Diner Reviews
  • "Generally, the food at Ray's is very very good, but for this lunch it was overly salty -- had a beef rib sandwich which was over-salted and dry. The potato chips that came with were also way too salty."

  • "Special to have dinner right there after seeing the Kandinsky on Monday night. The food was so beautifully presented and yummy. We sat inside, and it was very comfortable. Server was welcoming and helpful. I have eaten in the bar area many times, but I will definitely return for dinner."

  • "I have only had lunch at Ray's. The quality of the food surpassed my expectations. Everything Was fresh, colorful and vibrant with flavor. A great lunch spot"

  • "it doesn't look like much when passing by but the food is good but the drink choices were nothing great. mostly gin and rum bared if that's what you're into. I believes it changes seasonally so i'll be back during the colder months for my whiskey fix."

  • "The location is superb. The bar area beautiful and abuz. The restaurant - visually - sort of what you see at an Agip rest stop on any Italian autostrada. The service excellent - the menu very lackluster and disappointing. While the food tasted fine - I want much more from a LACMA eating venue. Frankly, the food more exciting and varied at their cafeteria style venue (cafe?) across from the Japanese Pavilion. Come on Patina Group, you can do better!"

  • "A wonderful dining experience. I'm looking forward to my next visit. The water menu is perfectly selected. The Campari aperitif was refreshing. Sea Bass? Perfectly cooked and superbly condiment. A must restaurant for foodies."

  • "Just a lovely atmosphere. On a Friday night, listen to jazz, it's busy with a cool vibe of people and it's just lovely to dine outside and imbibe. Great fun!"

  • "Great food and excellent service. I've gone on Friday night a few times while the live Jazz is going on at the museum. A few of us will share a different dishes. Everything is delicious"

  • "A great way to start or finish your visit to LACMA ... good food ... tapas or full meal ... and enjoyable service ... very attentive ..."

  • "The food was above average. The decor is a bit cafeteria-like. Not offensive but not very warm or inviting. Service was attentive, if a bit chaotic (too many people running around and not seeming to have a clear plan as to who was doing what). Nice place to have lunch before a museum visit. Nice little outdoor seating area."

  • "the place was nice, great environment at museum, the staff was great and knowledgeable, but the food is really average. The charcuterie plate was really flat, uninspired and very thin on meats. Perhaps we ordered wrong with the bites plates, but nothing on the mains excited us."

  • "Menu too limited too carb oriented for ladies lunch chop salad VERY disappointing"

  • "First time to Ray's, not the last. Hosted a pre-meeting business lunch here because of location. The place was still busy at 1:30 on a Friday, but we asked for and were given a relatively quiet table in the back. Noise was low enough to have a conversation. Service was excellent, and the food really impressed. My pulled pork sandwich was really interesting with an egg on top, great gooey smokey flavor. Colleagues were very pleased with their salad and house burger. I'll have to try dinner sometime soon."

  • "Enjoyed lunch and the museum, the food, service and environment is a cut above."

  • "We ordered 4 dishes. The Blue Shrimp, Poleta (Pork Belly with crispy Faro and broccolli), Burger Benedict, and fries. The Fries and Burger came out great - those were delicious. The Blue Shrimp came out as a giant plate of green beans with a side of shrimp - 2 pieces of shrimp and the 2/3 of the plate was beans. While the Poleta was deep fried Faro that was so difficult to eat it felt like eating bird seed. The Porky Belly was chopped up and deep fried so small that you could barely tell they were there. It should be called Deep Fried Faro with a hint of Pork Belly ... Misleading Menus. Quite disappointing to be honest."

  • "I booked this restaurant specifically to try their grilled octopus. I saw great reviews about it on the website and yelp. We were disappointed to find out it was not offered or it has not been offered for a while. They told you us the website menu has not been updated for a while."

  • "Understaffed. Restaurant inside was like an oven. Outside was crowded and slow service. Pizza tasted like it was microwaved. Pasta was bathed in salt."

  • "I took my lady there last night to celebrate her birthday. The only thing better than the amazing food, was the service. I used open table for the first time when booking the reservation. I added the info about her birthday & they took care of the rest. We will be back for sure! The staff, everyone from the hostess at the door to our waitress (Christine) to the other servers that helped out,... We were very impressed. They really knew there stuff. Very detailed answers to any questions we had about the menu. Perfect recommendation on wine choice. The food was fantastic! Well done Ray's!"

  • "I feel like I'm repeating myself, but I do love this place! This time, we had the best beans ever. The new chef seems to have taken over from Kris Morningstar without missing a beat. My only criticism is that the wine list has been pared down drastically, and some of my favorites are gone."

