Diner Reviews
  • "…a fine dining experience these days, but here it is. I made a reservation through Open Table and had no problem being seated despite others saying that people get turned away. I guess dropping in without one can be chancy, because it's so good. The food and presentation was excellent. The staff were warm and attentive. Great bar, too. Very creative plates. Menu is varied and exciting. If you're going to LACMA or the Page/Tar Pits, it's a must-do. The surrounding grounds are lovely for strolling. It ain't cheap: quality like this never is. But entirely reasonable, considering the experience. You'll want to be generous with the tip because the staff is so cordial. I'll be back — often."

  • "I am a galloping gourmet and eat out a lot. Ray's is a real culinary star for LA. The beet/orange blood salad with carmelized pistachios and yogurt sauce was an incredible treat! A real shame that beets are only here in the spring time. The hamachi was superb and the scallops were good, not great - needed one more ingredient to make it sing. Overall, this is one of the top restaurants in LA!"

  • "Our Lunch experience was mediocre at best. The service was poor. My guest and I both had the "burger". Mine was not cooked as I had ordered it. It took me 10 minutes to get someone's attention to re-cook it and then 15 minutes to bring me a re-cooked burger. In the meantime, my guest and I ate half of hers and then we shared mine. Very unsatisfactory experience! We didn't bother with dessert as we were sitting at the table for at least 20 minutes with empty plates before the waiter asked about dessert. The only positive comment is the Hostess noticed we were both carrying Happy Birthday gift bags. She asked if one of us was having a Birthday and we told her we both were. When the check came, there was a 20% Birthday discount on the bill."

  • "They have a nice variety of things on the small plates. We had a salad to start , goat and pork belly to follow. Dessert was a nice rum meringue. The food was a bit salty. Our order somehow got lost, but they comped almost everything to apologize. I'll be back to give some other plates a try."

  • "T he bar is eclectic, superb cocktail menu, that by the way is changing next week, as Ray's and Stark always looks for new culinary innovations, and they are able to excel each and every time. Terrific ambiance, feels "European lifestyle", one that's attractive to everyone that appreciates comfort and luxury. The inside dining room area is designed basic, but very effective; as if no distraction will be allowed to overcome the food's quality. The "fried oysters" could not have been better, delight in every bite and scooped up every bit of sauce in dish. The Halibut superbly cooked; as was the goat; as an appetizer. Try the water menu, a must to complement your dining. I salute Chef Chris for a showcase of dining in the L A scene."

  • "It was a confusing members night-and their 3rd anniversary---so very disorganized... They were sweet though and apologetic---enough so-that we will give it another try when we are at the museum-but only then"

  • "If this restaurant was not located at LACMA it would have been out of business in a week. The food was tasteless and a lot of ingredient was right out of the can! Even the salad was poorly prepared! Such a waste of money and time!"

  • "Ate with a group of 8 after seeing the Turrell exhibit. Made for a wonderful, relaxing and delicious night. Variety of menu was a plus with various appetites catered to. Recommend the salad sides and the beet green ravioli. Outstanding."

  • "While the food is consistently good, the busy lunch crowd suffered from understaffing. Long waits for the waiter to appear. Long wait for bread refill and long wait for the bill."

  • "They ran out of food. Or rather certain dishes. Totally unacceptable, I don't care if that creates a demand and makes the restaurant seemingly more hot. It's bad form. Service was chaotic and a mess with waiters literally dripping sweat. We waited a long time for the basics-.water and menus. To be clear, this was for lunch. I've been there for dinner and had one of the best meals ever. But both times going to lunch at Rays has proven to be less than stellar. For the price and location, I expect more. As a side note, the chairs on the bar side are stained and ratty looking...there should be an easy fix here. It looked like a dilapidated airport bar that had seen better days. A shame since the setting is so awesome. #ucandobetterrays"

  • "This could be a great place to spend an evening--wonderful museum, lovely California weather, good food, hip bar. But it is so understaffed that the whole evening was undermined."

  • "Had the hamburger benedict, the simplest item on menu, except for salads. My guest had open face lamb sandwich. We both enjoyed our choices, except the lamb had an unexpected spicy sauce which my elderly guest found a bit too hot."

  • "I've reviewed this place many times, but again, lunch on Sunday was fantastic. Butternut squash soup with firm crisp squares of pear and walnuts; crispy farro with pork belly, fried brocollini and a poached egg; and brussels sprouts with thinly shaved some-kind-of-tuna, but it looked like prosciutto. The service is so friendly and helpful. Martin is especially charming and always stops by to chat. We love this place! One glass of wine was complimentary because it was the end of the bottle and not quite a full glass. So nice."

  • "I enjoyed meeting my daughter of lunch before seeing the Calder Exhibit at LACMA this past weekend. The food was nicely presented and tasty and the service attentive. Didn't try any of their special dishes but found their chopped salad nice, bread delish and crunchy and prices okay for lunch. I would dine there again when going to the Museum."

