A word from Social - Ottawa
Opened in the summer of 1999, SOCIAL was conceived as the perfect blend of restaurant and bar. It was envisioned as a place where guests could enjoy an evening drink without feeling obligated to order dinner too, but where a sizzling menu meant that food was always an excellent option. When its doors first opened, SOCIAL was the first restaurant in the capital to regularly feature a live DJ, which instantly gave it a reputation for innovation. Ten years later, SOCIAL continues to deliver, known in the capital city for its imagination and its chic, modern vibe. With fifteen-foot ceilings, ultramodern decor and gorgeous exposed stone walls, the space offers an unparalleled atmosphere for a sit-down dinner or some after-work cocktails. Guests can expect high-quality professional service and a menu to match, proving that SOCIAL is truly a downtown destination that has it all.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was out-of-this world. Fabulous flavour , texture and presentation Service was impeccable"

  • "My recent visit to Social was great. The chef must be new because the food was really good. I had the calamari app. followed by the short ribs. The only thing I would suggest is they expand their wine list other than that Social was a great place. If you go on Thursday - Sat the bar is hopping."

  • "Conveniently located to the National Arts Centre we often go to Social for a pre-concert supper. Must mention the wine, Raging Meg Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand's Marlborough region was excellent - very flavourful, crisp, tasty and refreshing. My wife had steak frites and, typically, she ate all the frites and only half the steak. Eating the left-overs I thought it was excellent, perfectly cooked (medium rare) and very tasty. My fish and clams were good took, the clams tasting fresh and the cod perfectly cooked, moist, tender and delicious. For dessert we split a passion fruit concoction that was the perfect compliment to the rest of the meal. Enjoy!"

  • "Every dish appears to be vying for a culinary award but over the top for me-very rich. This may explain why the service is soo slow-probably takes a long time to prepare the dishes. The food was good though if you like this kind of thing but a big cha ge from the previous chef and menu which I loved."

  • "Twice in the last month I took my friends/students out to lunch at Social. The ambience, service and food were as pleasing the second time as the first. We could sit and talk as long as we wanted without interruption. I would like to go to Social for dinner and will try it in the near future."

  • "My frustration with the quality of the service has now reached the point that I will no longer be bringing guests to Social. I was with a group on Thursday evening. Food-wise it was EXCELLENT. But the service hit a new low: we were ignored for long periods of time (which was a particular issue as the guest of honour had flown in from Europe, and was very jet-lagged), and the waiter assigned to our table simply disappeared for significant stretches. Whereas I usually find the noise level acceptable (we want to be able to hear ourselves talk), on Thursday evening the music was playing so loudly that conversation became difficult.. We asked to have the music turned down, but shortly afterwards the volume was cranked up again."

  • "My appetizer included the best lentils I had ever eaten and beets that were tasty. I was very impressed and pleased that the chef told our server how they were done. My main course was a little on the rich side - gnocchi with cheese, but that is my responsibility for ordering. My partner had the halibut special and enjoyed it. We were seated by the window, but the cost of watching the world go by is that cold feeling that Ottawa picture windows offer in this chilly month. The music was too obvious.. An early reservation in an almost empty place should be a signal to pump up the heat and moderate the tunes."

  • "One of my favorite salads is Salade Nicoise. The Salade Nicoise at Social was the best I have had! Other choices looked great as well. My friend had the lunchbox option. I will return!"

  • "I eat (somewhat) regularly at Social, because the food is really very good. I had a really wonderful meal on Friday night - lots of imagination in the kitchen, and the food looks as good as it tastes. I've eaten in very fine restaurants in many cities in the world, and the kitchen is doing very solid work. But the service is only fair, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated by the fact that there is NOTHING put on the table to keep you from starving to death if a member of your party is a little late, and that it can take f-or-e-v-e-r for them to take your order. The front of house needs to meet the same standards as the kitchen."

  • "I've eaten at Social a couple of times and had a wonderful experience each time. Only disappointment was, the website stated that you had white port on the menu but there was none:("

  • "Social is one of Ottawa's better restaurants but it is often hit or miss. If you are in Ottawa for 1 night don't go but if you are local give it a try. Its always better on Friday and Saturday nights, the bar fills up nicely. Also go after a hockey game you might be lucky and see a few of the Ottawa Senators."

  • "...worse dessert. Really liked the tartare, but the waiters did not seem interested in serving our table, in spite of us being the only ones in the place (early dinner). The dessert was really poorly explained on the menu."

  • "Whether it's for a special occasion or just a night out, you can count on your evening at The Social being a memorable one. The menu is large enough to satisfy most palates while at the same time small enough not to overwhelm. The atmosphere is warm and inviting but the buzz in the restaurant is electric. Service was exceptional, as was the food. All of our dishes were creatively prepared and presented by The Social's pride of the kitchen, Chef Kirin Stein. The Sommelier's suggested wine to go with our meal turned out to be an absolute gem at an affordable price. Everyone in our party of 4 loved their dining experience at the restaurant and all agreed that it will be a preferred destination for future occasions."

  • "Overall there was nothing extraordinary about the food for the price we paid."

