A word from Open Range
Open Range is a relaxed steakhouse and lounge serving Alberta beef, lamb and game in an easygoing southwest style.

Open Range has been a top three finalist in Where Magazine's "Where to Dine Awards" - 2009 & 2010 "Best Canadian Regional Dining", and 2011 "Best Alberta Beef."

We are a unique steakhouse for Calgary because we are chef owned and operated. Chef Dwayne Ennest' back-to-basics approach is about using seasonal ingredients from local farms, and preparing his creative dishes by hand from start to finish.

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to open range several times, and it is always a pleasure. The food is excellent (especially the boar), and the service is always great. Would highly recommend it."

  • "Great food and awesome service, first time being there and the waitress was very informative on food favorites and recommendations for wine. We had the bison flank and beef tenderloin, along with the ribs and sourdough cheese stuffed bread as apps. Reasonably priced (cheaper compared to Vintage, Ceasers, Catch) and portions were perfect - food was filling and tasted real ( organic beets and potatoes alongside locally sourced products). The atmosphere was rustic with comfortable seating and a positive ambience which allowed good conversation. Would highly recommend Open Range for the best steakhouse in Calgary. Next time will be trying the elk and sturgeon steak!"

  • "Marrow bones are awesome, they stay true to butchers with Porter house steaks, wild boar chops and elk, to name but a few. Arctic char and sturgeon available. Not just a steak house. Sauces and glazes are delicious. Servers knowledgeable about wine pairings. Excellent date night spot for my wife and I."

  • "Definitely a pleasent experience. Nice for LOCALly raised meat so also good for entertaining out of towners and business meetinga"

  • "I wanted to find a great steakhouse and I found it. Had the Porterhouse, tomato bisque, scalloped potatoes (awesome), and chocolate torte for dessert, all were some of the best I've ever had. Ambiance was...odd, old western music and hard to describe decor, but I really liked it and it worked. Servers were great and even went out of their way to spend time with some overly chatty customers. I would be back more often but it's pretty pricey (for us), but it's worth it depending on the occasion."

  • "Im still thinking about it 48 hours later. My favorite restaurant in Calgary for years now. Never dissapointed."

  • "What a cool and different restaurant. We all enjoyed every bite of our meals at open range and since we all shared we tried quite a few things on the menu. The steak porterhouse was amazing! I Highly recommend a visit to this restaurant."

  • "Elk steak was tough, no vegtables with the lamb and prices were very high for the quality of the food"
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "Fantastic. Great food. Greg the server is very knowledgeable"

  • "Would highly recommend. Great variety on menu. Items you don't normally find and price is great for what you get."

  • "Everything is amazing at this restaurant. It really is my favorite restaurant in Calgary. The food is exceptional. Recommend this to everyone."

  • "We dine out very infrequently but Open Range was recently recommended to us. We were impressed by the nice selection of wines and beers available (although I ended up choosing a martini). The meals were wonderful - I seldom eat beef .... so when a craving for filet comes along .... it's critical that it be cooked to perfection .... as it was ! We always try to support a local establishment (as opposed to chain type restaurants). The ambience of Open Range was very enjoyable = quiet and intimate - just ideal for a date night !"

  • "We took our parents here after a play and thoroughly enjoyed the local artists' displays, and the "local" menu's variety - the ribs starter and pecan pie are a must-try. Great wine list, great food - we will be back. Parking is limited so plan to park a block or 2 away."

  • "We come to this place regularly, there are two sides of it, and we love both of them - big fish and open range. Great menu, friendly staff and wonderful environment!!!"

  • "We had been given a gift certificate to "Open Range" and had no idea what to expect. What a fun surprise! Loved the decor and the service was awesome! A little on the pricey side but everyone's meal was excellent. Would recommend for a special occasion."

  • "I found the food to be pretty good and the server was very knowledgeable in all the foods we had questions about."

  • "Would definitely come again. Food was very good. Goat cheesecake is a definite must."

  • "Open Range is always great. The food is pretty heavy for summer, but it's so delicious you won't mind at all. The service is friendly and attentive without being annoying. The variety of meats served is outstanding, and the appetizers never fail to please."

  • "Lovely local ingredients prepared wonderfully. Fantastic service and a few interesting cocktails."

  • "We had great service to start, our waiter was very knowledgeable. The casual country themed decor was great with beautiful furniture, and great paintings hanging all around, a very nice atmosphere to enjoy food with friends/family. My prime rib arrived perfectly prepared at medium rare with a side of fresh horseradish which was fantastic, and the fresh veggies they use are just amazing. I also had the goat cheese cheesecake, which was a nice treat. Next time, I'm gonna bring some wine drinkers because their wine list is very extensive and well thought out. Some people may have an issue with the price, but I checked Open Range against The Keg, and you would pay almost exactly the same there but not get near the quality of food or service."

