Diner Reviews
  • "Immediately after paying just over $200 for dinner with my girlfriend, we asked the hostess if we could schedule another dinner there for a larger party in a month's time. As she went to the back to write down our information, our server Carl came over to our table and asked us to get up and leave as there were other customers waiting. I asked if he was serious because I could not believe what I heard, and he said "yes" with a complete deadpan expression. In my SF dining experiance, or any place for that matter, I have never been asked to get up from our table to accomodate waiting customers. We left the restaurant completely insulted, angry, and confused. Needless to say, we cancelled our follow-up reservation."

  • "I waited 1 month to get a reservation at Rich Table and it was well worth the wait. All the dishes were fantastic, creatively put together and executed perfectly. Notable items were the Porcini donuts, sardine chip, and the pork/peach bucatini. Highly recommend."

  • "We had friends come from out of town and get engaged during the day so my husband & I brought them here for a nice dinner. It was amazing. The atmosphere is great with an open kitchen so you can see the chefs working in harmony and being so precise. We started with the gruyere roasted potatoes, sardine chips, and porcini donuts and loved them all. Much better than everyone getting individual appetizers because you get to try everything. We also split a pork and peach pasta between the 4 of us - wonderful. I had the trout with corn grits and loved it, my husband had the steak and said it was very good. Our two guests also loved their entrees. For dessert the four of us split the olive oil cake and the crushed chocolate bar. Amazing!"

  • "This was a spectacular meal only highlighted by exceptional service! I will recommend to all friends in SF and visit again when I am back in town from NY."

  • "No wow factor. Good but not great. Way over priced."

  • "From the heartfelt birthday wishes from no fewer than three staff to the porcini-dusted doughnuts to the papparadelle to the main courses and stellar dessert (and bonus birthday dessert!), our first trip to Rich Table was memorable throughout. Our waitress had perhaps the best knowledge of the menu I have ever seen in ANY restaurant and never steered us wrong. The "bites" were decadent and delicious (please keep the doughnuts on the menu forever!), the housemade pasta outstanding, the main courses (scallops and salmon) exceptional, and the white chocolate mousse with watermelon granita a perfect conclusion. The cocktails were excellently crafted too. I can see a Michelin star in your future; it would be well deserved."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Rich Table. The food was delicious and we loved the service. Our waiter had quite a sense of humor and did not take the food talk too seriously! We hope to do a repeat dinner there soon!"

  • "What a disappointment. I've been hearing about this place for ages, and after finally scoring a reservation I have no idea what all the fuss is about. The service was slow and overdramatic, and with each dish that came out the combination of flavors repeatedly fell flat. That said, the presentation was nice, but I'm here to eat not admire. Also, just to highlight the slow service, it took almost 10 minutes to get a cup of decaf coffee after ordering. There are plenty of better options in the city -- especially at this price point."

  • "Great food, Terribly slow. took an hour for a piece of bread to show up on the table, and 2 hours for the main courses to arrive from the time of our reservation. We were pretty hangry after the first hour and started asking questions. The server was very nice about it and was crying she seemed so upset with the situation herself. The hostess came over and apologized at the 90 minute mark, and ultimately when we complained again, she comped the dinner but still decided to give us some grief for complaining. Not their finest moment."

  • "Our waiter was unfriendly and pretentious and it ruined what would have been a nice meal. Very disappointing."

  • "We've dined here twice, and, yes, they remembered us. Katrina is wonderful, and our water, Connor, treated us as special guests. The food is exceptional. Interesting ingredients and amazing preparation. (The salmon was just BUTTER - yum.) I need to remember to keep the menu while we eat so I can identify the unique ingredients in every dish. Try the doughnuts (filling) and the sardine chips. The pasta? OMG. Just wish they'd open a second Rich Table, in Danville. Or at my house."

  • "The food was great, our waitress was great, the space was nice. The food is fairly priced and I will definitely be going back to try more of the menu. Missing one star because the food took a bit longer than expected, but otherwise it was a great experience!"

