wife and I dined at V. Mertz in Omaha's Old Market. The food was excellent and much of it was locally-sourced; the service was outstanding; and we loved the atmosphere. It epitomized Carlo Petrini's Slow Food movement, and that was perfect for us. We will definitely go again."
