Diner Reviews
  • "The sushi at UMI is the best of Atlanta. The fish is fresh and delicious of the highest quality. We love UMI "

  • "We had a late dinner @ 10:00 pm. The noise level was loud. The lighting was very low, we couldn't read our menus easily. I would definitely go again. I would arrive early when it first opens @ 5:30. I would decide what I wanted by reading the menu online. Yes the food was that good. The sashimi was better than most places. The rolls are works of art."

  • "Dining at Umi is incredible. We visited for the first time on 3/22 and had Kara as our server. She is so savvy about the menu, very helpful and has a great personality. We LOVED our experience. We tried so many different things and loved them all. We visited again this past weekend and tried several new menu items. Another night of great food and wine. We recommend this location to all of our friends and business colleagues. Be patient because seating is consistently running well behind our reservation time."

  • "Outstanding Sushi that was well presented, creative, and fresh. Top of the line in all areas. Would go back again and again. Extensive menu, plenty to explore."

  • "From the front desk to the sushi bar, you can't beat the service, atmosphere, food and drink. Thanks to Armin , I was able to get the same Saki I had previously enjoyed during my past visit (that same week :) ). Farshid sat with us and even introduced a few items we hadn't tried. All in all,it was a great experience, as always. Thank you for giving Atlanta something to brag about."

  • "This place is incredible!! Unbelievable food, impeccable service, excellent sake menu and great ambience! Note to novices-hibachi is NOT traditional Japanese, just a way of cooking. This place is the real deal, no hibachi. Sushi, sashimi, sake, and Japanese/European/American flare entrees that are out of this world! We would eat here every week if we lived in Atlanta! PS. Have the Otoro caviar-you can thank me later!"

  • "Diners beware. Food is great but their new policy of "no Togo" and no takeout is absolutely insane. We always buy extra rolls to take home, and they literally wouldn't allow us to take the food we paid for with us. We may not go back if they keep this policy, but beware before you spend $200 and can't finish that spicy tuna."

  • "We had a reservation at 10 but waited until 10:30 to be seated. The bar was so crowded it was standing room only. The waitress forgot two items we ordered (app and side dish). We could hardly hear her it was so loud. Staff clearing plates not that friendly. Portions are small- rolls are very small compared to what you get normally. Very disappointed since our check was over $150 including drinks. My recommendation: go to Genki's instead and save yourself $50."

  • "I must say...the sushi was the best I have had in town. It has truly made me a sushi snob. I cannot go anywhere else, because the sushi will not stand up to Umi."

  • "have eaten at UMI twice--and I live two hours away. while I have eaten at many restaurants-- I must say this is the first time I have eaten at a place and I did not want the experience to end. from appetizers to dessert----it was sensational ---just did not want the evening to end told my sister the next morning--wish we could eat there every dinner!"

  • "A friend recommended this restaurant to me. She said it was the best sushi she had ever eaten and I would have to agree; it did not disappoint!"

  • "I love experiencing new places and love Sushi. Not rolls. I left after spending 3 times as much...hungry. I felt as if I had a snack and had 6 courses. Worth the experience but wont return. There has to be a balance. When I go to high end restaurants I expect to get great quality and off the beaten path experiences. I don't mind spending money for food at all. The water glasses are even little. I felt for the wait staff. As soon as you had a sip they had to refill your glass!"

  • "UMI is amazing, this is a complete dining experience. Best Sushi in Atlanta."

  • "A wonderful dinner with great service and delicious food from start to finish. We will definately return again soon!"

  • "Not a place to have a conversation - very cavernous. Staff tends to try to upsell nearly every order - to the point where one must ask servers to stop. That said, the sushi really is the best stuff in the city. Good "to be seen" scene, a lot of eye candy."

