A word from Ouisie's Table
Known by generations for her hospitality, proprietress Elouise Adams Jones, a.k.a. Ouisie, serves an eclectic collection of Southern foods with an excellent wine list to match. High ceilings and fans in the main dining room it evoke the ambiance of a Texas manor house. The adjacent dining porch overlooking the patio and garden, as well as Cooper’s Wine Bin, provide additional dining and entertaining areas. The daily fare encompasses traditional offerings like her well-loved pimento cheese, the shrimp and grits, and the popular Gulf Coast oysters to the favorite Tuesday special Ouisie’s award winning chicken fried steak with corn pudding. A fine plate of grilled Prime beef tenderloin or a brace of quail stuffed with super lump crab meat with Cognac glaze are good examples of the daily specials one might find on the blackboard.

  • "Ouisie's Table is consistently outstanding. We hoped to sit on The Porch (the interior, enclosed porch which is somewhat less formal than the main dining room), but a special event required we sit in the dining room. It worked beautifully, even though there were a few, large groups in the dining room. The sound is adequately muted, so the noisy groups did not disturb our quieter lunch with my elderly mother. Service was a bit erratic due to the special Porch event, I assume, but we were not in a hurry, so it was fine. This was the first time, ever, Ouisie's service wasn't absolutely impeccable, but it was by no means bad, just a bit off from the normally superb service."

  • "Had wanted to try Ouisie's Table for some time. Had been unable to get a reservation until recently. Very pleased. Very relaxed neighborhood feel. Looking forward to taking advantage of the patio sometime soon before it gets hot. Menu had a nice variety with other than the same tired entrees. Bison tenderloin was very good. Also their wine prices are very reasonable which is a big plus for me. This is the sister restaurant of The Bird an The Bear on Westheimer."

Our waiter was attentive but welcomed us taking our time to decide on entrees. Mini breads are amazing, Corn pudding is delicious, bacon wrapped filet is juicy, and lemon pie is a creamy delight."

  • "Have been coming to Ouisie's for breakfast meetings for years. The waitress was incredibly rude time and again to my client and myself. We had to request coffee 4 times during the first 10 minutes - it hadn't finished brewing (at 9am) andcream was a no-show. The food was slammed on the table. Hash browns were a burned 'potato cake'. Toast came after eggs were eaten - Waitress was affronted that my client asked for jam - didn't have strawberry. Totally horrible experience. Shared this with Manager, Sam, he should have been out there observing the distasteful attitude. Don't know where he was hiding. Will not go back and will not recommend to real estate groups that I am a member."

  • "Have had brunch here before. Lovely and serves bottomless mimosa, sparkling wine (which is a must for Sunday Brunch). However, portions small. This past Sunday had a cup of carrot/ ginger soup. Soup was excellent but cup was more like 1/2 cup. Also had crab cake eggs Benedict. Surprised to receive one 1/2 an English muffin with crab cake the size of a little smaller than a 1/2 dollar. Crab cake eggs Benedict also served with decent amount of fruit. Soup was a la carte. Crab cake eggs Benedict with fruit was $18.00. Overpriced. Also ordered a side of cheese grits because I suspected I needed a filler. Didn't bring out until EGG Benedict finished. Delightful atmosphere but not satisfying for "the hungry"."

  • "This Houston institution provides quality food, service and ambiance in a very central location. We are always quickly seated, our reservation time honored and our drink orders are quickly taken. The waitstaff is pleasant and management ever present. Our group had a good time and the wine enthusiast was pleased with the selections offered. The menu is Southern with a twist. The Shrimp and grits is excellent as are the fried oysters. Be warned, however, much of the food, especially the sauces have a "kick!""

Noise level in restaurant is very low compared to other restaurants in Houston (which is a big plus for me). Overall good quality but little more expensive than I thought justified."

One can actually hold a conversation in any of the spaces (not always the case for Houston restaurants). We typically prefer the less formal porch, but the dining room is lovely and not too formal. Ouisie's strikes a perfect balance on all accounts."