  • "I DO understand that Sunday brunch must be tamed down for a gentler audience. That's okay and in no way detracts from the elegance of this restaurant in my mind. Still, I prefer it for dinner, where it exercises license to take bigger risks. There was no Eggs Benedict, but they had a "Benedict Burger", which was not as adventurous as I could get at the Counter. Ordinary American bacon (Irish or Canadian, or ham?) and the sauce was Bernaise, not Hollendaise. Mislabeled, certainly. But no mortal sin, folks…just sayin'…. I WILL continue to visit — no worries."

  • "Lovely afternoon to be sitting outside in the sunshine at LACMA and having a snack, nearly spoiled by very slow service and truly abysmal trendy food. Salad was drowning in dressing, soup tasted terrible, very few special diet choices on the menu. SOoooo much worse than the old restaurant, before Ray's was opened, and not even CLOSE to the restaurant at the Getty"

  • "Each time we dine here we always have to read and re-read the menu to find some dishes that contain ingredients with which we are familiar. Our server, Chip, came to the rescue and offered excellent explanations and helped us with our selections. He was spot on. The chef is incredibly creative. The food is always top notch and beckons us to return. For a restaurant at MOCHA, Ray's is one truly artistic masterpiece."

  • "I have eaten at this restaurant several times before, and it seems things are slipping in the kitchen. I ordered a chopped salad, and it was not at all fresh. My husband had a pizza, and the fixins' on top were very skimpy. It was basically a cheese pizza. The menu is interesting, but execution is lacking. p.s., I wore black pants, and the tables are stocked with white napkins. It would be appreciated if the hostess would routinely offer a black napkin to guests upon arrival (as does Roy's). "

  • "Food was so salty, I had to send salad back. Service was so very slow. We waited from the time we sat down until our main course came, one hour."

  • "A lovely spot to have lunch when going to the museum. A choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Open, casual and fun."

  • "I would not recommend. We were made to feel very uncomfortable. The waiter paid zero attention to us while focusing his attention on a couple of tables where the alcohol was flowing. We had to ask for every little thing menus, water, bread...to a point where it was ridiculous. One of the worst service experiences ever. Will never return and will never recommend. If it allowed zero stars for service I would not have put one."

  • "I took my mother and her friend her for my mom's birthday. The food was delicious and beautiful! Then we enjoyed an afternoon at LACMA. I would definitely recommend Ray's. "

  • "Every time I eat here I comment that the food is way, way too salty. It never changes even though I have been told that they do change chefs. I think I am finished eating there. I may have a drink and cheese but that is it."

  • "Intriguing menu. This was my first experience at Ray's, but I'm sure I'll return to try some of the other dishes on the menu. The ingredients are all from their own garden. I had the Manila Clams and they were excellent. The dessert menu all looks delicious! We split the Mixed Berry dessert and it was excellent!"

  • "Our service could not have been better. The waiter was very knowledgeble and helped us decide on our courses. The food was of excellent quality and prepared beautifully. The combinations were unique and very tasty. Unfortunately we did not have room for desert. Next time!"

  • "There were only 3 waiters that night. They were working as hard as they could but someone obviously did not schedule correctly. Summer is coming and LACMA has several events planned. Ray's need to check the LACMA special events schedule and plan accordingly. "

  • "the group at ray's stark is really wonderful -- martin, the manager, is lovely and the hostess is so sweet. the food is very foodie, but their classics (like pizza, cheeses, chopped salad) are always reliable and delicious. the seasonal veggies are excellent. "

  • "This was our first time at Ray's and Stark and we enjoyed the space and dining our on a warm spring evening. Food was pretty good, too. It's likely we'd go back a second time, but interestingly the service was not up to par as there was a dinner rush after a LACMA event of some kind finished. Surprisingly, the restaurant seemed unprepared for what should have been an expected surge in diners. Our server was running from table to table and almost breathless when she stopped by our table."

  • "You can't beat the food, service or atmosphere. We started with Sunday lunch at Ray's, went on to enjoy the museum, then came back to Stark Bar for cocktails and dessert. Always a treat, whether it's lunch, dinner or meeting up for a drink -- a perfect place. "

  • "Perfect choice for Saturday brunch with friends. Enjoyed pork belly with grits along with a unique cocktail. Shared small plates of wonderfully cooked carrots & spring peas. Terrific for chatting and people watching. And the art museum is right there to extend such a good start to the day."

  • "We've never had a bad experience here. From the service to the drinks to the food to the design- all excellent. Add in the great view of LACMA and what could go wrong!"

  • "My friend and I had been to Ray's before, and the service was fantastic. This time the service was terrible. "
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "We've dined here often enough to appreciate the talent in the kitchen, but cannot understand why there are so few offerings for gluten-free diners whether small plate, entree, or dessert offerings. Also, the service can be maddeningly slow and indifferent , even during weekend afternoons when barely half the tables are filled. "
