Diner Reviews
  • "I made a reservation and we sat outside. The service and food were excellent."

  • "Maybe the restaurant was short-staffed, but there was little to no service--had to wait for water and ask for utensils. I heard one customer complain coffee was cold, and my iced tea tasted like yesterday's over-sweetened mix. Food was fine, but nothing special. And there weren't very many diners, so it wasn't a rush or crowd that made the difference. The menu was very limited too, surprisingly. I would not recommend or go again, a disappointment as I had heard so many great things about Plates."

  • "Food was amazing - lunch menu was great. Apps and salads are not to be missed!"

  • "We ordered cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and dessert. All were fantastic! I cannot say enough. The staff was very friendly and helpful, as well. I highly recommend a visit to Plates!"

  • "My husband and I had a delicious evening at Plates. We'd intended to try this place sooner, finally made it on a rainy evening. We shared the crab beignets and charcuterie plate. Beignets were light, hot and quite tasty. Charcuterie was well presented and a delightful combination of flavors. Ribeye was cooked to order and my dessert of vanilla panne cotta w fresh peaches was just light enough to finish the evening. Husband lives his sticky toffee pudding - a Plates dignature"

  • "The chicken soup was nondescript and the cup of soup was served in a tiny ramekin that seemed to hold about 1/2 cup; the ice cream scoop the size of a large walnut (I kid you not). The crab beignets were good, but overall the meal was very unsubstantial and not particularly flavorful. The menu is very small, almost as if food is an afterthought. Perhaps this is a neighborhood watering hole at night? A charming outdoor space and pleasant indoor space -- but many other restaurants offer so much more selection, flavor, quality and food for the $20 I spent on lunch. Perhaps dinner is different? I always want to see neighborhood restaurants do well... so comments are offered in hopes the restaurant tweeks its concept and prospers."

  • "The food was outstanding, reasonably priced, and perfect for a group of friends out for dinner !"

  • "Service was outstanding (they sat us earlier than our reservation despite the dinner service not having started yet because we had an early concert to attend). Food was a mixed bag - very small menu (seems to be farm to table model, so it changes frequently and they concentrate on a small number of dishes) although a good selection if you didn't like something in particular (seafood, chicken, beef, veggie). The barratta and tomato/basil salad was fabulous. My wife really liked the grouper main course, but my steak was so undercooked (asked for medium rare and it was practically blue) with what tasted like boxed potatoes (no seasoning at all to them - bland, uniform, mush). The lemon tart was outstanding, but the chocolate/smore not so."

  • "great outdoor dog friendly dining place. Service was great and knew the menu well and made excellent recommendations"

  • "While I miss the former restaurant, Zely and Ritz, the Chefs at Plates have done an exceptional job with the menu. Everything I had was delicious. Our table enjoyed the mussels, the cheese plate, foie gras, LOTS of fresh baked foccicia, steak and chicken. Everything was done right. The service was great as well. They were attentive and had a great sense of humor. I will absolutely be returning and highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Things started a bit slow as the staff was a little overwhelmed with an influx of customers. Once I approached a staff member, Garrett, things switched into a very personable and pleasurable experience. Our server, Amanda, took great pride in the food and wine list and we had fun going back and forth while ordering. She made great recommendations and really tuned into our table. Brandon, the manager, made it a point to stop by during the meal and at the end to ensure the 'recovery' was successful. Every restaurant experiences a glitch in service when the unexpected happens. The true measure of professionalism is how they handle and recover. A job well done! We'll be back!"

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful dinner last night. We sat outside on a balmy June evening and enjoyed both our dinner and service. Our waitress Amanda was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I had corn stuffed pork roll with pickled peaches on grits and my wife had the ribeye. The pork was flavorful, tender with a great crunch of corn and sweet/sour peaches. The steak was cooked perfectly to order and well seasoned. What's not to like!"

  • "Refreshing app (the green basil in the burrata caprese was fine, but the purple basil had no flavor), two excellent entrees (tuna and ratatouille), and the Sticky Toffee Pudding will bring us back again."

  • "We had the crab beignets for appetizer and they were excellent. For entree, we had the Cajan Roaster Chicken. It was flavorful, good and presentation and accompanied by excellent side. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Dinning here was an excellent experience which we would recommend to anyone."

  • "Loved the chef's use of sweet potatoes in the salad and in the soup of the day. All food items were wonderful, and it was nice to dine in a restaurant where we could have a conversation without shouting - the noise level was perfect. We will return."

