A word from Open Range
Open Range is a relaxed steakhouse and lounge serving Alberta beef, lamb and game in an easygoing southwest style.

Open Range has been a top three finalist in Where Magazine's "Where to Dine Awards" - 2009 & 2010 "Best Canadian Regional Dining", and 2011 "Best Alberta Beef."

We are a unique steakhouse for Calgary because we are chef owned and operated. Chef Dwayne Ennest' back-to-basics approach is about using seasonal ingredients from local farms, and preparing his creative dishes by hand from start to finish.

  • "I've only ever had their burgers and that's only because they're so damn good I've not bothered to venture beyond them. I love the atmosphere. It's very chill and relaxing. I find the price of most items to be on the high side, but it's on par with the level of class they've cultivated. This also speaks to why I keep getting the burger, but it really is outstanding. My partner requires Gluten-free options and the last time we went she had a fish dish. She was extremely satisfied by it."

We appreciate the great atmosphere - the contemporary western art & fun, eclectic sound track, and we enjoy the service, which is understated, informal and yet totally professional. But even more, we enjoy the menu, which features locally sourced Alberta produce, domestic meat and game prepared in imaginative (and tasty) ways. When I host friends and business associates from out of town, I like to take them to Open Range, because it represents the best of what contemporary Alberta has to offer."

  • "This is my 2nd visit to Open Range and I will say that I was fantastic again. The food was to die for. 2 of us had the Elk and it was just amazing. The other meal was equally amazing as well.   • "Had a bday dinner at Open Range. First time there. Paid corkage and brought my own wine. Started with the buffalo bresaola with fontina cheese and tapenade. The buffalo was execellant but I found the strong tapenade overpowered it. I preffered the buffalo with the cheese and bread and no tapenade. Also had the escargot which was good. After much debate I decided to try the porterhouse project for two. What a mistake. The steak was really tough. There is no way this was a triple A cut of meat. We did not finish it. I would expect steakhouse steak to be as good as if not better than what I can do at home. I should have got the beef tenderloin. I noticed most others were ordering that. Desert was great. Service was excellant."

  • "The duck was amazing as was the bison flank steak. I don't recommend eating anythign other than game or red meat as that is the specialty. Nice atmosphere. Very relaxing. someplace you'd go to spend a couple hours chatting and enjoyng great food."

  • "Great service, and wonderful food. Open Range has the best Chef in the city. He can take unrelated things and produce amazing food. My wife had an appy that was rabit, cheese, and some sort of cream. It was a wonderful taste. She followed by with Short Ribs - whcih we have eaten more than once over the years. Always wonderful. I had the porterhouse and it was perfect. Thanks for another wonderful meal! Michael"

  • "I held a group meeting with a few local associates and a vendor travelling from the US recently at Open Range. The evening was fantastic. The service was very good. The food was excellent. Not a single person left without commenting on how pleased they were with the different choices around the table. For a last minute reservation, the establishment handled our group of 8 no problem. Highly recommended from a romantic dinner for two all the way up to a larger group. You won't be disappointed."

Both times we've been we've had very friendly service, and the food was very good, although we ordered the "steak to share" (or something along those lines) with the chimichurri sauce the first visit, and wished we'd had it again as it may very well be the best thing on the menu! Definitely somewhere I'd recommend visiting more than once!"

  • "The prime rib was the best I have ever had, and the offered freshly ground horseradish was a wonderful addition that gave it another level of flavour, enhancing what was already a wonderful tasting piece of meet as was the gravy. The waiter allowed me to switch the potatoes to a sweet potato hash with other veggies. For dessert, I had the flour-less chocolate cake, with homemade chocolate ice-cream. There was a lovely raspberry sauce drizzled on it and a deliciously candied orange slice. It was a truly heavenly. I had a lovely cup of tea with it and just sat and soaked in the lovely ambiance which pays homage to Calgary's ranching heritage. Fabulous meal, Fabulous environment, Fabulous staff. A very wonderful evening. A new favourite."

  • "It wasn't a bad experience but it also wasn't a very notable one. We were sat right by the door in a nearly empty restaurant. It was quite annoying to have the door open multiple times and have everyone who wanted to eat walk past us, but that's being nit picky. The service was wonderful, and our waiter was very informative. The food though was , just okay, nothing at all special nor worth the price. It might be better for the normal meats, but I won't be back to try more."

  • "I've been to Open Range for several times now and every visit was pleasant. Tried the porterhouse cut with my wife and ordered sturgeon steak for my mom. The porterhouse was amazing and the Scallop Potatoes and Spring Asparagus when you do 'make it for two' made it even better. My mom was a traditional Chinese and yet she found the sturgeon tasteful and delicious. BTW the organic field greens salad was also a surprise, my wife commented this salad as best salad she ever had. Overall, there's never complains when I go to Open Range. It's a perfect place for steak lovers and a quiet place for those who wanted to stay away from noisy downtown restaurants."