  • "Had not been here for a couple years. Food is still as good but prices have crept up. Least expensive appetizer is $15 - we found that a bit hefty. However chef does produce very imaginative and delicious food, so would go back for special occasion."

  • "We sat by the window able to enjoy lots of natural light. Food was well priced, nicely presented, at the right temperature with a good taste. The quality and value of the food has certainly improved since I last ate at Social about two years ago."

  • "I went for dinner and came back the next evening for wine and cheese. Awesome staff, funny and knowledgeable. The menu was creative and the food looked and tasted great."

  • "Had the nicoise. Very good but not enough Tuna for the price. Same with dessert, very good but portion is too small... or the prices are too high. Suggestion: Or increase the portion or decrease the price."

  • "Only caution is that there's a steady beat of fairly loud dance music, which gets louder as the atmosphere starts to get clubby around 8:30 or 9 on a Saturday."
    Dined on 11/30/2013
  • "The menu was far too small, and it was a struggle to make a dinner choice...Not many options to choose from if you're tired of beef and aren't into duck and lamb...there were two fishes on the menu, and chicken but....most of the descriptions did NOT appeal! Overly fancy presentation didn't make the make the scallop appetizer taste any better..the squash purée was more like a blob of runny, Gerber baby food. Appetizers were extremely small and cheap for the price. Short rib hamburger was not as "well received" as our waitress promised. Wine by the glass was fairly reasonable, but they totally rip you off on bottles, charging more than four times what you'd pay in at the LCBO. Three disappointments of four visits..there will not be a fifth."

  • "We live a block from this restaurant and after our visit, are still looking for that "neighbourhood gem". The food was ok, the service was efficient but certainly not "warm and friendly" and our table, unfortunately was next to a very noisy foursome. Perhaps we are just too hard to please (i.e. an above average meal at a reasonable price with attentive and friendly service). One particular irritant during our visit was to be presented with the wine list, allowed time to choose a wine, made a choice and immediately told by the server that the choice I just made was not in stock. Not a good start to our evening."

  • "A group of girls and I went out for Friday night drinks. We made a reservation and good thing becuase it was pretty full. The hostess barley greeted me and someone else called over her icy shoulder to follow her to a table in the back. The sever was fine when I was waiting for my friends. But when we started to order drinks, he was insistent on us ordering food. When we declined and told him it was a drinks night, he service declined terrible. He was unattentive and cold. He hovered when we were going to pay the bill. Instead of taking care of all of us at the table, he took one bill from us, one bill from another random table, another bill from us, another from the other table- that's not multi-tasking, that's rude!"

  • "Beet salad appetizer was good, but small. Scallops appetizer was excellent and decent portion. Had the Lamb Saddle for main course. The lamb is served medium-rare. Again a fairly small portion. Very few vegetables and starch in the dish. I guess the good news is that even with 2 courses, you will have plenty of room left for dessert. This is a very trendy restaurant, with very trendy clientele. Noise level pretty high, but manageable. There is lounge music playing and bar gets fairly busy. Service is excellent."

  • "The food was very good, however, the same cannot be said for the service. The waitress barely acknowledged us, we finally got served by the hostesses."

  • "It must have been an off night at Social last Monday. The service was as friendly as usual but excruciatingly slow. A very long time after taking the order, and long after serving the first course, our server informed us that one on the main ingredients for my friend's second course (a salad!) was not available and asked her permission to substitute a different cheese. The two guys in our party of four had ordered just one large plate rather than two small plates and sat waiting, by then VERY hungry, all that time. I will think twice before taking out-of-town friends there again."

  • "My girlfriends and I love Social and we go for lunch often. The menu has changed recently and our most favourite items were removed, beet salad with goat cheese and the tuna wasabi dish. We struggled to choose from the new menu. We ended up with the Burger and it was just ok. Please bring those items back."

  • "We truly enjoy going to Social, but this latest experience was not comfortable at all for our group of seven people. We made our reservations one month prior to that evening, and we were put into a very tight corner where half of us were squished next to each other and could not easily move our arms to eat. We left as soon as our dinner was over, just so we could get away from the discomfort. We still like Social, but are hoping they will put smaller groups (maximum 4 people) in that corner."

  • "I went there on the recommendation of a colleague and brought another colleague. We were in town for work and wanted more than an average experience. We used the online reservation service, which was "neat", although my bb wouldnt allow me to update the reservation when it looked like we would be 15 mins late. The place was full but we were seated right away, although in a location the wait staff used as a shortcut to a larger seating area beyond us. It was distracting to have them go by us like that. I wasnt annoyed, but I could see how others might be. The menu was completely new and, although I could see promise in the meal, it fell short of excellent. I will probably go back again, but will try other highly rated restaurants 1st"

  • "I order a seasonal greens salad When it came it was all spinach with long chewy stalks I am not fond of raw spinach so had I known I would not have ordered it The waitress told me seasonal greens meant what happened to be in season I didn't know it was spinach season I think they should tell the customer what the seasonal greens are I also had clams and the sauce was very salty"

  • "Ambience & service were great-food,not so much.Delete salmon source [overcooked ] & pasta [bland] & burger [dry] from menu. 20 minute wait for dessert warrants a treat from the kitchen -no attempt - we cancelled ."