  • "I ate here the other day. We ordered the prime rib from the Stampede menu. There is a lot of flavour going on with this dish. I do it no justice in trying to describe it, but I can say that it was interesting/unique, and I mean that in the best possible way. I reserve 5 star ratings for places that truly excite/surprise me, and very very few places manage that (I can't even think of one in Calgary). The four stars I give could easily be someone else's five. Really, this is a very good restaurant. It's quaint, well staffed, and there are some nice paintings on the walls to look at. Would be an awesome date spot for a romantic night."

  • "My guests were very happy with their dinners but I was less so. My lamb shank was dark brown and it tasted burned. My mashed potatoes were purple, made with purple potatoes...perhaps not a good choice. On the other hand, one of my guests chose the porterhouse steak and he said it was cooked perfectly. The one who chose the New York steak said it was very tender and cooked the way he had asked. Also, I don't think we should have to pay for bread and it should be brought to the table automatically, not ordered."

  • "Shannon was our server and made our experience amazing! The food and drinks were worth every penny. My wife had the Duck and it was so delicious. I had the Porterhouse project so delicious. I recommend Open Range to anyone."

  • "Have had many meals here - all great. Hope last time (June 28th) was just a blip on the radar. Beef tenderloins X 2 arrived with a burnt and bitter crust and were cooked medium to medium well but were ordered medium rare. On both plates the mushroom ragout held very few mushrooms and what was presented was inedible - too tough to cut through. One steak was sent back but after 10 minutes the new one arrived well done. Elk medallions were tasty but one had too much sinew to eat. One dish (the bison burger) was, as usual , great but yam fries were too soggy to eat. Although our server was apologetic and adjusted the bill there's no excusing the kitchen for this poor quality. We plan to return as previous meals were consistent and delicious."

  • "Service, food quality and variety, and fabulous drinks makes this place one of our favourites, especially when we are entertaining out-of-towners. We consistently leave full and happy!"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Slow service no matter what. Busy or not, always slow. Food takes way too long to come out, and service is just too slow in general."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Great food, casual fine dining, fantastic service and thought the ambience was wonderfully unexpected based on the name. Definitely will return."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "Went with two friends. The menu is extensive and covered eeveryone's tastes. We had a mix of fish and red meat and went with a white wine. We would recommend it to others. My second dinner there."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "Went for dinner on the recommendation of friends and although there were some very solid performers like the game meat appetizer and the porterhouse steak, some of the dishes were ill conceived like the Elk Diane. The Bison Short Ribs were outstanding and I thought the other dishes were solid. The service is good but the chairs are very low and uncomfortable for anyone taller than 5'6"."

  • "We went here for my fiancee's birthday and he had the Elk, which was amazing! I didn't love my lamb main course but the "foie gras mousse with duck confit, black truffle and stewed lingonberry" and "herbed sourdough baked with fontina and roasted garlic" appies were amazingly good and filled me up anyway. We loved the atmosphere!"

  • "The food was excellent - the noise level was very loud , but I guess that just means everyone was having fun that night."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "This was my first time at Open Range, I have been to Big Fish on the other side many times. These two restaurants are well worth it. The food is incredible, the wine list is outstanding, and the servers are very knowledgeable and helped us pick the perfect wine pairing. I had the duck breast, and my date had the lamb shank, both were juicy, succulent and full of flavor. We both look forward to returning soon to try more of this fabulous menu."

  • "Fantastic service, attentive but not rushed on a busy Friday night. Great food, some reasonable prices on the wine list, not pretentious in any way. Enjoyed our visit."
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "The food was amazing, there are no other words to describe it!"
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "We love Open Range. Only issue was that all of the waiter's suggestions were for very rich heavy food. He should have suggested a wider variety."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "This was at least my fourth time at Open Range so I knew what to expect: Great locally sourced food and good non fussy service. Wow, a restaurant that seems to be able to keep the same staff for several years, that says something right there. Ill be coming back asap. "

  • "The restaurant was busy because it was Saturday night. It felt like a long time to wait for everything from our drinks, to our appetizer, to our meal, then our dessert. Just be patient...it's totally worth it!"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Our first time at Open Range, we will be back many times, as the food was outstanding, our biggest surprise was how reasonable prices were compare to other Calgary food establishment."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "This was our second visit to open range! The food here is excellent! I have tried the duck breast and most recently the wild boar with apricot glaze i will definitely be coming back! My boyfriend enjoyed the elk Dianne both times- if you are looking for a satisfying meal good price point to enjoy good you wouldn't normally cook yourself, open range is the place you want to be! And for appetizer definitely try the escargot!! I don't even like snails and i would come back for more! Compliments to the entire kitchen and staff!!"