  • "My wife and I came here after she went with her girlfriend the weekend before. She missed out on their quiche the previous week (arrived at 1230 or so) so we went at 1215. She was able to get the quiche this time and enjoyed it, as did I. The host was extremely accommodating and allowed us to sit at one of the long rectangle tables so we could enjoy the shade as all the smaller outdoor tables were taken or in the shade. She also came back for bottomless mimosas, I didn't try them but she was able to finish a carafe. They gave her her own carafe which was nice as there seemed to be quite a bit of time that passed in between refills before the carafe. My food was excellent also. There are not many brunch items on the menu. You will enjoy!"

  • "Hostess sat us immediately, filled water glasses quickly. Cocktail and beer list was inviting - I had a Hendricks gin/st Germaine and hubby had a craft beer (daughter stuck with water) The appetizer selections were creative and hard to make a choice. We decided to share a platter of Crab Beignets. Very tasty! And the dipping sauce had the perfect zing. Ample portion, plenty for the three of us to share. Entrees- husband had rare yellowtail tuna. He raved!!! (in fact, 3 days later he's still complimenting the dish) Daughter & I chose med rare Ribeye steaks. Internal temp perfect but outside was a blah gray. Steaks had little flavor and much gristle. We shared a Strawberry Shortcake- YUM and non traditional presentation. "

  • "Do you like really small tables and really big menus? Do you like charcuterie plates with tasteless cuts of meat and pate that reminds you of phlegm? Do you like a cocktail with a funny name that tastes like a used band aid? Do you like your steaks to appear large, but be really really thin? Well....I have the place for you!"

  • "My husband and I were excited to try Plates. We had a nice table outside and enjoyed the atmosphere and buzz of Glenwood South. However, the service was very poor. Our server was incredibly slow and inattentive and was seen chatting with other people instead of waiting tables. We could not catch his eye, and my husband resorted to walking over to him to get his attention. In addition, a lemon caipirinha cocktail was undrinkable, and we returned it. The bartender was very nice and fixed something else, but even the new cocktail was not great. We ordered an appetizer salad, but it came AFTER the main entree, so we ended up just trying to eat it all at once. There is potential here, but the staff needs more training."

  • "My husband and I went to Plates for brunch to celebrate my birthday. I had an inventive vegetable hash and eggs and side of salad; my husband had a burger. Food was fresh and delicious, and the mimosas prepared with ample Champagne. My husband had ordered creme brulee (I don't eat wheat) as a surprise dessert, but the menu had changed. Instead the kitchen prepared three scoops of different frozen desserts--pear and strawberry sorbet, coconut ice cream-- on a bed of fresh strawberries and topped with whipped cream. They wrote happy birthday in chocolate icing on the plate. We thank Steve and his crew for the special care they took to make our celebration memorable. We'll be back."

  • "I was looking forward to my meal at Plates. I ordered pancakes, whick were fine. The strawberries, which I ordered on the side, were OK. The fresh fruit, also on the side, was sad: 4 red grapes, 3 small pieces of pineapple and 3 pieces of watermelon, with the seeds still in them. The small container of syrup was cold and the 2 pieces of butter were STONE COLD. The pancakes would never have melted that butter. Also, had THE WORST Bloody Mary I have ever had. I had certainly hoped for a better experience. I will say that the hostess who met us upon arrival was most friendly."

  • "Went for the first time for Mother's Day brunch and really enjoyed it. Moms were greeted with roses at the door and a special menu - including tasty bottomless mimosas. There were lots of menu options and the starter banana bread was very good. Will definitely try another time!"

  • "The various starters and entrees were and interesting combination of local ingredients. The entree menu was adequate. The pork chop I had was flawless and almost fat free...high praise to the farm used. The way it was "spiced" depends on one's taste buds. My partner's ribeye, once again, was excellent meat which might have been spiced differently for her taste. The table next to us had starters which were exactly that...brief tastes. Apparently, the couple liked them. Our waiter was friendly and checked the table often. The dessert, carrot cake, was the best I have ever eaten in my 72 years and I would return for that alone."

  • "I read the N&O review I wanted to give this place a try. WOW! The menu is small, uses locally sourced ingredients and the food is just superb! The charcuterie plate was a plate of pure heaven. My friend had the halibut that she loved, and I had the pasta primivera with all sorts of fresh veggies and a light, non-greasy tomato sauce. It was her birthday and they brought a slice of the sticky toffee cake with a candle for her (really nice touch) at no charge. We also tried the carrot cake. Our server was fantastic, not only taking great care of us, but cracking jokes and helping us with our selections. Wines were not the usual, but were really good and Garrette, our server helped us find the perfect glasses for each of us."

  • "The first pleasure when dining at Plates is trying to decide which of the unique and interesting dishes you will enjoy. Each menu item has complexity which as a whole is a delight to the palate. We had a hard time deciding what to get so ordered several things and then ordered the strawberry pancakes as a dessert. It was all delicious! We also loved the bottomless mimosas. Yum. "