  • "Dined at Umi (date night with my Japanese wife).....after dropping our daughter for her first sleep over at her best friend's house. The food, service and ambience was absolutely heavenly. Umi is the best restaurant in town. Kudos to Chef Ito and his wife for running this outstanding restaurant better than the top Japanese restaurants at Ginza-Tokyo."

  • "Absolutely LOVED my experience at Umi. Our waitress was fantastic when it came to recommendations and all three of us loved everything we got. There are so many great and unique options to choose from. My faves were the avacado salad and the lobster bento box sushi roll. I will definitely be back if we can get another reservation. The restaurant is fairly small so they tend to book up quickly, but it's a must try for every Atlantan."

  • "I've been twice so far and have not been disappointed in the slightest. Order everything. The quality of this sushi is impeccable. The sake aioli, otoro caviar, foie gras entree, misoyaki cod entree, the otoro nigiri lightly seared, yellowtail jalapeno, spicy tuna on crispy rice - all amazing. I wish I could afford to eat here every day!!! Chef Ito really knows what he is doing and the servers are all amazing, knowledgeable and so nice!"

  • "Nobu has always been on top of my list for their refreshing scene and creative food presentation. This one tops all that! Chef's Foi Gras & 5A Wagyu were all worth the surprises. Service was superb and outstanding. Too bad, they don't have any other locations outside of Buckhead."

  • "The service is always hit or miss but the food stands on its own and the cocktails are great. One of the bartenders Gabe really makes the place. His knowledge and background means an exciting experience to go along with the traditional and expected Japanese fare. Always up for a challenge, he really goes out of his way to make the perfect paring. Just remember to ask."

  • "We made reservations weeks in advance to get 8pm on a Saturday night - we waited over 45 minutes to get our table. The bar was packed with others who had reservations so getting a drink was tough. Once we were finally seated service was great and our waitress brought us two complimentary appetizers due to the wait. Food came out quickly and was amazing! I hope they can figure out how to honor their reservations. The sushi was the freshest we've had in Atlanta! Try the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and the Yellowtail Jalapeno starters. All of the sashimi was incredibly fresh! The black cod Misoyaki is also a must. Also visit the bathroom for the amazing heated toilet seats :) Don't go at 8pm on a Saturday even with a reservation"

  • "This place was packed to the rim, and good reason for it. Great food, beautiful interior and our service was awesome, thanks to our server Young and those that assisted him with our group of 7. This is a gem tucked in the corner and you would never know it was there if you didn't hear about it and obviously word of mouth is all they need!!!! Can't let everyone know about it bc then it would be impossible to get a seat there ever......highly recommend this place"

  • "Umi prepares the freshest fish masterfully. For a special experience, sit at the sushi bar and order the Itokase where Chef Ito makes the sushi in front of you."

  • "if you have a gluten allergy and want to have a cooked dish- forget it! they will NOT cook anything with gluten free soy sauce or gluten free ponzu sauce. so you are left to basically eat sushi or sashimi. which if fine if that is all you want...so basically 85% of the menu is off limits. I was very disappointed. It is also very expensive."

  • "I come to this place everytime I'm in Atlanta. One of the best sushi places around. Creative food, service always good. Make a reservation, it gets packed!"

  • "We were referred here by a friend and were turned off at first by the crowded bar/waiting area but we were sat quickly with a reservation. Food was great - get the Tuna Carpaccio for an app!! All courses were great and service was terrific. Will def go here again."

  • "Really fresh Sashimi and Nigiri!! Me and my boyfriend went for Valentine's day dinner, we were there around 5:30pm; so most of people did not come yet. We love the environment and services. Also the restroom is really clean and warm. I noticed the hand soap is even Aesop! Would definitely come back."

  • "It has been awhile since a restaurant has truly impressed me with their menu. It's easy to find the latest greatest scene in Atlanta, but rare to have the menu just as equally impressive. This was by far the best sushi I have ever had. Every dish, especially the avocado salad, was stunning in beauty as well as in taste. Good job UMI! Finally something I can brag about."
