Diner Reviews
  • "Expensive, loud, well below average. We were excited for this ressie, but the table was crammed in & crowded by the bar. The menu was nothing great, very average food. Service was slow. Night was ruined by price gouging at bar. They added $2 per martini on a line item called "DC". When we inquired, we were told this was "dealers choice", and is a standard up charge on martinis (making it a very small cocktail glass pour for a whopping $18)! Rather than remove the charge management was condescending & dismissive. Dinner: $300 for 5ppl, lacked charm & all else special. Service was slow & mediocre, management was rude. We would have been better off @ the food trucks on Wilshire! Will not be returning. Shame! Ruined a lovely summer night."

  • "Had Ray's Dine LA dinner menu. I was impressed with the quantity and quality of the food. It was definitely a satisfying meal and a great value."

  • "After 4 hours of looking at some fabulous art it was an ideal spot for a delicious lunch. Glad I checked Open Table on my way to LACMA...when we got there for our 1:00 reservation they were turning people away, The hot day made the "Water Menu" a boon....though a bit pretentious! The food was great ...especially my Himachi.... and a lovely glass of pink wine made the final push through the galleries a breeze."

  • "This is one of the nicest places to have a summer dinner. I just wish the menu was it bit broader."

  • "My friend and I celebrated her milestone birthday by dining at Ray's and attending the museum on a member's night. It was a perfect evening. We participated in the Dine LA menu and would recommend it in the future. The price was reasonable, the portions were generous, and the food was unique and tasty,"

  • "Although there were not many people there, and the waiter knew we had a time constraint, he disappeared and was very slow in service. Thank goodness there was an attentive bus boy who gave us water and refills for tea. Our meal came out late and although it was good, we felt rushed."

  • "Ray's is a must for us whenever we visit LACMA. The chacuterie plate was excellent, as were the chopped salad and the stone fruit plate with burrata cheese. The fruits were perfectly ripe, as they must be. Charming manager Martin always comes over to chat. Sitting outside and people-watching is always a pleasure here. Highly recommended."

  • "The only downside of Ray & Stark's is that at times the service can be slow. But it's a beautiful place (you can pick from the quiet indoor room or the busy outdoors cafe) with an excellent selection of wines by the glass and beers (love the dark ones). The sage flatbread is to die for, and we often find ourselves having a second order of the great (and free) potato chips. The menu changes often and is always fresh and tasty. Go."

  • "And it's at Ray's. A diverse and interesting menu made it hard to choose. We made our selections and before our first course arrived, a bread board was placed on the table. Warmed with a crunchy crust and soft whole-grain center, it foretold how wonderful the meal was going to be. Our cheese plate arrived with 3 small portions and more bread (!) that were, in fact, the perfect sizes to sample, savor and enjoy. Next came a small bowl of roasted seasonal peppers that were salty perfection. We each chose the stone fruit salad as our entree. Wonderful, ripe and juicy summer fruit with burrata & pistachios. The service was excellent, as was our pleasant and personable server. Lunch definitely enhanced a memorable day at LACMA."

  • "We had a wonderful date night at Stark Bar, but the service was horrendous. It took 10 minutes (it was not that busy) for our waiter to even come over and ask us if we needed a drink or water. I had to ask for the wine list. After ordering it took 20 minutes for each course to appear after our plates had been cleared. Each time we had a new dish our waiter would walk by and not say anything. I never even had the opportunity to order a second drink. Finally at the end of the meal, we sat waiting for our entree plates to be cleared and ask for a box for 10 minutes while our waiter walked by twice avoiding eye contact. At one point I looked over to see him having a glass of wine with other servers. This happened again while waiting to pay"

  • "Went with my girlfriend and another couple for DineLA week. The staff at Ray's was clearly overwhelmed by the full house, and the service suffered noticeably. I was called multiple times to confirm our reservation; TWICE within two hours of our time! Even then the inside seating request recommended by the HOSTESS was incorrectly noted. Our server was very nice, but he was too infrequently available, and the attention to detail just wasn't there. My girlfriend wasn't informed her fish would be served medium rare. One of our desserts was never brought out. Judging solely on the DineLA pre-fixe menu, food quality and presentation were top-notch; taste unfortunately wasn't at the same level."

  • "We visited Ray's restaurant at LACMA for the first time, on a quiet Tuesday evening, in conjunction with Dine LA week, tried everything on the special menu: http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/what-to-do/restaurants/rays-and-stark-bar#poi-tabs , with the exception of the spaghetti/Uni, and were very pleasantly surprised with the freshness & quality of food, and juxtaposition of flavors. Unexpected flavor combinations were deliciously balanced, beautifully prepared & presented, and the service was top notch too…highly recommended!"

  • "The bar is a happenin' place!! It would be great to go here after a visit to the museum. Love the outdoor dining, and seeing the day turn into night while enjoying friends' company over cocktails. The steak at the restaurant is A MUST!!!!! It was perfection!"

  • "Generally, the food at Ray's is very very good, but for this lunch it was overly salty -- had a beef rib sandwich which was over-salted and dry. The potato chips that came with were also way too salty."

  • "it doesn't look like much when passing by but the food is good but the drink choices were nothing great. mostly gin and rum bared if that's what you're into. I believes it changes seasonally so i'll be back during the colder months for my whiskey fix."