  • "We waited a bit for the buzz to die down before dining at Rich Table, which is the latest foodie entry into the Civic Center dining scene. Replacing the late lamented Paul K, the room is light and airy and buzzing with lots of noise. We took in a pre-performance meal and the server paced us well. The dried porcini doughnuts with raclette as a starter were absolutely fantastic. The rest of the dishes were quite good but didn't have the star quality of the doughnuts. The halibut with beets just didn't seem quite right. Interesting wine list. Not sure it merits all the buzz, but a nice addition to the Civic Center scene."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and the food was great and service was excellent. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. I had put a note on my reservation that it was my boyfriend's birthday and they brought out our desert with a candle on it and everyone on the staff wished him happy birthday as we were leaving the restaurant. Overall, great dining experience and would definitely go back again."

  • "Very convenient to the War Memorial opera house, and the menu is quite good. Food is excellent and the service was superb. Small but very good by-the-glass wine selection. Nice find. Will definitely return on either symphony or opera nights, maybe even on jazz nights."

  • "The food is outstanding and the service is friendly, causal but not snobby. Prepare to share your tasting notes with the customers at the table next to you. The only complain is that the restaurant is extremely warm, needs a better ventilation system."

  • "Very accommodating for legitimate-I-carry-an-epi pen---food allergies which was super appreciated! Put the wine in a bucket when we thought it wasn't cold enough. Seemed a bit of lag time between plates though. But overall the food was fantastic!"

  • "All of the food at Rich Table was excellent. This tasting menu is a value for SF in terms of quality and cost. That said there are several things that need some adjustment. The pacing of the meal was odd, with too much food arriving at once, that could have been spread out a little. It would be nice if the tasting menu was printed or on a chalk board. There were several points in the meal where we could have gotten one of several dishes, but were never asked about preferences. All and all we had a wonderful meal, but the details need a little more attention."

  • "The stools/chairs at our table were not very comfortable. I felt like i was being forced forward, out of the chair. That, paired with my feet not touching the ground, made it difficult to sit in. Everything else was great."

  • "We had an early dinner here before the symphony. The food was interesting and delicious. Sardine chips as an appetizer were a novelty and the portabello donuts dusted with mushroom essence and served with raclette sauce were special. I had halibut that floated off the plate and my friend had the salmon, both with innovative preparations and surprises. My fish was over a corn souffle and was garnished with pistachios, and the salmon had baby peas and bok choy. For dessert we shared the carmelized olive oil cake with peaches and a bit of ice cream. Stellar!"

  • "We waited quite a bit for a reservation and we were very excited to try this restaurant less than 2 blocks from our apt. We were not met with the same level of enthusiasm, however. Service: 2 stars - waiter was standoffish amd terse. Met my gluten sensitivity question re: pasta with a terse response and no offer to point out dishes I could eat until I explicitly asked. We eventually were able to draw him out but why should we have to prove ourselves to our waiter?? Food: I can excuse bad service if the food is to die for. Simply put, it is not. It was just okay. The chilled bay shrimp was very good, my bf's halibut was cooked very well, but my steak was very salty. The food is layered with too many flavors that compete. Save $!"

  • "I had sand dab for an appetizer and steak for the main dish. Both dishes were very interesting, but I thought unfortunately interesting to the point of being gimmicky. For that reason I will not return to Rich Table nor recommend it to any of my friends."

  • "It's a nice little oasis on a busy street. We had a lovely meal with great salads and delectable pasta. All very fresh and lovely. Solid wine list, whether by the glass or by the bottle. We skipped dessert because it was late but those looked good. Will be back. Soon."

  • "We had been looking forward to our dinner at Rich Table, after reading all the positive reviews. The four of us had a very disappointing experience. Entrees were good (not great), we ordered the "doughnut" bites, which were tasteless dough balls with a bland dipping sauce that looked like yogurt, the soup was a weird combination of ingredients and fell way short on flavor, the bread also lacked flavor. The service was poor, our waiter was somewhat attentive in the beginning but once the restaurant got busy he was nowhere to be found. The staff is not attentive, they removed our plates with most of our appetizers not eaten and didn't inquire if there was a problem."