  • "I decided to bring our friend here, as he is from the West Coast and I wanted a place that showcased locally sourced foods. We were here on a Tuesday night, good for our group as it gave us a good chance to chat in a quiet environment - not sure what it's like on the weekends or when really busy. The table was great - an oval and so easy for the 5 of us to visit (I hate long narrow tables!). Our server was attentive and friendly throughout the entire occasion. The ony complaint I have is that there appeared to be a draft at the floor level (yes, it was minus 20 outside!). However, I had boots on and my feet were frozen by the end of our meal. Our guest laughed and said only in Alberta would there be a portable heater at the entrance."

  • "Our evening with friends was on a cold Friday night at Open Range. The welcoming staff and warm decor soon replaced our shivers The general feeling was welcoming, attentive and informative. The menu included something wonderful for everyone. Our appetizer was sharable and included delightful "bites" of elk, lamb, duck, ostrich and beef. We enjoyed main courses of Elk , Steak, Duck and Chicken. Each so good there was some moments of "we are like family …. have a taste. It is so good" The serving sizes were "just right" so we had room for dessert.. Pecan Pie. :) Fabulous evening. We all agreed that Open Range is on our Recommendation list."

  • "The food for the four of us was ok but certainly Nothing to write home about. The appetizers were quite good. Then I had the wild boar which was tender but the vegetables were cold and tasteless. My husbands meal was one he felt could be obtained at any cheap restaurant. We all felt that the experience was not worth the huge price we paid. We would not recommend friends to visit this restaurant. There are plenty of other places where you can spend the same exorbitant amount of money and come away saying WOW I sure would go back."

  • "We were very pleased at, and surprised by, the excellence of the cuisine, service, and ambiance. We chose the restaurant because it i participates in the MealShare venture. In our case, we ordered two MealShare items - the appetizer(duck wraps) and the dessert (crunchy apple slices in vavnilla bean ice cream). Both were delicious. We also ordered the free range chicken and the 24-oz Porterhouse steak dinner for two. Outstanding! Our waitress, Shannon, was enthusiastic and attentive. She did not, however, make special mention of the MealShare items nor explain the programme to us. Fortunately, we already knew about it. We recommend that you highlight the MealShare restaurants on your webpage and review feedback questionnaire."

  • "Menu options was set but very nice. The option to choose your course was also a nice touch in the dinner. The main entree had perfert seasoning and tasted excellent. Our desired meat was overdone, but it was so tasty you felt only obligated to advise the chef but with no compaint - I would recommend this restaurant to anyone... the only slight loss of a star is the setup. The ambience is just not their when you have tables on either side of you with the outside parameter restaturant setup they have... Nice dinner table separate for one another is my only recommendation. I don't care to hear the conversation of my neighbors, and I am sure they don't care to hear ours."

  • "Enjoyed dinner the day after Valentine's day. The restaurant was busy & we were seated in the lounge area, but it was so nice, we didn't know it was the lounge. There was a cozy fireplace lit behind our table. I enjoyed a bison burger which was very tasty. Some of the sweet potato fries were not quite cooked all the way through. No big deal, really. My friends enjoyed the Arctic Char. Our calamari appetizer was very good, too. The wine list was extensive, but the waiter offered us options not listed. I was able to get a Pinot Grigio by the glass from next door (Big Fish) which was not on the menu. The girls got a full bottle of wine which normally was only by the glass. We appreciated those options being offered to us."

  • "Two friends and I met here for dinner on a very cold Tuesday night. We arrived at opening time, 5pm. We all had the steak and lobster special which was excellent, only thing is it cooled off incredible fast as the plates were ice cold. Warm your plates up please...it's a simple thing really. Steak and Lobster special was excellent...though the lobstertail was a bit small, I should have ordered 2. Steak was a good size and cooked beutifully. There were 3 of us and we ordered a medium, a medium well, and a rare and all were cooked perfectly."

  • "We've been to Open Range three times and the first two were great. The food is pretty good and it's very close to home. This time, however, we were enjoying our second bottle of wine, having finished dinner. Our server was excellent and was offering us dessert and another bottle of wine which we declined. Shortly after that a different server who had not been serving us came over and abruptly said "we need this table back in seven minutes." At this point we had been at the restaurant less than two hours which I don't find excessive for two courses and two bottles of wine and we still had wine in our glasses. I will not be returning to Open Range and I will look for restaurants that will let me relax and enjoy a meal after a long week."

A little help from the wait staff not to mention the chef could have prevented this. Just because it is available doesn't make it good."
