  • "This was our first visit to Sotto Sopra and we'll definitely be returning. We live in DC which has its share of upscale Italian spots. Sotto Sopra had a lovely upscale ambience but was not precocious. We were exceptionally well treated by our waiter, Alex, who took care of us at the bar when we first arrived and at dinner as well. We both had homemade fettuccine; one was an evening special with corn, bacon and tomato. The other was served with an osso bucco sauce. Both were excellent. For wine, we had a super Tuscan that was both well priced and delicious."

The atmosphere is incredible, the service is over the top and the food is increasingly mind-blowing from the moment you glance at the menu until it arrives at your seat when you realize it was even more incredible than you anticipated. The pairings are dynamic and bold, and nothing in the entire place is done without extensive intent. I can't stop smiling while I am there, because it is impossible to."

Not cheap - with one appetizer, two glasses of wine, main courses, coffees and desserts, came to $68/person. But a great place for the big night out."

  • "The food, atmosphere, and service here were outstanding. A group of my friends and I stopped in for the first time after a visit to the aquarium and got great recommendations from our waiter and we couldn't decide on a wine, so he let us do a many wine tasting to find out what would pair perfectly with our main course. All the food is actually prepared there with handmade pasta also on the menu. I've been to Italy and have been spoiled with great Italian food, but I will say this place is genuine and authentic to serve really great cuisine and have great professional service. Will definitely go back."

  • "More expensive than most Italian places, but food preparation/presentation great. Summer sangria was so citrus-dominated that I got no sense of wine at all. Took one sip and exchanged for a good glass of red wine the waiter recommended. One of our party didn't get dinner until 10 minutes after the rest of us. The cheese in the goat cheese salad is excellent, but it was just 3 marble-size balls. Next time, I'll order caesar salad or the superb sauteed squid my wife had. If you want appetizer, main, dessert, 1 glass of wine you'll spend about $75 each with tax/tip. For the money, I would have hoped not to have the problems I described. An overall good dining experience, and we will try again--but no summer sangria or goat cheese salad."

We had the Fried Polenta and Fried Calamari appetizers, Grilled Beef Tenderloin w/ asparagus and mashed potatoes, and the Pumpkin Saccheti with crumbled sausage, fine amaretti cookie crumbs, and cream sauce, and we ended with the mint and chocolate Creme Brulee and Mascarpone Cheesecake for dessert. Everything was just perfect, my pumpkin pasta was a juxtaposition of sweet and salty, just heavenly. The grilled tenderloin was cooked to a perfect medium rare, with a glaze that was tangy but light and refreshing, not overbearing like many glazes are. But be prepared to relax and enjoy your wine, as the service is slower-paced, just like dining in Italy! We adored this place."

Waitress knowledgeable about different wine characteristics and helped make final selection - excellent choice; wine cost was as to be expected for a good Italian restaurant. The opera presentations were well done, with humor. This was our second trip and we are planning more. As an aside, one of the group recommended also trying Sotto Sopra during restaurant week to experience more of the menu. Though a backed up at the valet, since all were leaving, the chef came out with staff to expedite retrieval of our cars - image that! She is certainly attuned to assure nothing messes up your dining experience."

I've hosted client events, a wedding reception, attended opera nights, stopped by on a weeknight and planned special occasions. They really know how to treat their customers. This time it was a weeknight birthday celebration. The waiter steered us to the most delicious specials, exchanged a glass of wine when I realized it was sweeter than I like and clued us in to the most scrumptious crime brûlée ever. If you haven't tried SS, do so! You'll never go back to Little Italy."

  • "This was not our first time dining at Sotto Sopra, so we know it is very good but this evening the tastes were exceptionally good. We tried the prosciutto special - it lived up to its claim of being the 'Ferrari' of prosciuttos. It was accompanied with bread, dressed greens in a cheese basket and the tastes blended so wonderfully. My Pork Osso Bucco was just the right amount of rich mushroom sauce without being too heavy and fall-off-the-bone tender meat. It all worked so well with the wine that our server recommended. Desserts were delicious as well, with the Tiramisu being another exquisite blend of flavors. Service was exceptional, as well. We left feeling why did we wait so long to come back."

  • "This used to be our favorite restaurant. They're so popular now that it's affecting their service. We waited 10 minutes for our table to be ready (two parties were seated before us, as soon as they arrived), and then waited 10 minutes for the server (the hostess finally came and took our drink order). The food is very good though (although skip the espresso) and was served at a good pace, and everyone was friendly. "

There is a beautiful picture window allowing you to see the neighborhood that bustles at just the right pace. Beautiful colorful flowers bloom just outside. Overall this is a warm experience that shouldn't be missed. If you like Caesar salad, you will love the fun presentation (and it is yummy). "