  • "Our waiter was outstanding. So attentive. But the food was just okay. We couldn't taste any porcini mushroom in the Porcini Doughnuts. While good, it taste like warm, fried bread. One of us got the Duck Breast Tagliatelle and I got the Halibut. Both were just mediocre."

  • "Food was good. Sardine chips were beautiful; liver mouse and mushroom puffs were fun. Small and large plates were good, I had the Bucatini with sausage and beef tartare. Service was slow and fairly robotic. Had to gesture 4 times to get an answer to a simple question. Did not feel like a welcome customer but rather a necessary evil."

  • "Dine for 2 hours as plate after delicious plate of creative bite come rolling our of the kitchen. Lots of food for only $80. It was a shame to be too full to eat the last bite of perfectly cooked steak with two more courses to go. Ambiance is comfortable and casual. Service was great. But make no mistake, go for the fabulous food."

  • "Rich Table was on my 'must try' list. Loved NYer print in the bathroom & overall decor. Was surprised by strong fish/oil smell walking in, off-putting as knew my hair/clothes would stink. Fried sardine chips & truffle donuts were likely culprits as smell got stronger with fired orders. Tried oysters (loved), chips, shrimp, peach soup, burrata, crudo, summer squash gratin, coconut panne cotta (amazing). Best was shrimp. Soup was too rich with no distinctive flavor. Crudo was just ok. Burrata delicious, strawberry gazpacho lacking. Gouda in squash tasted like mustard sauce, again muted & missing richness/texture of typical gratin. Service and wine were great. May go again, try a meat dish & see if it's redeeming. Nice tho pricey."

  • "Good: -outstanding service -Steak, Arugula, Peach entree -white chocolate mousse and strawberry granita -2011 Baker Pinot Noir Could've been better: -Hamachi appetizer -Salmon with crushed pea vinaigrette - WAY over salted I would definitely go back. The missteps in the kitchen could be for a number of reasons and the high points make me confident that someone definitely knows what they're doing back there. "

  • "2nd dinner in two weeks here. The first was brilliant, creative. The second was banal. Was told that Rich was in the kitchen on first visit, told he was not there on second. Seems to be a conclusion one can draw from that."

  • "Fantastic, quaint restaurant in Hayes Village area of San Fran. Each item was terrific and the service was perfect - always there, but never hovering and very familiar with the details of each dish. I can't wait to go back. A must go"

  • "1st, the service was excellent. We weren't rushed & they honored our request for a quiet table. We applaud the chefs' inventiveness but some combos were just weird. Most dishes were missing real depth in the flavors. The sardine chips were fine. A lighter dough & more mushroom flavor would help the porcini donuts. Our favorite dish was the hamachi with puffed rice furikake - a wonderful combination of textures and flavors. The chitarra had delightfully fresh fava beans, but was salty. The salmon with pea puree was ok (we had a great version of this at Boulud so there was something missing; I just don't know what). The panna cotta with candied hazelnuts, cherries, & coffee ice cream was a strange mix of flavors that did not mesh. "

  • ". . . and sometimes not. My wife had the fish and loved it. I had a generous pork chop and loved it."

  • "The porcini doughnuts were outstanding! and moved to out of this world with the melted cow's milk cheese. The scallops were OK, but the sauce was outstanding. (Great levain bread to sop it all up.) The halibut was judged as very good - wasn't over done; the Chicken liver mousee and cauliflower were OK, but the asparagus was outstanding (both orders). I had the pork loin. It was a little less than OK - I thought it was dry and there was nothing remarkable about the taste. The walnut ice was very good. My companions had a chocolate dessert they said was very good. Service by the new-wait-person-in training was fine. Loved the large windows. The place does get loud, though."