  • "I took my dear friend to see the DVF exhibit because she first came to L.A. during the 1970's and since it was her last Saturday in L.A. before moving to Idaho, it would be a full-circle experience for her. My friend is also fighting cancer so the convenience of Ray and Stark Bar for lunch was priceless -- especially since my friend had to see the exhibit in a wheelchair given her low energy. Our server -- an exuberant young Black man -- was exceptional and so was the food. My friend absolutely loved.the Little Gem Salad which was the perfect sized meal for her. I would come back in a heartbeat -- and I truly hope I can do so when my dear friend returns to L.A. for a visit and is in remission."

  • "The seafood dishes were less than enjoyable. The curried clams were not fresh and were pretty fishy smelling. The calamari in the squid ink pasta was also not enjoyable. Drinks and salad were great."

  • "When we sat down at Rays, we were excited to try the menu along with some beer and wine. The first let down was how long everything we asked for took. I would say it took 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive after ordering them. I ordered the Garganelli and it arrived at room temperature. I would highly recommend coming here for drinks and small plate appetizers, but not a main course. It is too expensive for what you get. Next time, we decided on going back to the food trucks across the street and stopping at Rays for a drink afterwards. The main dishes are not worth it."

  • "Ive been here many times, and this time was off. We were kept waiting with the excuse that others were "camping there since 10:30am" and our reservation was at 1!! Also the service was not great. She sort of forgot about us, and never had water refilled till it was time to put down the check, etc.... Not a good one. They weren't terribly busy, and all that was causing issue was the rain outside. Usually I have a good experience, but this time it wasn't."

  • "Restaurants at museums usually are not so hot, but Ray's is a notable exception. I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy; my wife and youngest daughter are on the other end of the spectrum, and Ray's managed to please both sets of palates. I started with the clams in coconut broth and the broth had just enough zing to be tasty but not overpower the clams. I followed with the beef cheeks with English peas; the beef was very tender and quite delicious. My wife and daughter shared the brussel sprouts, baby carrots and beet salad plates, and then shared the Agnolotti del Pin pasta. I tried their vegetables and especially liked the carrots which were very sweet. My wife and daughter also really enjoyed their pasta. The service was excellent."

  • "I'd read a review in our local paper(Toronto Star) that highly recommended this restaurant. It was nice to have read a review that did not disappoint. The food was great and the service fabulous. My family really enjoyed the experience. I would certainly recommend this place as a must do when visiting LA."

  • "What a major let down. I was entertaining a guest that was in town & expected a wonderful experience given that Ray's is part of the patina group . We had 4 dishes and all were disappointing. Our pizza was soggy, the cheese on it wasn't melted and the tomato sauce was dull like chef boy-r-dee...Our cheese plate portions were small and on a huge plate with barely any accoutraments. We had been to Gjelina the day before where for the SAME price our lunch in every respect was sensational !! When I told the waiter his reply was he would tell the kitchen. SO UNACCEPTABLE.... No offer to replace a dish or not charge us or even ask how to remedy the situation.I will not return & I will tell everyone I know NOT to bother going here."

  • "The restaurant exceeded my expectations. The pilota - crispy farro, pork belly, soft poached egg, broccoli, scallion - was amazing. Loved the people watching (we sat outside). Great place to have dinner before our event at LACMA!"

  • "What we liked: 1. It's located in LACMA and we got to experience the urban lights. Next time we return, we will experience the museum too. 2. Free corkage for the first wine bottle. 3. Brussel sprouts with anchovy vinaigrette and the beef cheeks. 4. Free parking because we arrived after 5 pm and we spent more than $25. 5. The overall value of the dining experience. 6. Decor was simple and modern. The only thing we didn't like is my wife's new york steak. We requested medium but we got medium well and so the steak was hard and dry."

  • "Ray's is the restaurant associated with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. You do not have to enter the museum or buy a ticket to go to the restaurant. The menu is inventive and changes regularly. There are no bad dishes. Loved the beet salad. Fish dish was too salty, otherwise, four diners, three different appetizers/salads, three different entrees and they were all very good to excellent -- except for the too salty fish. I've been to Ray's for business lunches, but it turns out it was great for a birthday celebration and for a date too."

  • "We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and were seated quickly. We had the prix fixe dinner and the octopus entree was delicious. All of the food was tasty and the perfect temperature when it arrived at the table. The food is pricy but I would return to try more dishes. The restaurant was busy because it was vday and a Friday night but the service was still great and our waiter was very attentive. I thought the noise level was moderate and I think that's because we were seated near the entrance by the hostess but it wasn't too distracting and I was able to have a nice dinner and conversation with my date."

  • "I lunch with ladies who like to eat lots of salads. No pork belly or strange ingredients. It would be nice to have an ordinary salad among the strange salads. And, more salads on the menu, we don't eat whole dinners for lunch. Thanks."

  • "I would give Ray's a "fair" rating. The staff was friendly and the hostess was very helpful, but the service was slow. Our table was not set properly (we were missing forks and knives at a couple of place settings) and we did not get water for a full 10 minutes. We had to flag down our waiter to order 10 minutes after that. I felt bad because he was clearly overwhelmed. We dined on a Saturday at noon-- one would assume that management would try to have the restaurant fully staffed, as that's "prime time" at LACMA! Anyway, when our food finally arrived it was delicious, so kudos to the chef. I will go back because I love going to LACMA and dining with friends there, but I will hope that service improves!"