  • "Our party of 4 couples chose Ouisie's Table for our annual group Valentine's Day dinner based on my and my husband's prior positive dining experiences at the restaurant. As usual, the ambiance was lovely. A string duo performed beautifully at the perfect volume in the main dining room. The waiter was attentive but was a bit brusque. The food for the entire table was disappointing. I ordered Ouisie's famous Shrimp and Grits as my main course. The shrimp were as small as salad shrimp and the dish was lukewarm. The rest of our party's meals were similarly disappointing. One other couple who also regularly eats at Ouisie's said they had never had such poor food at the restaurant and couldn't understand it."

Of our three meals the Sea Bass was old tasting, shrimp in Curry were tough and undercooked, the Crab Cake entree was good. 1 out of 3 average does not rate a return visit."

  • "This restaurant has a good reputation. Unfortunately, this was not our experience. Signature dishes were generally off-putting. Lobster mash potatoes tasted "fishy". Shrimp were tough (overcooked) in Shrimp and cheesy grits. Chicken fried steak was overcooked. There was a large group in a private dining room which required most of the waiters, resulting in no wait staff in the main restaurant, at times."

  • "This was my first time to Ousie's and I had high hopes based on everything I had heard from people and read about the restaurant. Unfortunately, my choice to have a late Sunday afternoon brunch appeared to be a mistake, as the service was incredibly slow and lackluster. We were informed at the end of the meal by our server that there was a large party in the front of the restaurant, but that should not have had an impact on our meal. The drinks were very lackluster as well. I ordered one of their signature drinks and was brought something totally different, and when the waitress returned with what I had originally ordered, it was extremely disappointing, tasting much more like a glass of wine than a champagne cocktail. Just an ok place."

  • "2nd time to eat here and not impressed. Our reservation was at 7:45, we did not get seated until 8:25. Service was slow, food was not hot and one of the plates had a rubber and on the meat. They did comp that but doubt we will go back as both occasions were not good. Take your chance!"

  • "Delicious food, lovely atmosphere. This is where a Yankee learns to love grits! Our food was outstanding and service was top-notch. However...we were disappointed with our table location. I made this reservation in early January through Open Table. I requested a romantic location as it was Valentine's Day and because I'd never been there. We thought with such early notice that would not be a problem. Unfortunately we were seated adjacent to the kitchen, near the bar and positioned at two walkways. When shown our table I asked for a better location but was told none was available. The only solution was to take the table and sit with our backs to the kitchen."

  • "My wife and I have dined at Ousie's many times over the years, dating back to their days on Sunset Blvd. We took a group to Ousie's to celebrate a family birthday. The food was excellent, but the behavior of our waiter will probably cause me to look elsewhere in the future. The waiter did everything he could to convince us to order wines and cocktails that we did not want. We were asked, at least four times, about ordering wine. We were pretty clear the first time and absolutely clear the second time. The waiter delayed in taking our order until we insisted -- after we had been seated for more than 30 minutes. Great food, but I won't go back to a place that so blatantly pushes their wine sales."

  • "We've been to Ouisie's several times in the past and had a great time so I booked it for my husband birthday, which happened to be Valentine's Day weekend as well. I realize that is a big weekend for restaurants but it was obvious the staff/kitchen could not handle the amount of people there - everyone seemed overwhelmed. It was a special menu which was the first bummer as we have favorites from the every day menu, our table sent at least 4 cocktails back because they were terrible, the salads (we all ordered a differnet one) were awful and the entrees were sub par. Dessert was really the only highlight - we had 4 and they were all fabulous. All in all it was a very disappointmenting meal. Highly doubt we will go back again."

After being sat, we discovered that the problem was the waitstaff, who kept us waiting and slowed the dining experience. The food was very good, and worth the wait, but the food deserved better than the service."

  • "We booked a reservation via open table and called to confirm the day prior, but when we arrived we were told there was a 40 min wait. I am 37 weeks pregnant so my husband and I were really disappointed. My husband talked to the hostess to try to accommodate an earlier seating but not much effort was made and we ended up standing and waiting the full 40 mins. Food was ok...shrimp and grits very average. I don't know if it was an off night for Ouisies' as I've heard very good reviews but I will not be rushing back here as I was less than impressed."
