  • "The Pit was a great place to take the family. It came highly recommended, and I would recommend The Pit to everyone. We were told to go empty because we would need the space for all the great food, we were told we would "stupid eat" both hands with food. And they were right I found chicken in one hand and a biscuit in the other and had to stop and laugh at myself. We had a wonderful time and the wait staff were very personable and friendly. Great service from the time I made the reservation until we left. We will be back again and again and again."

You may be well known for your BBQ, but the fried chicken is about the closet thing ever to my Mom's home cooking - loved it. The online reservation system worked perfectly, walked right in and was seated immediately."

  • "Reservations via internet super easy to do with fast email confirm-but when our party arrived we were not allowed to be seated until at least 5 or more of the party were there. We were only a party of 7 with one couple running a little late so NONE of us could be seated until they came-we eventually just changed ourselves to a party of 5 so we could be seated. But this took a talk with the manager to accomplish. Once seated the waiter stood over us for our order. We finally asked if we could have a little time to look at the menu as it was our first visit, he left but came right back! In contrast I later had to stop him for the one refill of tea I received. But food was fabulous and was on the table super fast. I intend to go back!!"

  • "Our whole party enjoyed our food, although I did notice our servings were significantly smaller than when I ordered the same meal last month. They were able to seat us immediately - even though we were 20 minutes early for our reservation - however the tiny "check-in" area was crowded and awkward b/c of people hovering over nearby diners. I was glad that our party wasn't seated close to that area! Overall, it was a good experience."

  • "We were disappointed with the beef brisket which had no smoked flavor - it could have been a pot roast! The BBQ sauce helped somewhat. The chopped pork was clean (little fat, no bones) but only mildly flavored. The vinegar sauce gave it a some taste but without much red pepper flavor that I crave. These meals were over-priced for the quality, in our opinion. Our server, John, was a bright spot in the experience, however. He's "living the dream"."

  • "Brisket was boring, they were out of pulled pork and ribs were overlooked. We ordered the Sunday Supper complete meals. We were told it was family style, all you can eat. Since we ignored the brisket we accepted an offer of more ribs. When we got the bill, they had added $8 for the ribs. A beer was $8. Dinner fir 2, $62 before tip. Very disappointed and feel ripped off. Will not return"

  • "It's been a while since I have been here for dinner. The service was very good and we felt taken care of. The disappointment was with the food, once again. The last time here, the brisket was very, very dry and even the sauce could not save it. While not as dry this time, it still was not very good. I did try the BBQ Turkey, which was in fact very good, tender and moist. The sides I had (Baked Beans, Potato Salad) were just ok. The other appetizer / free items were really good though (hush puppies and biscuits). Overall, a good experience with the reservation piece of things and a so-so experience at the restaurant itself."

We got to sample different several options without a hefty price tag nor an over abundance of food. The service was engaging which added to a perfect Birthday celebration."

  • "Food was great, service was just ok - nothing special, server very slow. There was a wedding party in one section that was very noisy. We were seated in the back room which we didn't really care for. I'd come back for the food but the atmosphere is not really great. Also, Davie street was blocked off for a street party. Would have been nice if The Pit would have mentioned that when they called me earlier in the day to confirm the reservation. It made finding parking a bit of a challenge."

  • "My husband and I try our best not to have high expectations of new restaurants to us because of previous let downs . "The Pit" however exceeded any we could have imagined . Started off great we had a reservation at 4:30 got there early and was sat at 4:09 . Awesome start ! The food was amazing , never had BBQ taste so good . I can't believe my husband and I didn't discover this gem early . Service was great never had to ask for a refill the waiters were always checking (from afar at that not over bearing ). Just such a great restaurant and pretty affordable"

  • "Free valet parking but I don't trust car jockeys to drive my car. It's difficult to find street parking in that downtown area. I asked for seating in the quietest part of the room but there is no such place. The dining room is noisy, making normal conversation difficult. The service was indifferent with only one checkback. More butter? Sure! but the requested butter came as we were about to leave. Portions were adequate. Flavors mediocre. Presentation lacked inspiration. A poor dining value -- prices were high relative to food quality. As a total dining experience -- two stars out of a possible five."

  • "This was my fourth time eating at "The Pit" and it was good, but not great. We were seated very quickly, but took a minute for the waitress to stop by. When I ordered my specialty beer she informed me that it was a seasonal beer and they probably don't have it......I had to ask, "Then why is it on the standard menu?" Not a good start, but I will give credit to the waitress for not taking my frustration personally and finding my second choice. I can honestly say the food was better than any other previous visit. Throughout the meal we had 3 different wait staff stop by to check on us, fill water glasses, or clear the table. I think this is key to a great staff, sharing the work load and it doesn't go unnoticed."

  • "The biscuits were burned. Normally their biscuits are nice and fluffy and wonderful, but the chef actually let burned biscuits leave the kitchen! I was so disappointed, especially since we had friends visiting from out of town who have heard how great the Pit is for years!"

We also have excellent cooks on both sides of our family and we grew up enjoying (the long closed and VERY missed) Simp's BBQ after a day boating on the Albemarle Sound. The Pit was an upscale version of an excellent ENC BBQ joint.   • "We love The Pit! We bring everyone from out of town for dinner, but this last time we didn't go until around 9:45-10:00 and it was terrible! The service was horrible (we had 4 servers - 3 of which couldn't smile at all), we got our food literally 2 minutes after getting our appetizer, and the food was cold. Most of us brought most of our dinners home. I was so disappointed and embarrassed to have been bragging about the food to our out of town guests. I said I would recommend The Pit but not after 8:30/9:00!! It's so sad... I hate when you have to have these restrictions on places."

  • "I had another delicious meal. I ordered the chicken wings again for an appetizer. They smoke & then fry them. Best wings we've ever had - a little crispy on the outside & tender on the inside & the rub on them is delicious. I raved about the brisket to my husband , so he had that. He said it was delicious & wouldn't share, I barely got a taste of his mac & cheese side ( thick, cheddar cheese) . I had the pulled pork which was tender & full of hickory smoke flavor. My husband enjoyed a beer from one of the NC breweries, & we had the key lime pie the waitress recommended. It was made with a saltine crust instead of a graham cracker crust - outrageous! Great hushpuppies & biscuits too."

This place is a must if you truly love smoked meat! The service is superior too! Everyone helps, not just one person! It's refreshing to receive so much attention instead of servers walking past you just because it's not their table. Awesome job!"

  • "I saw the pit on one of those TV food shows and it looked really good. My son recently moved to Garner and it gave me a real good excuse to try The Pit out. I made reservations on line. We arrived 5 minutes early and was taken straightway to our table. The waiter was really nice and did a great job for the entire meal. I of course had to try the BBQ and Chicken Combo. It was out of this world. The mac n cheese was the best I have ever had in my life. The entire meal was fantastic and I am looking forward to eating there again soon. It's a two hour drive for me but perfectly justifible. Thanks, Walt"