  • "Special to have dinner right there after seeing the Kandinsky on Monday night. The food was so beautifully presented and yummy. We sat inside, and it was very comfortable. Server was welcoming and helpful. I have eaten in the bar area many times, but I will definitely return for dinner."

  • "The location is superb. The bar area beautiful and abuz. The restaurant - visually - sort of what you see at an Agip rest stop on any Italian autostrada. The service excellent - the menu very lackluster and disappointing. While the food tasted fine - I want much more from a LACMA eating venue. Frankly, the food more exciting and varied at their cafeteria style venue (cafe?) across from the Japanese Pavilion. Come on Patina Group, you can do better!"

  • "A wonderful dining experience. I'm looking forward to my next visit. The water menu is perfectly selected. The Campari aperitif was refreshing. Sea Bass? Perfectly cooked and superbly condiment. A must restaurant for foodies."

  • "Just a lovely atmosphere. On a Friday night, listen to jazz, it's busy with a cool vibe of people and it's just lovely to dine outside and imbibe. Great fun!"

  • "Great food and excellent service. I've gone on Friday night a few times while the live Jazz is going on at the museum. A few of us will share a different dishes. Everything is delicious"

  • "The food was above average. The decor is a bit cafeteria-like. Not offensive but not very warm or inviting. Service was attentive, if a bit chaotic (too many people running around and not seeming to have a clear plan as to who was doing what). Nice place to have lunch before a museum visit. Nice little outdoor seating area."

  • "the place was nice, great environment at museum, the staff was great and knowledgeable, but the food is really average. The charcuterie plate was really flat, uninspired and very thin on meats. Perhaps we ordered wrong with the bites plates, but nothing on the mains excited us."

  • "First time to Ray's, not the last. Hosted a pre-meeting business lunch here because of location. The place was still busy at 1:30 on a Friday, but we asked for and were given a relatively quiet table in the back. Noise was low enough to have a conversation. Service was excellent, and the food really impressed. My pulled pork sandwich was really interesting with an egg on top, great gooey smokey flavor. Colleagues were very pleased with their salad and house burger. I'll have to try dinner sometime soon."

  • "I booked this restaurant specifically to try their grilled octopus. I saw great reviews about it on the website and yelp. We were disappointed to find out it was not offered or it has not been offered for a while. They told you us the website menu has not been updated for a while."

  • "We ordered 4 dishes. The Blue Shrimp, Poleta (Pork Belly with crispy Faro and broccolli), Burger Benedict, and fries. The Fries and Burger came out great - those were delicious. The Blue Shrimp came out as a giant plate of green beans with a side of shrimp - 2 pieces of shrimp and the 2/3 of the plate was beans. While the Poleta was deep fried Faro that was so difficult to eat it felt like eating bird seed. The Porky Belly was chopped up and deep fried so small that you could barely tell they were there. It should be called Deep Fried Faro with a hint of Pork Belly ... Misleading Menus. Quite disappointing to be honest."

  • "Understaffed. Restaurant inside was like an oven. Outside was crowded and slow service. Pizza tasted like it was microwaved. Pasta was bathed in salt."

  • "I took my lady there last night to celebrate her birthday. The only thing better than the amazing food, was the service. I used open table for the first time when booking the reservation. I added the info about her birthday & they took care of the rest. We will be back for sure! The staff, everyone from the hostess at the door to our waitress (Christine) to the other servers that helped out,... We were very impressed. They really knew there stuff. Very detailed answers to any questions we had about the menu. Perfect recommendation on wine choice. The food was fantastic! Well done Ray's!"

  • "I DO understand that Sunday brunch must be tamed down for a gentler audience. That's okay and in no way detracts from the elegance of this restaurant in my mind. Still, I prefer it for dinner, where it exercises license to take bigger risks. There was no Eggs Benedict, but they had a "Benedict Burger", which was not as adventurous as I could get at the Counter. Ordinary American bacon (Irish or Canadian, or ham?) and the sauce was Bernaise, not Hollendaise. Mislabeled, certainly. But no mortal sin, folks…just sayin'…. I WILL continue to visit — no worries."

  • "Each time we dine here we always have to read and re-read the menu to find some dishes that contain ingredients with which we are familiar. Our server, Chip, came to the rescue and offered excellent explanations and helped us with our selections. He was spot on. The chef is incredibly creative. The food is always top notch and beckons us to return. For a restaurant at MOCHA, Ray's is one truly artistic masterpiece."

  • "Lovely afternoon to be sitting outside in the sunshine at LACMA and having a snack, nearly spoiled by very slow service and truly abysmal trendy food. Salad was drowning in dressing, soup tasted terrible, very few special diet choices on the menu. SOoooo much worse than the old restaurant, before Ray's was opened, and not even CLOSE to the restaurant at the Getty"

  • "I have eaten at this restaurant several times before, and it seems things are slipping in the kitchen. I ordered a chopped salad, and it was not at all fresh. My husband had a pizza, and the fixins' on top were very skimpy. It was basically a cheese pizza. The menu is interesting, but execution is lacking. p.s., I wore black pants, and the tables are stocked with white napkins. It would be appreciated if the hostess would routinely offer a black napkin to guests upon arrival (as does Roy's). "

  • "I feel like I'm repeating myself, but I do love this place! This time, we had the best beans ever. The new chef seems to have taken over from Kris Morningstar without missing a beat. My only criticism is that the wine list has been pared down drastically, and some of my favorites are gone."
